Garbage disposal weird sound question.
My gd sounds like it's out of sync. There is nothing stuck in it, but it really vibrates & makes a lot of noise, even when there is nothing but water. It did this a few weeks ago & then went back to normal, but now it's back. It sounds like it is out of sync, if that makes any sense.
PS - I have always hated gd's. Then I read King's "Firestarter" & I hate them even more. I really need a compost bin.

1. Bad bearings/bushings.
Unfortunately, appliances aren't made to make it easy or practical to replace these thing.

4. Thank you.
Can I use it till it quits or is it better to just replace it since I will need to eventually anyway?

5. You can use it until you can no longer take the smell or the noise. BUT:
Be sure you have a good circuit breaker, or if you have glass fuses that you don't have more than a 15 amp fuse there.
I mean to say that the only danger is an electrical overload and fire incident.
Kind of makes replacing the unit sound like a good deal, no?
If it was me, I'd take out the old unit and bring it with me to make sure I'm getting a new one with the same features and rough dimensions.
In advance of doing that, you might find the hardest thing to do is to remove the existing unit- Here are two useful YouTubes:
after which a couple of youtube thingamajigs
Have fun!

6. ~lol. I have a plumber for that kind of work!
But yes, I will look at getting it replaced, soon. I know this is probably a simple task for those with the tools, but to me it looks like 4 hours of aggravation, frustration & a reason to drink heavily afterwards.
.....and finally, last but not least.....Ugly, she with the face like Hindenberg's!!!:

3. I don't like them either
and these 68 year old drains probably wouldn't handle one very well, so I've avoided having one.
However, if the cheap and obvious part of having all the screws tight is not the problem, you're probably looking at a bad bearing.
The choice is a high labor charge for rebuilding it or a lower labor charge for a new unit--or just dispensing with it.

Stick you face in and look.

Make sure that the power to the unit is on. That way, you'll get a really good look at the problem.
-
Stick your hand down the drain hole and check that the teeth of the disposer are working right by then turning it on. It's the only way to be sure of proper function.
-
I would think we need some sort of federal program to inspect garbage disposals. Maybe even a new cabinet position.
-
Libs should be nervous about the next generation of smart disposals.

If this can be done to a "smart" toilet, . . .

Think of the fun a hacker could have with a "smart garbage disposal." :evillaugh:

I'll bet the DUmmy has never taken it in for a tuneup.
