Simkins performed some sort of treatment to kill the wasps, but WFLA says the method is a trade secret.

Yellow jackets are the meanest damn insects I've ever seen. They latch on to you and don't turn loose. I've seen them latch on to the exhaust pipe of a bulldozer and sting it until they're fried.

The most I've been stung by them in one incident is 28 times on the head. Got plenty of funny stories about yellow jackets....they just weren't funny at the time. :-)

Then there's the Japanese Giant Hornet:

If you want nightmares, google the thing and watch videos. Scary as hell.

Yellowjackets are the insects that people mistakenly call bees when they buzz around your food outdoors. Bees go for the nectar in flowers; yellowjackets are carnivorous and will eat almost anything.

You really, really don't want to run over one of their nests when driving your tractor or lawn mower.

I jumped into a haystack at a farm when I was 4 (the farmer had given his permission).  Hidden in the haystack was a hornets nest -- no idea how many times I was stung but I found out the hard way that I'm not allergic!

Way back when I delivered mail (a thousand years ago) I would run across a bee/hornet/wasp what ever, that measured 2 1/2 inches long and very thin and dig large holes in the ground.

The only thing I found close is this, Cicada Killer Wasp;

I put the blade of my Boy Scout hatchet into a nest of 'em once.  Got stung 8-10 times.  Our Siberian Husky dug into another one, a few years earlier.  Damn near killed him.

ETA:  To address the OP--"Thousands of queens," eh?  Was the nest named "San Francisco?" O-) :whistling: :tongue:
