Despite consumer confidence at a six-year high, the latest AP survey of the real America shows a stunning four out of five U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, are near poverty, or rely on welfare for at least parts of their lives amid signs of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream. Hardship is particularly on the rise among whites, based on several measures. Pessimism among whites about their families' economic futures has climbed to the highest point since at least 1987. "Poverty is no longer an issue of 'them', it's an issue of 'us'," as 'the invisible poor' - lower income whites - are generally dispersed in suburbs (Appalachia, the industrial Midwest, and across America's heartland, from Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma up through the Great Plains) where more than 60% of the poor are white. More than 19 million whites fall below the poverty line of $23,021 for a family of four - accounting for more than 41% of the nation's destitute - nearly double the number of poor blacks and as one survey respondent noted "I think it's going to get worse." ...

Saw an article about that study posted by the AP earlier today, saved it for later. It'd be really disheartening if some of those allegations are genuinely true.

It's an AP poll. Not sure how much they are in the pocket for Dems.
But if we aren't there already, we will be. We lost a lot of our manufacturing and we are so over-regulated, taxed and sued, it's a wonder anyone will start up a new business or expand here.

I posted this study in my other forum. Hopefully the truth of it will cause the libs there some pain. Libs don't recognize the truth, but truth brings them pain, so when they're in pain it's usually because they're experiencing the truth.

AARP is in on the leftist plan to get more people dependent on the government.
Why Are We Encouraging Struggling Seniors to Enroll in SNAP?
More need food benefits to avoid going hungry
In 2011, AARP Foundation began a very successful pilot program in Georgia to help older people enroll in SNAP (the federal government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), and it is now expanding that program to four other states. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which funds SNAP, is running a series of ads urging more people to sign up for benefits. Yet more than 46 million Americans - a record number - are already receiving SNAP. Why are we encouraging more people to enroll?
We are engaged in this effort because many are still going hungry. Given the economic slump of the past four years, it's not surprising that so many Americans receive SNAP benefits today. As the economy declines, unemployment and poverty increase, and more people need help buying nutritious food.
From 2007 to 2010, the number of unemployed people increased by 110 percent, and SNAP had a 53 percent increase in participation. SNAP is designed so that the number of people getting help depends on economic conditions. The poor economy of the last few years caused enrollment to soar. And as the economy improves, the number of people getting SNAP will recede.

I can not think of an enterprise that I despise more than AARP. They make almost a billion dollars on overpriced insurance and could care less about the piddling amount from dues. Their Mutual Funds are bottom feeders with high fees.
They helped to write Obamacare which will do away with Medicare Advantage programs in every state except Florida. So, if you want a supplemental plan, you have to buy thru this rotten outfit.
Obama and the Democrats want dependency on the government. More welfare, more food stamps, etc. means more votes.

Most Americans can afford to miss more than a few meals. It's just a fact.

Why are our poor the fat and unhealthy ones?..........government feeds the non-working class.

Didja EVER see any of them NOT eating McDonalds or Burger King while they're driving? They're fat because fast food is their world.
-
We can blame LBJ and both parties for creating dependency. Millions are addicted to free handouts and have no desire to find a job or pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Being fat and lazy is the norm for many. Obummer has created an anti-business climate with Obamacare, new regulations and taxes.

I have never understood why both parties give out the free handout "entitlements".

I chalk it up to vote buying.

The government is so big, it's uncontrollable. We can't afford it either. Just a matter of time before everything implodes.
Our economy has gone in the toilet because of it. With high unemployment, and the only jobs being created are low paying, part time, this titanic is sinking faster every day.

At least the TITANIC had a band while it was going down.

Well that, or repayment for vote-buying, insider trading info, future consulting contracts, etc.

Also add crony political and ambassadorial appointments into the corrupt vote buying mix.

I'd be very hesitant to take that at face value, without knowing exactly what the parameters of "Welfare," "Struggled with," and "At some time in their lives" really are. I'm sure almost everybody's been between jobs at some point in his or her life, and that would seem to fit the vast and vague description here.

Very very few people I have met in my lifetime have come anywhere close to the common sense precepts that Dave Ramsey promotes. If more did that 80% number would be a much smaller number.

I agree. I've been on the brink of financial disaster three different times in my life, but managed to get through it to the other side without government aid.

Been there twice myself, never collected unemployment though. However the phrasing this so-called finding uses could put us both in the 80% for 'Struggling with joblessness' or being 'Near poverty' even though we both won through to the other side without losing our ways.

Agree. I was not raised to know these things, but was able to learn them.

Me, too. But, we didn't whine about it.

Me too, Jimmy Carter, divorce and heart attack......nose to the grindstone and muddle through it.....if you stop and ask the government for help, you've already lost the battle.
