If Only Our Glorious Leaders Put as Much Effort into Making People’s Lives Better

as they did into tracking us and covering their own asses….

If the number of people, the amount of money, and the all the work that was put into the NSA spying programs had instead been funneled into single-payer healthcare, or alternative energy programs, our country would be in far, far better shape than it is now.

If all the effort that has been used to catch, demonize and punish whistleblowers - from Manning and Kiriakou to Assange and Snowden – had been put toward a campaign to bring back good paying jobs and quality education….

Really, what kind of country do we want to be?

4. The surveillance state budget is said to be $1 trillion a year.

The national security state has an annual budget of around $1 trillion. Of that huge pile of money, large amounts go to private companies the federal government awards contracts to. Some, like Lockheed Martin or Boeing, are household names, but many of the contractors fly just under the public's radar. What follows are three companies you should know about (because some of them can learn a lot about you with their spy technologies).

L3 is everywhere. Those night-vision goggles the JSOC team in Zero Dark Thirty uses? That's L3. The new machines that are replacing the naked scanners at the airport? That's L3. Torture at Abu Ghraib? A former subsidiary of L3 was recently ordered to pay $5.28 million to 71 Iraqis who had been held in the awful prison.

Oh, and drones? L3 is on it. Reprieve, a UK-based human rights organization, earlier this month wrote on its Web site:

“L-3 Communications is one of the main subcontractors involved with production of the US’s lethal Predator since the inception of the programme. Predators are used by the CIA to kill ‘suspected militants’ and terrorise entire populations in Pakistan and Yemen. Drone strikes have escalated under the Obama administration and 2013 has already seen six strikes in the two countries.”

8. I share your passion. All of that money could be going into all of the schools which they're closing

etc. etc. etc. This is "austerity", meaning the rich get richer off of the poor (it's our tax dollars funding the surveillance state budget) while they tell us there's no money for =our= needs, where tax dollars used to go. Quite a scam; just look at Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy...

:ownit:

There are a lot of racists at DU lately, all complaining about 0bama.

Some people never learn. They voted for this kind of leadership twice. Now they (and the rest of us) get to see it unchallenged and unrestrained for the next three years.

Then we get Hillary after this clown leaves office. That's the funny thing about life, no situation is so bad that it can't get worse.

Oh without a doubt. There are far too many socialists and they're almost all in perfect lockstep and far too many "conservatives willing to stay home instead of voting.

That's  not the governments' function.

That's your function.  The Governments' function is to ensure that the best opportunity to do so exists and stays the hell out of the way.

Yes.  Foreign concept to you, no doubt.

Yup -

So, why don't we add on to the pile ?

So it turns out that even as President Obama dismissed Edward Snowden the other day as "a 29 year old hacker " the NSA hired hired him to do just that. Surprised? I'm not. The minute I saw the "offensive cyberwar" documents in the Guardian I figured as much.

Anyway, this information is revealed in this comprehensive synthesis of the case by Scott Shane and David Sanger in today's New York Times:
[H]is last job before leaking classified documents about N.S.A. surveillance, he told the news organization The Guardian, was actually “infrastructure analyst.”

It is a title that officials have carefully avoided mentioning, perhaps for fear of inviting questions about the agency’s aggressive tactics: an infrastructure analyst at the N.S.A., like a burglar casing an apartment building, looks for new ways to break into Internet and telephone traffic around the world.

Obama=incompetent

The only reason that the first term of this economic illiterate community organizer was not more of a disaster is inertia. That momentum is all gone now and we are going to see the true inexperience of 0bama and his merry band of misfits hail in decades of misery for America.

All of the disasters we are going to face will never be 0's fault. Not until something goes right will 0 take credit. So nothing is ever going to be his fault.
