I so remember reading somewhere years ago about the Indian Tribe that had perfect balance.

It was said that even when drunk as a skunk these men and boys could walk across a 4x4 board 200 feet in the air and not fall.

Recruiting these workers to build sky scrapers became a cut throat business with much competition
between the  recruiter's and the contractors.

Needless to say many dirty deeds came about, to the Indians who believed all the promises of the recruiters.

I guess the question would be .. "Who gets to tie the knots in the rope?"

My little, and I do mean very little, experience with steel work, everyone tied their own.

Yikes!

If left to me, no building would be higher than 10 feet, probably!

How many people died while building the Empire State Building?
Though rumors of hundreds of people dying on the work site circulated during the time of its construction, official records state that only five workers were killed: one worker was struck by a truck; a second fell down an elevator shaft; a third was hit by a hoist; a fourth was in a blast area; and a fifth fell off a scaffold.

http://history1900s.about.com/od/1930s/a/empirefacts.htm

7 million man hours taking 13 months to build the Empire State Building.

It's impossible to calculate an OSHA DART rate based on this info since the most severe form of injury is referenced here -- death -- and that there were five during the construction.

But we can come close.

0.143 is the DART rate associated with only Deaths. Something tells me that OSHA wouldn't be entirely thrilled with that statistic today. Each death is investigated by OSHA.

Formula:

N = number of deaths
200,000 = the number of average work hours in a year for a single worker (certainly not the case in this case, but it's the best we can do).
7,000,000 = the number of man hours worked to erect the ESB.

5*200,000 = 1,000,000/7,000,000 = 0.143 DART rate for only Deaths.

There are only 8760 hours in a year.

I should've made that term clear. 200,000 is the base number of hours worked by 100 full-time employees.

That makes more sense, then.

Nor can I. Hell, I get white-knuckled on a one-story ranch house roof.

I had a job once that was one-story high on a scaffold. Doing pipe work. Fitting 8" iron pipe. Gawd, I hated that job.
