Oh my.

First, the cousin waddles in with this crunchy news:

Quote
nadinbrzezinski (123,115 posts)  Sat Jul 6, 2013, 01:12 AM

And in other news ...6-0 in the US Guatemala friendly

Soccer game tonight. I miss most while recording the radio material. But lord, I hope Guatemala gets at least one, consolation. Nope, it's over 6-0...

DisgustipatedinCA (6,075 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 01:17 AM

1. I think a 6-0 means Guatemala can't alert on a thread for an hour

Isn't that how it works?

SidDithers (28,056 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 11:50 AM

6. Soccer scores in GD...

8. There is this--->

General Discussion (Forum): About This Forum

Statement of Purpose

Discuss politics, issues, and current events. No posts about Israel/Palestine, religion, guns, showbiz, or sports unless there is really big news. No conspiracy theories. No whining about DU.

9. If you think it's off topic, can't you do a 'host-y' lock as being such?

Quote
Bonobo (21,097 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 01:10 PM

10. If you've never alerted before, you should learn about that feature.

I warn you though, it can get addictive.

13. Is there a 12-step help group? Should I ask in GD?

Quote
SidDithers (28,056 posts)   Sat Jul 6, 2013, 01:27 PM

11. Threads are only locked by consensus...

and some Hosts apparently think that a soccer score from a meaningless friendly game is considered "really big news".

Discuss politics, issues, and current events. No posts about Israel/Palestine, religion, guns, showbiz, or sports unless there is really big news. No conspiracy theories. No whining about DU.

Edit: and you should know that many of the other Hosts will intentionally ignore or vote Leave on your alerts, regardless of their merit. Some feel you abuse the alert button, and so judge those alerts not on the post, but on the alerter.

Case in point:

Autumn (11,931 posts)
23. Do you think someone should tell him that most

of his alerts are ignored by some hosts just because he sends them? That response by Bonobo is priceless though

Quote
bike man (563 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 01:51 PM

12. So, now we know. The SOPs for the various forums are there just to take up space,

and when an entry is in fact off-topic, personalities come into play.

Announcing the birth of a grandchild, for instance, even though it has a spot just waiting for it in the lounge, and having nothing to do with politics, issues, or current events will be left in GD because of identity of the alerter - disregarding the 'off-topic-ness' of the post.

Quote
hrmjustin (11,376 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 02:50 PM

24. That is not true, the host work very hard on alerts sent.

Hosts have discretion on certain things. Hosts do not like to hide things unless they have to.

Quote
SidDithers (28,056 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 03:02 PM

25. I think I'd say that the SOP is selectively enforced,,,

There's an SOP for most of us that doesn't apply to some other posters.

Quote
hrmjustin (11,376 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 03:16 PM

26. Some people are also very selective with their alerts.

16. I thought sports posts weren't allowed unless it's really big news?

Quote
hrmjustin (11,377 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 02:37 PM

17. It isn't but the hosts make that choice and judging from what I read in the host forum it is very

close call. The hosts will work this out.

Quote
Cali_Democrat (15,626 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 02:38 PM

18. I don't understand...

how can it even be a close call when the post clearly violates SOP? This is sports and it's not really big news.

For the people voting to leave it, what are their justifications?

Quote
HappyMe (13,265 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 02:42 PM

19. Well.

Just think about it for a minute.

Quote
hrmjustin (11,377 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 02:44 PM

20. I am saying the voting on whether to leave or lock is close.

Most hosts don't like to hide things unless they have to.

Quote
muriel_volestrangler (66,248 posts)    Sat Jul 6, 2013, 05:03 PM

37. The vote had actually been to leave it, unless someone posted to it again

because after the first few minutes, no-one was posting to it (and that is a decision that has been made for years by mods and now hosts). However, that wasn't good enough for SidDithers, so he kicked it himself, after several hours, so that a lot more DUers would see it. And the other hosts are now somewhat pissed off that he couldn't have ignored it, like the rest of DU was.

It seems that Sid has a need to see Nadin's threads locked, rather than just to see them sink. Sadly, Sid will be a host of GD for another 69 days, so there's a lot more of this sturm und drang to come.

31. there seems to be a nadinexception

perhaps you have heard of the famous taterguy exception, a funny lounge/meta gag? - well the nadinexeption is not funny, just brought to you by three gd hosts who claim alerters are too selective about the poor dear, yet don't see their own bias in always defending and voting to leave any of her inane, off-topic or word-salad posts.

merit of alerts don't count, only the identity of the alerter, all while claiming the alerters are biased. it is a riot in the host forum when there is an alert on nadin.

32. She gets her fair share of locks.

Last week she got a lock on a weather post and there were plenty of other weather Threads that were left alone.

I predict nadin's iggy list is swelling, and that a plonking sound is echoing through the sewers of the DU

If it voted to plonk, it would be hard to laugh at her and the following comments.

Right now stuck on serious scanner and topo map duty.

So she's marking all the calls on a map?  It's probably hanging on the wall marked with pins just like on tv crime shows. :mental:

I hope not.  The police scanner risks getting shot, then where would we be?

Khakis of course.  :-)

Okay, I finally figured it out.

Remember that the cousin's big into fantasy games.

So she dons a uniform, slips in her sidearms, and has a map laid out flat on the dining-room table, using golf tees (upside down) to mark places where the scanner alleges there's fires.

And then she imagines she's calling the various fire stations, to assign them which fires to fight.

That's all it is, a little fantasy game, and solo too.

I'm wondering if anybody's ever heard her voice, and what it sounds like.

I can only imagine, but I imagine it's fast and nasal, like I imagine the Daffy the Duck cartoon character speaks,

Of course Crazy Miriam is a lunatic, but even lunatics like the DUmmies are appalled by nadin.

She posted a video a year or so back where she test drove a Jeep at the car show, and she did quite a bit of talking.  She has a low, deep voice with a strange sort of eastern European accent and she talks very slowly.
