new tire rental places - poor rent tires monthly for three times the value

http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-rent-a-tire-20130609,0,1748795.story

When the tires on their Dodge Caravan had worn so thin that the steel belts were showing through, Don and Florence Cherry couldn't afford to buy a new set.

So they decided to rent instead.

The Rich Square, N.C., couple last September agreed to pay Rent-N-Roll $54.60 a month for 18 months in exchange for four basic Hankook tires. Over the life of the deal, that works out to $982, almost triple what the radials would have cost at Wal-Mart.

"I know you have to pay a lot more this way," said Florence Cherry, a 57-year-old nurse who drives the 15-year-old van when her husband, a Vietnam veteran, isn't using it to get to his job as a prison guard. "But we didn't really have a choice."

Socked by soaring tire prices and short on funds, growing numbers of Americans are renting the rubber to keep their cars rolling.

Rent-to-own tire shops are among the newest arrivals to a sprawling alternative financial sector focused on the nation's economic underclass. Like payday lenders, pawn shops and Buy Here Pay Here used-car lots, tire rental businesses provide ready credit to consumers who can't get a loan anywhere else. But that access doesn't come cheap.tp://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-rent-a-tire-20130609,0,1748795.story

High prices are driving more motorists to rent tires

Chains such as Rent-a-Wheel and Rimco are seeing business boom. Many consumers pay double or triple the cost of buying and face aggressive repossession policies.

First up, Skippy from New York City, although he lives in San Franscisco:

But then our government runs on the same short-term mentality much of the time.

2. So, when the tires get repossessed, the vehicle might be anywhere.

Then it can't be moved, without tires, gets impounded eventually, and the family can never afford to get it back.

Tires are $10 or so at the junk yards.

A nurse and a prison guard (public union wage) can`t afford or don`t have managed credit to get new tires at probably a hundred or so each?
That is a special kind of stupid.

That's what I thought too, Carl. Nurses make good money and assuming this lady has been a nurse for sometime, it said she was 57, she got to be making some good coin.

I ain't never heard of it... don't surprise me though. Fools and their money and all that.

I got curious and googled it. Yes there are places that rent tires. At least I'm assuming this place does cause their name is Rent a Tire.

So they'll pay $54.60 for 18 months instead of saving $54.60 for 5 or 6 months and paying cash. Geniuses.  ::)

It amazes me that people would think that paying 2-3 times the going price is the only way to do something.  I don't know how many places do 90-180 days same as cash, and they're at the point they're practically giving away Walmart credit cards again.

Unless, of course, you have a 390 FICO.  Nah, that can't be it.

Tires aren't just used. They're used up. They're consumables.

Renting tires is like renting a sack of potatoes.

But then DUmmies who use credit cards at the grocery store are sort of doing just that.

Wow - that's dumb - not the business owners, they are geniuses - but the rent to own people.

I never buy new tires. There is a place in the city that gets quality used tires. They install, balance, and dispose of your old tires for the cost of one new quality tire. They also guarantee them, so if it is defective they replace it free of charge.

I suspect the 'rent to own' places specialize in 'Low Profile' tires - which I think are among the stupidest things ever created.

Tires aren't that expensive.  You are a fool if you rent them and of course you are going to broke after RENTING your tires when you could pay for them and own them.  I'd never rent a tire or rims.  I heard a "Rent y0 Rimz" commercial on a radio ad in the past.  They usually play during summer months, so I'm sure when I'm not listening to talk radio, I'll hear those.  And yeah, I'm sure those fools "rent they rimz" for the same "deal".

A good tire will start at $100 (not including installation/balancing).  Size matters when it comes to cost... if you have 17- or 18-inch wheels, your tires will generally cost more than a stock 14- or 15-inch tire.  The 15-inch Yokohamas I bought were about $125 each with installation and balancing and have a 60,000-mile tread life.  The tires I bought for the MG went on 14-inch wheels and cost about $100 each with a similar tread life, but it was a harder tire for better performance.

Or you could just buy a $20 used one from the tire swappers in the barrio.

But if you buy "yo rimz", then when those rims are out of style, you have to buy new "rimz".

There's a couple Rent n Roll places here. They advertise that you can trade one set of rims for another when you get tired of them.

My next door neighbor Shannon (before he moved) was the manager of a tire store. One day I went out there to BUY (not rent) new tires. While waiting for installation I browsed by the rims that were in the display room. I asked about a couple of sets, and one set was around $5,000 as I recall. Then I thought, well what if you drive with them awhile and fall out of love with them and want to trade them in. I asked him what they would be worth on trade-in. He said basically zero. Now that's how to get rid of money that's burning a hole in your pocket !

We just put new tires on my car back in February, I think?  It was $800 for tires, installing, balancing, and an alignment.  I thought that was a good deal.  Yeah, that's a lot of money to spend all at once, but the car needed it.  It was a lot of money to spend, but we had it saved up because we knew the new tires were needed.  If people would just learn about savings accounts, they wouldn't have to rent their tires.

The truck and my old Jeep both had 18" tires.  All-season or snow tires with alignment, etc., run nearly $1000-1200 out the door.

But if you know you're going to need them 6 months in advance (and if you've kept up with the rotations and inflation to maximize the life of them) it really shouldn't be such an issue.

So why is it such an issue for some folks?

I do.  Delivering mail is VERY hard on tires and brakes.

My 60,000 mile tires might make it to 15,000, but I spent around $380 for the set, including road hazard (very nice to have with a mail vehicle.  I've already had 2 flats fixed under this warranty.  :-))

My truck got a set of tires last spring, $220 each for 4, but they still have over 60% tread left, even after 20,000 miles,  including towing a camper from Virginia to Daytona Beach back in February.

Speaking troof-2-powah there -

Before we all ended up with LLVs (because they collapsed so many city carrier routes in the district they ended up with a bunch of excess trucks) I would go through three sets of tires a year. That's how I found the used tire place I still use today.

I got road hazard on my new tires too since we live in a constantly-under-construction area.  I understanding using your car daily like that, you would have to replace your tires more often.  But for someone like me, or others here, who commute to and from work only, we don't really have to maintain the car as much.
