Oh my.

But it couldn't happen to two more-deserving people, three if one includes the absent Grandma Judy.

When Yard sales Turn Ugly

Many of us in this forum buy from yard sales and resell the products online.

Other people have regular yard sales to sell their things. This has been a tradition ever since I can remember. I knew two families like this growing up. Today, they don't want to be bothered with the online process. They even think of online re-sellers as their competition.

I met a family like that today.

Their Craigslist ad announced, among other things, 400+ DVDs, CDs and video games. That's gold for me. The start time was 8AM this morning, according to their ad.

But when I hit their subdivision I noticed the signs had deflated balloons hanging from them. What this usually means is the signs were put up the day before and chances are the yard sale actually began on Friday morning. Now, just as some of us have our little tricks to get the best deals and hit the most profitable sales early, people who have yard sales on a routine basis have their tricks to lure the most people in. Knowing no one likes to hit a sale on the second day because all the good things are gone, these people delete their original craigslist ads and put up new ones that remove references to Friday start and end times.

They let me in a few minutes early and to my surprise most of the DVDs, CDs and video games were still there. Then I found out why. They were charging NEW retail prices (sometimes higher) for used products.

I scanned them anyway - hoping to find a rare gem that I could sell for more than the asking price. When that proved pointless, I asked if the prices were negotiable.

"Nope!"

I asked him if they knew their used prices were in most cases higher than online prices? (Maybe they didn't know )

"We price them this way to get people who don't speak English or aren't smart enough to shop online."

I just smiled, took my seven year old daughter by the hand, and said, "let's head out."

The guy then did his a really awkward baseball umpire impression and yelled, "and you're outta here!"

I ignored his theatrics and continued walking away.

"I can't believe you came here to try and jew me down!"

I stopped, turned around and said, "Did you really just say 'jew you down?'"

"It's just an expression!" He said.

"So is dumbass, but it applies to you perfectly" I called back as I got in the car.

It's interesting that I'd had a discussion the night before with my little girl about tolerance and stereotypes as we watched Al Sharpton's coverage on the March on Washington. So I was glad I could show here a real world example of how to stand up to jerks like that.

1. Wow - my day sucked, too, but not as badly as yours.

Suddenly it seems everyone is asking too much for everything and being totally inflexible. At least I didn't run into anyone making bigoted slurs. One idiot I encountered told me he'd just as soon burn the leather jacket I was offering $50 for than sell it to me for that price. Today I hit the second day of a professionally-run estate sale. The place was nearly picked clean except for a bunch of gorgeous wine goblets. I offered $10 apiece for the lot, a total of $420. They countered with $15. Big difference between $400 and $600, so I walked. Very frustrating weekend.

Oh boo-hoo.  The vindictive primitive's the one who always tries to buy Wedgewood at Dollar General prices, and then tries to sell Dollar General goods at Wedgewood prices.

Suuuuuuure he did.

Someone trying to get you to buy would never say something stupid like that.

Of course the DUmmies will believe it though.

Jew someone down......well I've heard the term all my life. I guess now we'll have to go all PC and shit and say "Try to get the government to take it from you and give it to me for free".

Apparently it's one of those things written down in invisible ink that only primitives can see.

Remember their greed isn't nearly as bad as those nasty corporations.

These are the types who show up at our local cooperative ministry and argue about the price of a $1 shirt or $1.50 pair of shoes.  They become loud and obnoxious hoping we'll take their "offer" of a dime or quarter.  We don't negotiate and tell them so.

Yard sales are fun, most don't make a lot of money they just need to get rid of stuff they no longer use.    Moving out sales to lesson the load to be moved are a gold mine if one is into crafting.

Flee markets and yard sales are the hagglers Paradise.  There is an art to the haggle, been so since town markets arose all over the world.    One can haggle with a consignment store, ---Put in a bid for $20.00 for less then the seller has priced it, store calls the seller to see if they will accept the offer.   These stores want and need the space and will often talk the seller into accepting a lower price so more merchandise can be moved in.

Example, a old cedar chest in brand new condition, even had the factory warrant and certificate        from 1958 on a gas test. Big old chest 4 1/2 feet long, 2 1/2 feet wide ---red velvet interior and a swing shelf.  Beautiful piece of furniture, outside all different inlays of wood.   Furniture Consignment store, had been there priced at $250.00 for a month.    I jokingly put in a bid for $80.00, sales clerk called the owner and I ended up paying $95.00.   Later on way home we stopped at Broyhill to price new cedar chests.  The cheapest one they had half the size of mine was $150.00.  My new chest was 50 years old and never used.

These deals come along just once or twice in a life time,  usually by accident , it is the hunt, the capture the haggling and a touchdown score that for us poor folk that makes all this fun.

From the tolerant Rev. AL:

Yeah.

I can't count the number of times in this particular forum, and other forums, where a re-selling primitive gloats about nabbing a "find" for a dollar, and then selling it to someone else for a hundred dollars or something.

If the greedy corporations operated under such a profit margin, there'd be Hell to pay from the primitives.

From the tolerant Rev. AL:

I find nothing wrong with Rev. AL's quote, he is correct in his history lesson.    Question is , why did his people come to a skidding stop, if they had kept going perhaps they would have been on the moon 1,000 years ago.

Was it internal warfare from that part of the world, was it religion?     All the masterpieces of history seemed to stop in a short time in human history.

Can't blame it on the whites, remember we were still living in caves.     So Rev. AL, did your people do this to themselves, wipe out the masters of stone building, the arts and sciences, or did we people of white skin somehow craw out of cave's and mud huts to travel thousands of miles to some how bring down the great civilisation's  that took your people 2,000 years to build   ?????

Cannot blame the Spanish for Central America, the great pyramids and the city's of thousands were a thousand years old before the Europeans found them and vacant , no one at home when they were found.   Cannot blame the Irish for destroying that culture.

Wrong again Sharptongue.  The oldest pyramids known (so far) are in Brazil.

To DUmmies, either you're white or black. There are no shades of gray. They refer blacks as brown people. They refer to illegal aliens as brown people. They even refer to muslim terrorist as brown people.

We be white peoples in a brown peoples world.

“White folks was in the caves while we [blacks] was building empires … We built pyramids before Donald Trump ever knew what architecture was … we taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it."

The Egyptians have never appreciated African Americans (mostly from the West African coast) taking credit for Egyptian inventions.  Even scholars are now backing off of this crackpot theory:

Quote
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Egyptian_race_controversy

...The controversy was reignited in 1987 when Martin Bernal produced the work "Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization." In his work, Bernal claimed that the Egyptian civilization was fundamentally African and that the most powerful pharaohs could "usefully" be called black.[178] The claims made in Black Athena were heavily questioned by Mary Lefkowitz in her book "Not Out of Africa: How Afrocentrism Became an Excuse to Teach Myth As History."

The findings from the UNESCO conference debated the points of agreement and disagreement concerning the Black hypothesis and other theories, and concluded that the ancient Egyptians were not black.[179] The current position of modern scholarship is that the Egyptian civilization was an indigenous Nile Valley development (see population history of Egypt)

Before they taught philosophy, they should have studied grammar.
