On the eve of his military trial, accused Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan released seven pages of handwritten and typed documents to Fox News in which he appears to renounce his U.S. citizenship, abandons his military oath as a commissioned officer, and explains his relationship with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki -- the first American targeted for death by the CIA.
Most of the documents also include the acronym "SoA," which is considered shorthand for "Soldier of Allah." Hasan's business card, also bearing "SoA," was found in his Texas apartment after the shooting.
Hasan's attorney for civil matters, John Galligan, verified the authenticity of the documents and the signature, adding that the 42-year-old Army major, who is acting as his own attorney, directed him to provide the writings to Fox News.
"He represented to me that he either personally wrote in longhand or typed the statements at issue," Galligan said. "All of the documents were prepared by Major Nidal Hasan and were sent, at his specific request, to your network."
The documents may help illuminate Hasan's state of mind and could challenge the Defense Department's attempt to deal with the attack in the context of "workplace violence."

If there was any doubt whatsoever that Hasan is an enemy combatant that committed an act of terrorism rather than a common criminal committing "workplace violence," let that be removed NOW.
Hasan needs to hang not less than 20 minutes after the verdict and sentencing are announced. Do not pass Go. Do not let this ****stick inflict more pain on the victims and their families, nor mock our entire way of life.

The trial of the Fort Hood gunman, who is acting as his own attorney, took a surreal turn as the former Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 in the November 2009 attack grilled witnesses -- including his former boss in the military and a fellow Muslim who spoke to him the day of the shooting.
After a short opening statement in which ex-Army Maj. Nidal Hasan called himself a "mujahedeen," admitted to the rampage and said "the dead bodies will show that war is an ugly thing," Hasan cross-examined prosecution witnesses, including retired Lt. Col Ben Kirk Phillips, his former boss. When pressed by the defendant, Phillips acknowledged that his officer evaluation report had graded Hasan as "outstanding."
But he declined to cross-examine one of his shooting victims, Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford, who provided the day’s most damning testimony.

He gets to draw the paycheck until he's actually convicted. He has family members with access to his account withdraw his pay the day it hits the bank trying to prevent the Army from taking any of it back.
The original trial judge ordered Nidal to be clean shaven in accordance with the regulations stated in AR 670-1 and this nitwits defense lawyers not only successfully appealed the order, but got the judge removed from the case.

Just guessing here, but I'd think that the pucker factor being so high on this one (don't **** up, boys, this defendant is gonna DIE) that the powers-that-be just caved on the whole beard issue. The judge showed his ass a little too much for the PC-ites in insisting that Hasan shave his *******ed beard, so that's why he (the judge) was replaced with another judge (female, as it turns out) who "chose" to look the other way when it came to 670-1.
As the business with the beard isn't nearly as important as the prosecution not ****ing up, that's why - IMHO - they went down this road.

Lt. Col. Kris Poppe, Hasan's lead court-appointed standby attorney, said he is willing to step in and be Hasan's defense lawyer. But he asked that his responsibilities as co-counsel be minimized if Hasan, who is representing himself at trial, continues to work toward being executed.
It is "clear his goal is to remove impediments or obstacles to the death penalty and is working toward a death penalty," Poppe told the judge overseeing the case at the Texas military base.

They don't really require any excuses. They're going to murder and terrorize without them. I understand your point, but I don't think jihadists care one way or the other. They're going to do what they've always done, what they're trained to do, in numbers, as many times as possible, until or unless they are completely neutralized one way or the other.
