What happened to my gear shift?
It's a 5 speed old Saturn. Went into reverse okay, but when I tried to shift into 1st, the gear shift was flopping around all over the place. Couldn't get it out of reverse so had to back it into my neighbor's driveway.
Is this REALLY bad news?
Thanks! I'm in tears.

2. Either that or a screw came off the linkage.
Put it on a lift and I bet they will find something. Whatever you do don't just jack it up and crawl under the car to have a look. At a minimum put it up on jack stands. Your family will appreciate having you around a bit longer.

4. I guess it proves
I have screwed up more than most have.
Well now, franksolich is hardly impressed by the advice of the jimly primitive.
And franksolich is no expert on automotive mechanics.
It seems to me the advice given by the jimly primitive is similar to instructions about how to open a bottle of milk, "unscrew the cap on top."

Frank, you have every reason to not be impressed.
The problem is, after Gateless puts his car on those all important jackstands, crawls under the car, and finds out all that linkage can be accessed by removing the center console inside the car, (because it is bolted to the top of the transmission housing).
After all that. Gateless will still think, Jimly is a genius.
(sigh)
