Out Of Work 2.5 Years, UI Benefits Just Expired, BUT - Big Job Interview Tomorrow
I've actually been out of work since January of 2011. My 4th and final Fed unemployment benefit extension just ran out last week (after the weekly benefit being cut from $450 to $368 a few months ago thanks to the sequester).
I've been interviewing with some consistency over that period, but at age 58, I'm afraid that ageism is the major hurdle that has kept me from being hired.
However, the ageism issue was handled during the phone interviews for this latest prospective position. Tomorrow, I meet for a face-to-face interview. I have a very good feeling about this one.
Looking for support anywhere I can get it. So, how about it, DU buds?

How much you wanna bet this DUmmy spent 2 and a half years sitting on his ass and not even looking for a job? Yes I do realize jobs in the 0bama world are hard to come by, but if a person has any self respect at all they will take a burger flipping job before sitting at home waiting for UI to expire. I moved to Tallahassee in 2009 and jobs were as scarce as a hen's tooth but within 30 days I was working. It was a low paying job and I had to work my ass off, but in just over a year it lead to a better job that I got because one of the supervisors I worked with knew the supervisor at another property where they paid better and because of his recommendation I got the better job. DUmmies on the other hand will sit on their asses and demand that you pay them CEO wages.

3. Thanks!
You know, the worst part about being unemployed for so long is that you KNOW that your talent and experience are going to waste sitting on the sidelines.
I've tried to compensate for that by doing volunteer work. I mean, a LOT of volunteer work. But there's something to be said about earning a paycheck.
Yeah I ran into that problem by being a stay at home dad for 3 years and found it hard to get a job, but I didn't sit at the computer and whine that someone owed me a job. I worked every temp job I could get until it lead to a permanent gig.
I'm not buying that a DUmmy would do volunteer work, since they won't bother to work if there is a paycheck involved.

22. Good luck, man.
Been outta work for 5 whole years myself, and I don't see much of a future outside of maybe a couple years of college.....but that'd be about it. Hope you'll have better luck.
Wow half a decade with no job, yet the DUmmy still eats, still has internet, and a place to live.
I thought 0bama fixed the economy so why is it the DUmmies aren't all CEOs?

9. Thanks for the good thoughts.
Now, I'm off to deal with one of those volunteer deals I mentioned above.

34. Thanks to everyone for the positive thoughts!
Woah! A whole 2 hours from the time he typed he's off to the volunteer job until he's back and firmly planted in front of Skin's island banging away angrily at the keyboard once again.
Of course, he'll claim he was posting during a break at the volunteer place. Liar.

Good grief, how the heck old am I and how did this all come about ???
Unemployment was hard to get last time I applied for it. What 1967 or so.
Then it came about 15 years ago our plant shut down for 2 weeks in the summer for repairs etc and the company came about with forms for us to bring to unemployment for the two weeks.
That was strange but what the heck I showed up with a couple dozen fellow workers and the place had a good 30 workers interviewing each of us separately. We only got one week unemployment but was told if our lay off exceeded a month we had to each week bring in a list of places we had applied to. First week unpaid but next 3 paid then one had to apply for work, prove it and work for any wage offered.
Gets even odder to me when Hubby was laid off indefinitely he went to a temp agency that put him to work immediately. Pay was $5.00ph less but it was work. After 6 weeks he was called back to work with all his lost benefits restored his seniority intact, at the same pay as when he left.
It really surprises me these new laws that make it able to sit around for 2 years before looking for work.
This man complaining about being hard to find work at 58 years old, had he taken any kind of job at 55 years old at least had the dignity of being employed.
Another weird thing, the laws must have changed as I listened in to a conversation with two men, one had been laid off and was telling his friend that he making $27.00ph. did not have to accept a job that paid less.
What kind of thinking is this, to sit around for 2 years bringing in 1/4 what they had been making from unemployment and not be willing to work for half of that.

So everything we've warned about UI incentivizing unemployment is validated.
And Dear Leader has paid his minions other people's money to leave him with a historically miserable economics report card.

Oh, I'm sure he was seriously looking for a job...starting sometime within the last six months. Before that, he probably applied for one every month or so, but only if it paid at least as much as the old one, had benefits at least as good, and did not involve stretching into unfamiliar territory (Either geographical or professional).

If there was any hint that I might be moved out of my current job, I'd be banging the phones HARD, sending out resumes to every company/recruiter I knew and a bunch I don't.
(BTW, DUmmies, just because you're secure and happy in your job--and none of you fit either category, but listen anyway--you should ALWAYS be networking.)
That way, when the axe came down, it's that much sooner I'd be able to transition to a new position and make any moves necessary to hit the ground running.

A report on the radio yesterday said in Massachusetts a single person on welfare makes the equivalent of $50,300 gross compared to a full time working position. This is unless a person has more than one EBT card and is not "scamming" the system in which the 50K number increases dramatically.

Work vs. welfare. A DUmmie will choose the welfare every time.

Probably is going to work for a fast food place so he can go on strike in nine days. :thatsright:
-
The poster child for "fun-employment" comes to roost.

Sadly, it's getting to the point where those who work are the chumps.

Isn't that what the Soprano crew used to call the working class ?

I guess the primitive will now ramp up his/hers/its effort to climb aboard the disability gravy train now that unemployment has run out, and these lazy bastards wonder why we call them lazy bastards.
-
There was a study conducted a few years ago that showed people found jobs right after the unemployment benefits ran out.

Question -
Do part-time jobs qualify for FunEnjoyment bennies if one is laid-off from one ?
I was curious if those who supported Obamacare are in for an even bigger screwing than they are getting now, since the 29.5 hour job is quickly becoming the norm in Obamaland ?
