How to deal with a control freak boss?
Need some suggestions about dealing with control freak boss? I explicitly told him that I have very limited ability this weekend, and I am not contracted to work weekends, nor is it in any HR corporate policy I can find. I don't get paid overtime or get any comp time. He sends aggressive, hostile emails - and is always making threats...he told me once, he knows how to make people disappear..whatever that means. I hate dealing with bully bosses, but I'm at the point, where I have just had enough...

1. He knows how to make people disappear?
Did he say this in an emai?

2. If you have evidence, i.e. emails, go to HR.
Go to HR each and every time he acts or talks out of line, even if it's just your word against his. You might be in their office every day, but it's their job to listen to you and take action if you report that he's making threats, which is harassment.
How many others does your boss supervise?

14. Never ever trust HR, they are just a tool for management!

4. And DOCUMENT everything. Every word, every hostile look...
Everyone who was there.

5. HR, Monday morning, with printed copies of those.
Don't say anything until HR has read them. Document, document, document.
Is Aggro-boss's boss sympathetic? If so, make sure Aggro's boss is kept in the loop, and if needed, BCC your critical project data to Aggro's boss. Keep copies of your performance reviews at home.
Because that's just... Way out of line. Like edging past employee harassment out of line.

9. "I know how to make people disappear"
If you have that in Email, I would first take it to HR. When you meet with HR, tell them that they need to respond in a satisfactory manner or you will need to bring the matter to the local police.

10. That's a good point about involving the police...he wants to know where I am too on my days off..
I put my phone on DND on my days off..

17. your days off are really none of his business ... yes, I think HR and the police would
be the prudent thing to do at this point. "make people disappear" that definitely sounds threatening.

12. Agreed
This person has a problem and has made a threat to your personal safety. It is beyond time to ask for help.

13. You could simply get fired
That's how I dealt with mine. Problem solved.
B Calm (17,715 posts) Sun Aug 18, 2013, 06:39 AM
15. I agree, make him fire you and then take it to labor relations.
Orrex (37,574 posts) Sun Aug 18, 2013, 06:59 AM
16. I should disclaim...
My boss was indeed a controlling micromanager, but he never made veiled threats of the kind described in the OP. Clearly the current issue is of a different magnitude than my situation.
I agree with the suggestion above: document everything.
I think the whole thing's a lie.

How to deal with a boss who wants me to work for eight freakin hours?
At work, I can normally post on DU for about 6 hours. But my boss has noticed my low production level. Now he's threatening to cut off my access to the internet! I might even get fired!
Whats worse, my disability claims are not even ready yet.
What do? or rather, how to I turn this into a million dollar lawsuit?
This translation was brought to you as a public service by The Mannn Foundation and the Rodeo Clowns of America.

Wow sixteen posts and not one DUmmie suggested taking a dive and getting on the disability train! :o
Maybe we are in end times.

What was unsaid: DUmmy hipchick was having an affair with her supervisor, but she cut him off as part of the DUmp's sex boycott against eeeevil capitalists. She started sleeping with the guy from Shipping who wears the Anarchy t-shirt to work, and now the boss is jealous.
-
This thread is a bunch of unemployed DUmmies giving a contract employee instructions on how to get terminated.
-
he told me once, he knows how to make people disappear..whatever that means
I interpret that as a boss who knows how to fire people, even contract employees. DUmmies have too much 'drama queen' in their DNA.

Before I retired I ran a production line.
I had one girl training on a machine, she was learning it ok but was wasting a lot of time with the way she was working.
I came up to offer her tips on how to speed up, (After all we are production and numbers count) she informed me she hadn't found her comfort zone and until she did that was all the speed I was getting from her...
I helped her find her comfort zone....I do believe it was back on her couch in front of her TV watching her soap operas. That was her last day working for me.

The primitive wants all the other pathetic DUmmies on disability, funemployment, and stuck in 29 hour a week hamburger flipping Obama Mcjobs to know that she is so vital to her organization that her boss is bugging her to work overtime/weekends.

For sake of argument, let's assume this lie actually is happening. A huge stretch but.....
This would actually happen to me before leaving for myself. I would work when they asked. Soon I was getting raises and promotions. It's like a some kind of cheap Goebbels weekend writing camp and Joey is not smiling.
