First night shift at the convenient store tonight.

Have no clue if I an working the whole 11 hour shift or if they just want me there for 8 hours yet.

1. I worked the night shift at a motel front desk years ago, and...

the oddest thing was the feeling I got as my shift was ending and people were waking up and starting their days as I was ready to crash.

You know, I do the bookkeeping for a truck stop that's located on the prairie out in the middle of nowhere; nothing for about 60 miles all around.

About ten times a year, because a clerk wants a night off and there's no available replacement, I volunteer to work 11-7.  This is usually on holiday eves, when others want to be with their families, and since I got no family, no problem for me.

However, I'm pretty expensive, costing the place almost three times the average hourly wage, because I insist upon being paid my accounting wages even if I'm just cashiering.  Also, the deal includes me not having to wear one of those stupid shirts such clerks are coerced to wear; I wear regular clothes, no name-tag even.

When I do this, I work alone, in charge of a very large building and several acres of ground surrounding.

Sixteen self-service gasoline and diesel pumps out there.

It gets very dark at night, out here in the eastern foothills of the Sandhills of Nebraska.

The daytime crowds at the truck stop are the Country Club set, compared with the trailer-court crowd that comes in at night.  Night shift is a freak show all by itself.

In case one's forgotten, I'm deaf; can't hear a word.

If franksolich can do it, the primitive can do it, although I wouldn't trust her with the cash register.

Her night shift should yield some good bouncy tales.

She may meet the new love of her life.

Well, she is guaranteed to see some real freaks, who come out only at night.

Well, she is guaranteed to see some real freaks, who come out only at night.

Hollidays when I don't want to cook we all go down to the truck stop for their buffet.    What a spread they put on for $14.00  Turkey , ham. a round house huge piece of beef. chicken cooked every way from fried to stewed,  Side dishes you name it, potatoes cooked every way one can think of, has to be
60 different side dishes.

I enjoy eating at the truck stop, not just for the food but the people that come in there are fun to watch.

Second shift when we got out a 2 AM and stopped for breakfast was my most fun.    In came the closers of the bars and night clubs. Most truckers were asleep in their cabs so this was just local lunatics.  The hookers, the Gay cross dressers,, the really strange and unusual of our community.

We all ways double tipped the waitresses as most were our mothers age, poor old woman that were of an age this was the only work they could find.

To sit at the bar and listen to the truckers telling others what to avoid, problems with hijackers  etc was a lesson in geography, and the job they chose to do.

The freakiest experience I had was about eight years ago.

It was the eve of Labor Day, and again, I was working alone.  Some employee with children wanted the weekend off, so there I was, this particular night.  Not only is this place way out in the middle of nowhere, but also at night it gets densely foggy.

There weren't any customers around, and so I was in the office, keeping my eye on the counter out on the main floor.

And incidentally, no, I don't hear the "beep" or "blip" or whatever that signals someone's coming in the door.

At some point, I glanced that direction, seeing a head of hair on the other side of the counter, and two sets of fingers clutching the counter's edge.  Obviously someone was yelling at me, but I didn't hear.

I got up and went over, thinking it was a small child, and wondering why the Hell a small child would be out here in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.

When I got to the counter, I leaned over to look at the other side.  It was an adult, female, grossly fat, and a dwarf, who was kind of ticked off that I'd been ignoring her.

Before answering, I surveyed the rest of the floor (the retail area's about 100'x150'), and much to my aghast astonishment, saw a whole lot of dwarves, romping, playing, running, skipping, laughing, joking, tumbling, chortling, giggling.

There were eight of them, total.

Given the setting and the time (the middle of the night, dark, foggy, no one else around), this had an eerie Alfred Hitchcock or Twilight Zone ambiance; my hair stood up on end.   I couldn't believe what I was seeing.  It was just, well.....weird.

As it turned out, they were dwarves from Minneapolis, coming to this area to participate in some sort of "clown festival" that takes place every year.

But for about ten seconds, my hair was standing up on end, it was so strange.

I am off today. But last night was real rough!

We had drunks come in wanting more to drink. Had to tell them no because it is against the law to sell to people that are drunk. Had something like 5 kids try to buy underage. And I learned all kind of stuff to try to do while also serving people. Mainly I am going to do the work of 2 when I am alone to run the store next week.

This is not going to be pretty. The store is next to a rough trailer park. And I will be alone on the first of the month, the busiest time for the store.

VIBS PLEASE????

Let's hope she doesn't have eight dwarves show up in the wee hours like the Coach did.

Vibs?

I had a neighbor that worked third-shift at a convenience store.  The most difficult thing he had to do was defrost and heat up a new batch of frozen chili.

Make sure you keep the shelves stocked with skittles and ice tea to keep the natives happy.

8. YES I CAN!

I just need at least 3 paychecks to pay off and have something for Tucson!
Three paychecks?  How long is that?  Six weeks?  Two months?
