Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy at the centre of an international custody battle eight years ago, has reportedly joined Cuba's Young Communist Union.
He was quoted by Communist youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde as saying he will never let down ex-President Fidel Castro and his brother Raul.
Elian, now 14, was six when relatives in Miami lost their battle to keep him in the US.
He was returned to Cuba in mid-2000 with his father.
Juventud Rebelde said in its Sunday edition the boy was among 18,000 people who joined the Young Communist Union on Saturday.

But...
Then Gore gets enough Cuban votes (while still losing the overall Cuban vote) to win Florida by enough of a margin that it's not close enough for Bush to steal. Gore is president.
That means no war in Iraq, no tax cuts for the rich, no Katrina ****up, Osama bin Laden would have been caught at Tora Bora, no No Child Left Behind, no bankruptcy bill, no giveaway drug bill to the drug companies and maybe the August 6th memo is taken seriously enough that 9/11 does not happen.
I think keeping Elian here away from his father would have been a price worth paying to make all of those things happen.

The father didn't want to stay because the rest of his family was being held under threat back in Cuba. That was pretty obvious.
Regardless, the father had (has) no rights. The father was not in control of the situation. The boy was sent out of freedom and into a communist hellhole. There is no justification for that. Not one.
The stated goal at the time was to "reunited" a family. That didn't happen and it never was going to happen and everyone involved knew it. It was a shame. The real goal was to represent Cuba as just another country with a culture equal to the USA.
It was all about a boy and his dictator. It was a sad ugly day for the USA, courtesy of a sad ugly socialist loving man named Bill Clinton and his sad ugly socialist loving man of an attorney general named Janet Reno.
