Exclusive: Top secret court order requiring Verizon to hand over all call data shows scale of domestic surveillance under Obama
Glenn Greenwald - The Guardian
<snip>
SIDE NOTE: Greenwald caught a lot of flak from the die-hard Obama cultists for challenging Obama on drone strikes. I'm mostly OK with zotting jihadis but the issue rent the Proglodytes asunder as they were torn between fealty to their lord and savior versus a LOT of fealty to their lord and savior. IIRC, the only thing that kept Greenwald from being excommunicated was the birth control kerfuffle.
Anyhoo...
...all the comments focus on how terrible it is that ordinary Americans are being treated by the US government as if they were evil, dangerous, nefariously-minded terrorist republicans.
Why, this is as outrageous as saying a liberal ought to be audited by the IRS...if they actually paid taxes, that is.
But apparently a few semi-principled Proglodytes offer a stinging rebuke against the selective outrage being expressed:

I hope the catch the leaker and prosecute the person to the fullest extent of the law. And I hope the DOJ is swift in empaneling a grand jury to indict the Guardian reporters as co-conspirators.

I like the 'its only phone records and not taped calls-so its okay defense'
No, it isn't okay, DUmbos - and let me explain why.
Lets say 'Joe Smith' is believed to be guilty of a crime - since they have Smith's phone records, the owners of every number that his phone was used to call, and the owners of every number that called Smith back are now under investigation.
What if you accidentally dialed Smith's number ?
What if you are cold-calling for a marketer, and tried to sell Smith some insurance ?
--And thats just the beginning - here is probable scenario #2.
Joe Smith has just applied for status as a tax-free organization. The IRS uses the phone data to mine out 'supporters' ,and targets them for audit. Now, even though Smith is an evil baby-eating rethug and deserves to be audited - he also happens to be your uncle and he calls you and your family fairly regularly.

You really think the IRS would do that?

They would not do that. We can all trust the IRS now. Need I remind you all of the preezy's wisdom of how we should just ignore the voices that warn of tyranny?
If he was white you would believe him.

So how do they square this with their loving support of what Manning did?

You only need to know 2 words about Manning.
HE'S GAY!
It's like a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card at the DUmp.

The only principle that the Manning case adheres to is their hatred of you and your society.
Their's is the superior society and so the rules are different for them.

Gina, it's not a question of what the IRS will do, it's a question of what they WON'T do.
And it's a damned short list.

It's not just the IRS. Holder would have access to this information. How many reporters have had their phone info. collected this way? There are numerous ways this information can be used "to punish" people who do not politically share your views.

I was doing that tongue in cheek thing

It sounds dirty when you say it.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me daily, I must be an Obama supporter.

You better believe Sparky Gina. About a few years both hubby and I took a loan out on our 401 k for home repairs. We went down to our bank to set up a new checking account so we did not mix the money in with our regular accounts. We needed an easy way to separate the money for the repairs from our every day bills in case we wanted to sell in the future.
We both had checks from the 401K but as they were combined slightly to over $10,000 the bank refused. We had to make an appointment with the bank manager to Explain why we NEEDED another checking Account.
This was so Odd to me, we had to convince the manager why we wanted another account. I told her about our plans and that it involved allot of money.
She took our checks and tried not to smile as to us, this was a huge amount to us, and ALLOWED us a separate account. How nice our bank allowed us to have a separate bank account for a reason we should not have had to explain to ANYONE.
Now another thing, when we had saved up enough money to pay cash for our Jet Skies, the dealership dropped the price for the skies and trailer by $ 500.00 so he would not be required to submit a report of a cash deal over $10,000, Yup, for accessory's we had to go to another dealer to buy them.
I expect a big wangle over hubby's 401 k any day now. He worried about the stock market and over 59 took out half to pay off the house and buy a 5 year old car. OH yes, someone is watching to see where your money is and what you are doing with it. No such thing as privacy and a mind your own business today.
The supermarkets you shop at using a check or credit card have a tally of everything you have bought in their store.
The public works keeps out an eye for people that begin to use more electricity or water and come out with the cops to see why.
Gina, we are being remotely watched by not just the government but by private businesses to your own credit union or bank to the people next door or down the street and every place you buy anything unless you pay cash.
Only privacy is to go camping and hope the big bears don't run to ranger Rick to tell him you are drinking beer or playing a boom box too loud and scaring the critters away.

Banks have to report any cash deposits over $10k, unless they are suspicious of the account holder, then they report cash deposits of anything over $5k.
That was a rule awhile ago, it's probably changed since then.

Glenn Greenwald isn't a knob gobbler, ergo what he did was wrong, wrong wrong...
