In this thread (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023007360#post16) about changing the Washington Redskins' name, Atman/Pedro/Texas Toast makes a decent & relevant comment.

13. The feelings are complex? No. If it's offensive to the group it refers to, it should be changed.

16. Then I guess we need to eliminate 90% of DU forums
Someone is offended by just about anything here at any given moment.

Wow.
KC

He's just butthurt because he's the one always doing the offending. The gals pounce on him something fierce.
-
It is offensive to the group and "I" speak for the whole group. DUmmies are always speaking for some class of victims or, often, all Americans.
-
Amazing! AssMan finally got one right! I think American Indians have gave them the green light. Everyone else, shut the **** up!

A moment of silence for a moment of clarity.

15. Yet no one seems to have a problem with the "Fighting Irish"
File this under "Selective Outrage."

17. Is this offensive to you?
Because they have the same lineage as the Notre Dame and Celtics mascots.
after which a copy of a 19th-century cartoon mocking the Irish race

19. What if I said it was?
I'm Irish...and I've never been in a fist fight. Fifty-four years on Earth, and while I've been drunk plenty, I've never been in a fist fight (the ND mascot is a little leprechaun guy with his fists up, ready to fight). Would we be okay calling the Notre Dame's team "The Drunken Irish Leprechauns?" I'm offended by fist fights involving drunken Irishmen. But since I'm just a well-off white guy, it's okay to mock my background.
Soon, we'll have to name all sports teams LOLCATS and Laughing Babies. But then, those might be offensive to grumpy cat, dog lovers, and the scowling babies.
Hmmmm.
I always thought the evil twin was Cretin, from that island south of Greece.

20. So you are fine as being portrayed as a monkey.
If somebody drew a picture of you, depicted as a monkey because of your Irish background, you are fine with that? Because you are white. By the way, you weren't always considered to be "white" in this country.
Atman (26,202 posts) Thu Jun 13, 2013, 09:43 AM
24. Huh?
Where did I say I was "fine" with being portrayed as a drunken Irish leprechaun? (Monkey? Where did that come from?) I'm pointing out the hypocrisy and lunacy of the entire "mascot" thing. Notre Dame has millions of dollars invested in their "brand," as does the "Redskins" franchise. I'm not saying it's right. I'm certainly not endorsing it. I'm just acknowledging that once again, Americans' priorities are directed toward "protecting" anyone who isn't of white European descent from having their feelings hurt. Maybe it's historical guilt for having plundered the North American continent. But, again...soon we'll just name teams The Fluffy Kitties or The Cute Baby Animals. But I'm sure SOMEONE will still be offended.
BTW, I think it's hysterical that anyone who would call an Irishman "not white." Although, in the summer we're usually pink and/or freckled.

76. Were you offended by the DU'er who went by the name "Drunken Irishman"??
Atman (26,202 posts) Thu Jun 13, 2013, 05:08 PM
81. No.
Why would I be offended? Maybe he actually is a drunken Irishman! But a team mascot means more than an individual's screen name. A mascot represents a TEAM, and the image they want to portray. A screen name is about the individual.

26. I should alert on you...
I got a post hidden the other day, and locked out of my own thread, because I used words like that. The context didn't matter -- I was pointing out that Archie Bunker had used words like this all the time in the seventies, to illustrate prejudices. I listed some of the words, and the DU jury was outraged and offended. As a person of Irish heritage, and a DU, I feel I should be OUTRAGED at your use of the word Mick.
But I'm not. Because I'm a grownup.

28. I've had that happen three times
Posts hidden because someone took issue with HOW I said something, while not disputing the points being made...Sad.

30. It doesn't happen to me as much anymore because...
...26 members of the terminally outraged now have me on ignore.
There are so few people left reading my posts that no one bothers anymore.
^^^Yeah.
Probably more people over here read Atman, than do his fellow primitives on Skins's island.

Count me in as an Atman reader on CC. This further affirms my theory that if you let a lib talk long enough they will accidentally tell one truth.

Maybe it's historical guilt for having plundered the North American continent.
How come Rmoney is evil for being rich? Because it's unfair he has so many resources he could be sharing.
Right?
So how come we're supposed to have allowed this continent to remain undeveloped when the US was able to cure plagues, relieve famines and oppose multiple global tyrannies?
How come the indians don't have to share their wealth?

Anyone know what an Irish 7 course meal is ?
And, in a related story, Chris Matthews is allowed to use racial epitaphs like "Black Irish"...
It's okay for libs to be racist (http://newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2013/06/12/sleazy-matthews-ted-cruz-bill-oreilly-are-same-nazi-sympathizer-fath)

Chrissy Matthews is a sputtering, senile, drunken a**hole. MSNBC would save money by flying him to the homes of the people that watch his "show" and performing it live for them.
BTW, it's OK for libs to be racists, because, they're not racists.
Just ask them.

That would be a six-pack and a potato.
Atman, that part about all sports teams being named LOLcats, except that Grumpy Cat would be offended...that was pretty funny.
I kind of like "Mick" as a nickname for an Irish guy. "What a cute Mick." What's wrong with it?

That's the question I have. What is Mick short for or why is it considered derogatory? I'm clueless here.

I am Scots-Irish. I have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.
I never though of "Black Irish" as a derogatory term. But my grand-dad told me "Mick", "Paddy", and "bogtrotter" are fightin' words!

I love that my reply generated such awesome discussion. I just hope the OP doesn't think I intentionally tried to derail his thread...to wit, Libs demure at being racially offended.

I'm black Dutch. The reason we hooked a ride on the Mayflower. Used to be an extraordinary derogative term.

Always glad to accommodate my fellow degenerates here at CC! Killed many a rattlesnake when it ducked, heh, heh! Largest one measured 52", and had a girth of 11". My cat was tryin' to take it on defending her kittens.
