Title: USSR
Post by: seahorse513 on July 12, 2013, 10:23:45 PM
There are 7 continents. which are: Asia, Antarctica,  Africa,  Australia, Europe, North America, South America.
Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Poland(These countries are considered part of Europe), I believe separated from the USSR, however, The Largesse of the USSR is in Asia...

Technically, the USSR doesn't exist. So it's in neither continent.

Since about 1991.

The Europe/Asia divide is mostly cultural.  Since Russia is ethnically and culturally mostly European, it is generally considered part of Europe.  Additionally, the vast majority of Russia's population lives in Western Russia, which helps to solidify them being European.

Russia was just one of about 14 'Socialist Republics" that made up the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" or USSR ("Soviet" is a Russian word which in context meant more or less something like 'Representative council').  Of course, like Serbia in Tito's Yugoslavia, it was the 'Equal among equals' that bossed all the other partners around at its whim, and for its own advantage.  Being born a Russian was also a leg up on any Party or government job (To the extent there was a difference between the two), from lowest to highest, to the everlasting irritation of Belarussians, Ukrainians, and all the other players.  It was additionally by far the largest of all the republics.

The traditional dividing line between Europe and Asia is the Urals, leading to references to 'European Russia' (Also known as 'Great Russia' for historical, cultural, and political reasons) vs. Siberia, the latter of which is basically Russia beyond the Urals.  While there are a lot of resources beyond the Urals, around 90% of the people, civilization, tech base, and culture are on the west side of the mountains.  The Great Russians don't think of themselves as Asians and never have, in fact that's kind of a slur to them because over there, that means you're saying they're Uzbeks, Khazaks, Azerbaijanis, etc., which are generally regarded by the Russians about the way we'd feel about Iranian hillbillies.

Apparently it is called the Russian Federation...(where the **** have I been?? :banghead:) not paying attention obviously. See I told you this group was good for me!! :-)
However, back to debate.....
According to this map, Eurasia, or the European Asia, and the Russian Federation are considered part of the Continent, Asia.
My next look up, is to see whether the countries of Eurasia, are part of the European union

The Beatles did there level best to make the Soviet Union seem cool and desirable.

"Back In The USSR" is a good rock-n-roll song, for sure.  And one of The Beatles shortest in play time.

I wonder how much of their 1968 fortunes came from record sales and concerts in the USSR?

OK, back to the thread at hand................................

Whether the Ussr was considered on the continent of Asia, which I felt it was, cause I was taught that in school, and Dutch thought it was part of Europe. He told me to look at a map, and I said, NO, you look at a friggin map... :argh:

Dutch could be forgiven for the belief that Russia is European; while the greater land mass is in Asia, the vast majority of the population -- and the capital -- is north of the Bosphorus and west of the Urals; in other words, geographically within continental Europe.

Even more so the USSR, which included Belarus and the Baltic states.

Good movie on the dissolution of the USSR, from the perspective of a breakaway nation (Estonia): The Singing Revolution.

Wait, why?? are you ****in kidding me?? Listen, I graduated in 1984, I think he may have graduated in 81, not sure how old he is, but older than me..

The USSR was formed in 1922 and ended in 1991

Obviously, he was ogling the girls in Geography class, instead of paying attention, then he would have known, that the USSR was in the continent of Asia!!

Most of the land is in Asia.

Most of that is snow and trees.

Actualy That song was written as a response the the Popularity of the Beach Boys song "California Girls" and is a parody in a way of that song. Paul and John were just poking fun at Beach Boys. So in the spirit of that here ya go.

No, Holy Resurrection, south of Tacoma.  It's an OCA church, but they do services in Slavonic at least once a month, so a fair number of Russians joined the parish.
