Las Vegas, state unemployment on the rise
Source: Las Vegas Sun

Nevada’s unemployment rate inched up to 9.6 percent in June, with Las Vegas and Carson City posting major increases in jobless numbers.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today there were an estimated 132,400 persons out of work statewide in June, an increase of 900 from May.

Department Economist William Anderson said Nevada’s rate “remains stubbornly high” compared with the nation’s 7.6 percent, but he added it was still 2 percent below June 2012.

There were an estimated 100,100 unemployed in the Las Vegas area, a 10.1 percent rate. That is the highest rate since the 10.2 percent rate in January. In May, there were 92,400 people unemployed, or 9.3 percent.

4. Las Vegas used to be a bargain

Cheap but high quality rooms, cheap food and airfare was cheaper to Vegas then elsewhere.

That all changed when they ran the last of the mob out of town and the likes of Adlesen, Wynn and a few others took over. All the casinos are owned by a few corporations. The food is expensive, the rooms are no bargain and airfare is no longer a good deal.

We used to go to Vegas every year at least once, if not to spend a few days, we would fly in there and drive to California. Now we have no incentive to do either.

You are correct about the excess capacity, but maybe if they offered the deals they had in the 80's and 90's they would fill the place up again. Instead they now rely on the big conventions that come about 3 times a year and they will hire temporary workers to accommodate them then lay them off when the convention is over.

Bring back the cheap hotel rooms and food and it could become popular again and that would drive the economy in Vegas again.

8. I'll take the mob over the finance capitalists any day.

Mobsters at least have a better sense of justice and morality.

Ok Dave, Card counters are usually thrown out, BUT back in the day, the mob would KILL, yes KILL loved ones of the counters to keep them from patron any casino.  And they do have connections all over the country where gambling was legal way back when.

Like today you didn't want to cross the Mob anymore then as now. It's not because the Mob ran Vegas that prices were cheaper it's because politicians and their lack of spending control plus other things have caused price increases. Guess which party of the two is the worse offender with their Union Help.

Maybe it was because I was young but the mob ran a Las Vegas I liked better than now.

Of course the criminal ring called the democrat party runs Vegas and IMHO it sucks compared to 25 years ago.

Gosh I seem to remember a President telling people not to visit Las Vegas while he continued to campaign there for the union votes. The freaking unions, despite the grim economy continue to squeeze more money out of the properties, the consumer picks up the tab.

When Obama made that major blunder, several corporations cancelled conventions in Las Vegas, leaving many rooms empty and several without jobs.

He's so inept it hurts to watch the pain he causes real Americans being hurt real bad by a real incompetent president.

While I can't speak for Obama himself, I DO know that Obama is the most "successful" president in my lifetime. If you look at everything Obama's done in the prism of political gan/loss and not truth/lie, he is near-perfect in his actions. Keep in mind every economic "failure" is a huge Democratic "success," as it encourages them to put more government regulations and constraints on people, which is the GOAL of Obama and the democrats.

Funny how people whine for the Vegas of 20 years ago--uh, DUmmies?  The mob influence was pretty much GONE by the late-70's/early-80's.

And for those DUmb****s who whine about the cost--where else are you going to stay in a 3-star room for $50/night during the week (I'm thinking TI, Golden Nugget, etc. or 4-star for barely $100) have an all-you-can-eat SEAFOOD buffet for $30 (granted, no $7.77 prime rib deal, but still damn good) and see shows that rival anywhere in the world?  Gambling is actually taking more of a backseat these days, and this is the result.

The main reason airfare isn't cheap is because FUEL isn't cheap, DUmmies.  What factors do you think contributed to that little factoid?

Then again, I see Vegas as a TRUE measure of the economy--people might be doing "okay" but they sure aren't doing well enough to hop on a plane and drop a grand or two on a long weekend.

I agree. Las Vegas is still one of the most affordable travel destinations in the United States. The Dummies are just upset that the hotels won't take EBT.

There is still a mob in Vegas, they now call themselves the Culinary Union.

There is a ton of stuff to see and do. I know several non gamblers that visit the city.

I've have never really fit into that non gambling group.  :-) But I do limit my casino time and end up being a tour guide most of the time.

A few years back duh hubby and I flew to Vegas round trip (from Baltimore) and stayed from Monday through Friday at a major hotel on the strip for a mere $700 for both of us. Plenty of free/inexpensive things to do around there and the Penn and Teller show was great.

Skydive, Free Fall wind tunnel, helicopter tours, Pawn Stars, Kounts Customs, Rick's Restorations, and a plethora of non chintzy museums.

All great ideas.

There are also some new tours that combine some of the above into a package deal.

The new Mob Museum is pretty popular also. I think Chris would enjoy this: http://www.autocollections.com/

Plenty--some of the better concerts I've ever been to were in Vegas (Seal, for one.)  Best steakhouses I've been to bar none.  Shows like Blueman Group, Cirque du Soleil, etc., which are incredible.

Then there are the conventions, etc., which are there.  Lake Mead.  Hoover Dam.  NASCAR.  NFR.  Awesome golf courses.  The list goes on.
