Perry was elected lieutenant governor in 1998 and became governor after George W. Bush vacated the seat upon his ascension as president of the United States. Perry handily won re-election bids in 2002, 2006 and 2010, and made a splash in last year’s Republican presidential primary before bowing out before the South Carolina primary.

Nope. I'd put money on David Dewhurst. It's a nice runner up prize to the Senate seat he lost to Cruz.
My money is on Greg Abbott. Davis didn't have a chance, the Castro's have been eyeing this prize, but with Perry out it hoses up any Dem frontrunner, IMHO.
Abbot is a possibility, and for me a more palatable one than Dewhurst after the crap he pulled in the Senate primary.
