According to the paper, hundreds of IRR members "refused to report or simply ignored their mailed mobilization orders."
Matthis' father Rob, a rocket scientist who lives in the army town of Huntsville, Alabama, said mobilizing IRR members was a form of back-door draft.
"If our country is in such a dire emergency that we need to conscript manpower, congress has to vote to reinstate the draft," the elder Chiroux told AFP.
"But they won't do that because if congress said we need to bring back the general draft, the war in Iraq would be resolved very quickly," he said.
"Moms and dads, who represent millions and millions of voters, would say: wait a minute -- you want to draft my kid? Iraq's got to stop."

That contract was for eight years...................... :bird: TRAITOR :bird:
A lesson on personal responsibility could be inserted here...............but **** it

Correct me if I'm wrong here but doesn't one have to volunteer to become a part of the Instant Ready Reserve ? Ya know , sign a freaking CONTRACT (that one assumes doesn't include the caveat "but only when you feel like it" attached to mobilization conditions....)
How is it therefore a "draft" ?
Not too bright for a "rocket scientist" this chap.

Ahh, your post confused me. You know when you enlist that whatever time you spend in the military, you still have an 8-year obligation. I.e., you sign up for 5, you have 3 left, 6, 2 left. I served about 8 years and a month when I ETS'd.

Ok, I understand how that works now. I thought that it was a system you could sign onto at the end of your 8 year contracted period.

Poor babies !!! When I retired from the Navy, I was still subject to another TEN years of IRR...... **** them asshole babies........ :loser:

"I signed a contract to serve, but I don't want to actually do that so I demand Congress enact the draft and make other people serve my obligations!!!" :whatever:

I'm some what, marginally, just a tad torn... :thatsright: Military members signed up on a voluntary basis, they're obligated to serve their contract. Yet the IRR call up was commonly perceived and explained by recruiters as something that would really only happen in a WW3 scenario or an outright war with Russia or China.... not a Vietnam ordeal... or Iraq like scenario. So no one expected something like this to ever actually happen.
These people served their original active duty with honor apparently. Now they're being asked to do something never imagined before... and to serve in combat zones for longer tours of duty than people during the Vietnam era... They're contractually obligated too... but... shrugs...
My recruiter explained it to me just as it is written. He then asked if I still wanted to sign.

I was told I was signing up for eight years. You do not get your Honorable Discharge certificate until that eight year time period is over.
58,000+ died in that ordeal.........................was that not important enough???

I don't know where you heard this, but my recruiter told me straight up what it meant. That after I ended my initial AD stint that I was subject to recall at any time for the full 8 years. I ended up serving the full 8 as AD with a 10 month break in service after my intial enlistment.
My AR son was told the same thing... I know as I was there when the recruiter told him that.

You get your honorable after you ETS. Doesn't matter if you signed up for 3, 5, or 6. However, I was told as well about an obligation to 8. EVERYONE was.
As for Vietnam, I take issue with that statement (Not you CH). That war was a war lost by Damn liberals. There was not a ****ing battle we lost. Not one. Even Tet. Tet pretty much destroyed the ****ing Viet Cong. It was their last ditch effort and they failed. We pulled out WAY too soon and the ****ing liberals, and their Damn compatriots the ****ing NVA, won. We lost 58K men and women for no other purpose but the Damn liberals' affinity to Communism. :censored:

Well my DD214 said Honorable, but I didn't recieve my Honorable Discharge certificate until eight years was over................it was also dated for that eight year point. maybe things have changed since I got out.

Some people I swear only hear what they want to and the others only believe they heard something that wasn't said. IF he had questions about his contract he should have asked when he joined up and when he ETS'es out as to his status. Theis whole thing about "The Recruiter Lied" is getting to be so over done that the old beaten horse has said "ENOUGH'.
