It sad, and imparts a feeling of hopelessness, to watch the news media speak of Helen Thomas.

They all mention her comments about the Palestinians, of course.

They talk about her record as a pioneer for women journalists, how 10 presidents deferred to her. All the usual, pro-forma stuff one would expect from someone reading a pre-prepared obit from the news room's ready-files.

I would rather they all took inspiration from her. Asking the hard questions. Never backing away from the truth. Being tenacious in followup.

Helen Thomas may well be the very last real journalist, real *reporter*, real *working* newsman, any of us will ever know.

Thank you for your service, Ms. Thomas. Our society is well and truly diminished with your passing.

You know, I just got done reading H.L. Mencken's Happy Days.

He spent a couple of summers as a boy--circa 1890--in Ellicott City, Maryland, these days one of the wealthiest and whitest enclaves in America, and he described it as a rather nice rustic place.  But I'll bet it's all been paved over since.

It's got, uh, racist language in it.

Oh, you must mean disagreement with lib policies. Yes, that's very racist.

He never once used the "n" word, but he used a whole lot of other colorful words describing the attributes of Germans, Italians, Irish, the Dutch, West Virginians, politicians, and other minorities, which wouldn't be cool today.

Cali's right, this is just fawning, obsequious hyperbole.  Except that, hey Stinky.  When people are dead as a doornail, they can't read your internet posts.

That's the deal.

One can say whatever one wishes about the dead, even if it's something really bad or mean, because the dead don't care what we think or say.

The point is to get the still-living primitives all uptight in their righteous indignation.

Nor laugh at them.

Ellicott City is a very wealthy town, with a remarkable scarcity of 0bamaites, which makes it surprising that Mike and Monica live in such a humdrum, relatively small (only 2100 sq. ft.), relatively cheap (only $501K) home.

But then again, Mike just designs restaurant menus, and Monica is an airhead. Not a lot of cashflow in the Sparkly family.

You forget, the sparkling old dude probably has to pay his first wife a big chunk of alimony.

And I hope it's a lot, the way he dumped her, threw her away just because she was getting old, and he wanted young meat.

He's also a wife-abandoner.  And think of all she did for him, his first wife.
