Title: Indicted congressman (William Jefferson, D-LA) to run for re-election
Post by: Wretched Excess on June 17, 2008, 09:08:06 PM

it wouldn't surprise me at all if he won.  Louisiana politics is a world of it's own.

Quote
Indicted congressman to run for re-election

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Democratic Rep. William Jefferson, who faces bribery charges over $90,000 found in his freezer, said on Tuesday that he plans to seek re-election.

"I will run for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives this fall," Jefferson, who has pleaded not guilty, said in a statement.

His sister, brother and niece also face various charges.

Jefferson, a congressman since 1991 whose district includes New Orleans, was charged last year with racketeering, soliciting bribes for himself and his family, fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

He was accused of soliciting millions of dollars in bribes from nearly a dozen companies while using his office to broker business deals in Africa.

he has been indicted since his last reelection, but I don't recall his margin of victory in 2006.  if the DNC is smart, they'll find a decent candidate to run against him in the primary (or what passes for a primary in LA).  three of his relatives were  indicted  (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jxr9ArL8AbLqQV3bYPffWc-3MjRgD913F5G82) on fraud charges a couple of weeks ago.

on edit : he "won" the primary 30-22-18-13 and some also-rans, and romped in the run-off, 57-43

Oh, and yes, he will win again. If anyone wants to put some money up, I have about 10K I can spare.

We ARE talking about the same Damn morons that voted Ray Nagin back into office AFTER his BLATANT failure during Katrina, you know.  :whatever:

I heard from people that live in the area that republicans crossed over and voted for nagin because they wanted to screw mitch landrieu.  :-) well, they wanted to screw the entire landrieu family, but mitch was the only one screwable right then.

In a sane world he would not have been eligible to run for office.

They're democrats, what do you expect? Hell, Massachusetts keeps electing someone who was responsible for a girl's death. It's not uncommon. Hell, I'd say it was the norm. Didn't Barney Frank have a male brothel being ran out of his office?

Let any of that shit happen in the Republican party. They'll be gone. We had a guy, Ben Harbin, a state representative here, who got a DUI. I seriously doubt he'll be re-elected......but he seems to be working his ass off to make amends.

Those Democratic idiots have no morals. That shouldn't be a mystery.

I saw that.

I ran across both of their names and what they were charged with, and noticed that they were republicans, and weren't reelected.  I started to mention it, but it sorta made it sound like corruption was a political tradition in augusta.
