Title: Places to live?
Post by: b-ONE-b on August 18, 2013, 04:00:02 PM
Being self employed I have the freedom to move around a bit and now that my wife and I have our son out of the house... I'm thinking about a move again.

I've lived in some great places over the years and some of those have turned "not so great" over the years too.

I'm looking for somewhere conservative but... don't know how to say this...

I will give examples. Some of my favorite spots:

1) NVA suburbs like Stafford, VA

2) Brentwood TN

3) Scottsdale, AZ

4) Plano, TX

They're all higher income sort of cities but very conservative. I might tend to feel "uncomfortable" in a conservative city in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming.

Ok, I'll just say it. I'm concerned about the "white trash" factor in some rural conservative areas.

So any ideas for super conservative areas... where people are mostly prosperous, polite, moral decent people? Must haves are ample gun rights, property rights and small State governments.

I don't mean to offend, but you sound a bit snobbish errr, 'Class conscious' for my neck of the woods; the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks would definitely not be to your taste.

Uh, what's your definition of "trash"?

<<<lives in the reddest part of Nebraska, a significant rural area, with the per capita income substantially lower than most places.....but the only trash we got around here is what one puts in the dumpster.

As far as trashy people, we have the same problems every large city has.  I understand your desire to avoid illiterate thugs, meth heads, and Obama voters.  You can't really go wrong with Williamson County if you can afford it.

You are correct in not considering Wyoming.  Even for the very wealthy, their barns are bigger than their houses, and not in pristine shape.  And they drive old, old vehicles.  Ratty old things.

Also, the cities there can hardly be called that.  60,000 tops?  Pretty soon you know everyone and "familiarity breeds contempt."

Agreed - wouldn't much fit in northern MN either.

Stay west of Coit Rd. and it's not too bad. Or just bite the bullet and go a few miles north to Frisco.

I'd never suggest NJ for many obvious reasons but the part in which I live is very red and not trashy. Lots of farms too and the shore is 35-40 min. away.

BS for trashing ID/MT/WY, as I spent a great deal of my childhood there.  Trust me, you're going to find "white trash" in Beverly Hills, too.

And most of the time, the "trashier" places I've seen tend to be more liberal-leaning types (gimme mah free shit!) like Maine, etc.

Plus the fact that in Wyoming, distances are measured not in miles but beers.  I mean, how gauche!

"So, how far is it from Rock Springs to Green River?"

"Eh, only about two."

"What about Cheyenne to Jackson Hole?"

"Oh, that's at least a case and a half."

After connecting with an old friend recently, Mrs E came home and flat-out told me we're going to retire in Louisville, KY.

 :wtf3:

It appears that her sole criterion in moving there is because of her friend. The friend and her husband evidently plan on retiring there in a few years.

 :whatever:

I don't know jack shit about Louisville other than that's where Cassius Clay was born. And the Derby, of course.

We ain't done talking about it.  :nunchuck:

I keep telling you where to retire.... and you keep moaning and groaning about Dollywood!!! It's 45 minutes away!!

No state income tax, cheaper to live than where you are, it's pretty here, I'm here!!

You might get 1 snow a year that requires shoveling the driveway, even then, chances are it will melt before you have to get out, since everything in town will shut down if there is more than an inch on the ground.

Nice area, I've played the Jack Nicholas course there. My in-laws live in Milledgeville so my main objection to the area is it's really, really, really hot during the summer. Otherwise, you're still out but close enough to Atlanta if you need to shop or fly somewhere.

I have a lifelong friend who lives there, in an older community in the area that I believe used to be a military base at the time of the 1918 influenza epidemic (Think it was closed down and developed before WW2).  It's just inside the ring road that runs past Churchill Downs.  You could do a lot worse than that area of Kentucky, Fort  Knox is fairly close if you need to take advantage of any retiree benefits there, and then there's the Knob Creek shoots every spring and fall to go and enjoy, and you can live within driving distance of the city but still be in rural land south of the beltway.  However, the traffic in the Louisville metro area is very heavy on the radial roads in and out, and Kentucky has a fairly stiff income tax by midwestern standards.  There are, of course, a lot of parts of town you want to stay the Hell out of.

I'm going to lay low on this one and hope she forgets about it. States sales tax is 6%; Georgia's is 4%. Homestead law, etc. Gotta do more research on the income tax angle. In most states, military retirement isn't taxed, or is taxed only beyond a certain level.

I don't have a huge issue about Kentucky, except that I'm in absolutely no ****ing mood to live someplace where I have to shovel ****ing snow. Ain't gonna happen.

No, I did not. I had said that Tennessee was pretty much out of the running because of the very high sales tax rate. Something's got to make up for no income tax, so they target consumption. That's okay, but as we won't have a helluva lot of regular income to tax anyway, the lack of an income tax in TN isn't a big sell item.

Plus the Hall Tax of 6% on interest and dividends over $1250.

When it's time to buy our next house, however, I want YOU as our agent! So much to know about short sales, etc., I can't wrap my head around all that stuff.

When it's time, we can discuss your commission.....

I know the sales tax is bad, but after coming from VA and NC, the cost of housing and utilities was so much less, it doesn't seem so bad.

Georgia's sales tax is only 4%, but I note in Augusta they've upped it another 4% to 8% total. That's ridiculous. Still looking for that tax haven....Maybe Belize or Harlingen, TX -- nah, too close to f'n hurricanes. Still looking....

I knew you retired from the military, and , but I wasn't sure, if you were still employed, or retired. Not knowing your ages, as i am not good at guessing ages.  A friend of mine wanted me to move to KY, near Ft Knox. I just couldn't see moving away from my family just for one friend, especially as Deano was so ill. My parents, being 74 and 71, aren't spring chickens anymore(gosh, don't tell them I said that!!_). Don't get me wrong, I love her dearly, but still. At least if I had moved to TX, there's many of you around...

Still not sure, about Carl, where he wants to live after he retires, from the army in December...

I didn't do a very good job of defining "white trash"

Let me just rephrase that as "trash"

It has nothing to do with income although they sometimes run parallel.

To me, "trash" is drug addicted, thuggy, wanna-be gangsta, criminal minded, primitive minded cretin with low moral standing. Aka the Dem base.

I retired from the Army almost 19 years ago, but there's no way I could have permanently retired. (Retirement check is good, but it ain't THAT good.) So, I started a 2nd career after my Army career and I'm within a few years of finishing THAT one.

We have many Dem voters here (complete with the entitlement mindset) and in Montana in both the farming communities and with the reservations.  Also have gansta's on the rezes, and they don't just sit there.

May I suggest central Colorado.  Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs.  Those three towns on Hwy 82 may be more to your liking.  Close to I-70 if you need access to a major city, close to Aspen if you need some excessive cultural input, low on trash factor.
