NEW ORLEANS -- NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas says that at least 12 people were shot at a Mother's Day second-line parade in the 7th Ward.
The youngest victim in the shooting was 10 years old.
Police say there were 200 people at the corner where shots rang out, and 300 to 400 people at the second line in all.
EMS took nine people to University Hospital; eight were suffering from gunshot wounds, while another was injured in a fall while escaping the shooting. Three of those victims who were shot are in critical condition.
Here are a few of the muthas waitin' on word of their lil darlins.

Once again I Googled "NOLA, Mutha's day parade, 7th Ward+Tea Party gathering" and got no hits.
Hard to explain.

"Second-line?" What's that mean in non-NOLAsian?

Parade.

Parade.
They have a similar one for Father's Day. All the men walk down the street and the kids try and guess who their dads are. :whistling:

Actually it's the people in the parade, behind the band, which is the first line....I think that's the way it goes. It's been a few years.

Sounds like they had a lovely mother's day in the chocolate city.

OUCH!!!! That's gonna leave a mark!
As an aside... I was watching some show on TV, think it was Gangland, about the New Orleans gangs that relocated to Houston after Katrina. Long story short, they found that the justice system in Texas was a little more unforgiving than it was in New Orleans.
End result: The New Orleans gangs left Texas.

Mom tells me that in the 40's when she was in N.O. she saw some interesting funerals.
On the way to the cemetery a small band would play and march ahead of the mourners. One could tell the sex of the departed by the music the band played. If the band played a rousing tune the deceased was a man-------One more woman up for grabs. If the band played a dirge the deceased was a female-----One less woman in the comunity.

H5 for your knowledge of New Orleans culture - I graduated high school in the New Orleans area and had to look it up. :rotf:
-
Think about it, boys and girls--in less than eight years since Katrina, our tax dollars, donations, etc., have amounted to the point where every citizen of New Orleans would have been given the equivalent of about $300K.
And the place is STILL a shithole.

Hi 5 for admitting that! My Mom was raised in Gulfport, my Uncle migrated to NOLA from there.....bought a shotgun in Gretna. Colorful people over there. :whatever: I spent my summers on the MGC, and when NOLA had the Worlds Fair, my brother and I took the train over almost daily to visit my Uncle. I learned A.LOT. :-)

I was reading about this in a paper from the UK and the comments were hilarious. They were talking about the photos saying "Are all the people there fat?" :rotf: No, just the one's on welfare it seems.

Wrong, vesta. If you got your information from your mother, she lied to you. Either that or you were so busy listening to the cacophony inside your skull that you misheard her.
NOLA/Cajun funerals are characterized by the dirge that's played by the band on the way TO the cemetery. It represents the grief felt by those who are left behind.
On the way BACK from the cemetery, that's when the music becomes much more upbeat, which represents the joy as the person who passed has gone on to heaven.

Deadliest Catch gave the captain who died a NO funeral on the show. Here is a bystanders recording of that funeral. This was my first time watching the "uncut" version of this...I only saw what they showed on DC.

Yep, that is the way it goes. Being from Baton Rouge, have observed on TV the passing of a native many times. I had many party times there many years ago when it was not thuggish and dangerous.

Eupher, mother was recounting what she observed almost 70 years ago. The explanation she was given 70 years ago may have come from someone that had their facts a bit wrong .
One has to picture a young woman back then coming out of a backwoods small town in New England finding herself around people of the deep south and running into a funeral the likes of something she never imagined.
I am so fortunate that I still have my 92 year old mother that still drives her car and can remember things that far back in time.
Shame on you Eupher for calling her a liar.

vesta, you'd be a complete ****ing moron if you weren't more stupid than a moron. Where does that put you? Imbecile? Idiot? I ain't gonna look it up.
Nobody called your mother a liar. The story you were telling -- regardless where it came from -- is simply wrong. Factually wrong. In fact, YOU don't know what YOU'RE talking about. Lacarnut has confirmed it -- see above.
If your mother is 92 and she told the story that you related, that puts her in the camp of either forgetting what she saw (entirely plausible as she's 92 - Option #1) or YOU are so batshit ****ing crazy that YOU forgot what the hell you were told (Option #2).
Take your pick.
I'm betting on Option #2.

Just google New Orleans funerals and Wikipedia will give you the entire scoop

Now now my dear-----------"Wrong, vesta. If you got your information from your mother, she lied to you."
Now why would an old lady lie to her daughter about something as silly as this ? She told me what she saw and what was told to her by someone at the time with her.
I just thank heavens she was not sitting on the grassy knoll that day in Dallas. Each an every one of the onlookers had a different story of what they saw and heard, None of them were lying, they just had different prospectives of an act they were not expecting.
Far as I am concerned I do not have to defend Myself and " You may be right I may be crazy but it just may be I am the lunatic your looking for".
I make a good target for a Bully as I am twice your age and things do get jumbled up from the past. I appreciate it when I am corrected over some miss guidance and the first to stand corrected on many things.
You can Bully me all you want, don't bother me, I do have a sense of humor about myself. HOWEVER,
When you attack my MOTHER as a LIER to me or others that's when I go to Battle Stations.
With all due respect, you Sir, are a piece of work to go after the mother of anyone you may dislike.
Your deportment gives rise to wondering about your mother and if you were ever taught the social skills
by her or another in your family to avoid a punch between the running lights.

Now now my dear-----------"Wrong, vesta. If you got your information from your mother, she lied to you."
Lots and lots of needless blather snipped. It's so bad it's not worth the band with to quote it.
Shut up, DUmb****. Just. Shut. Up. :whatever:
Your commentary is pointless, needless, and worthless. You couldn't stay on topic if the life of your 92-year-old mother depended on it.
Does your mother supervise you when you write your DUmbass posts?
If she does, she's failing miserably. Or maybe you're writing your dumbass shit when she's taking her nap.
Go stand in the corner, vesta. And stop sucking your thumb.

Right SIR, aye aye Sir, as you say Chief. I would double time it to the corner but I would give myself a black eye when my boobs hit me in the face.

Vesta...pretty please. 10 words per post, max. And your boobs wouldn't hit you in your face. More likely you'd have bruises on them from where you kept kicking them.
-

No need to double-time to the corner. Range walk. And keep your weapon pointed up and down range.
No comment about the boobs. Lord God Almighty, no comment about the boobs.

Mother's Day Parade Shooter Arrested After Being Caught on Surveillance Camera
Slate (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2013/05/16/akein_scott_arrested_in_new_orleans_by_police.html)
Scott, who was booked on 20 counts of attempted second-degree murder, is scheduled to have his first court appearance this morning. He was identified by authorities after surveillance footage and stills of the incident were released to the public.
It's worth noting that the teenager has a history of arrests, including a March arrest for illegally carrying a weapon while in possession of narcotics which resulted in a $15,000 bail. (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2013/05/16/akein_scott_arrested_in_new_orleans_by_police.html)
now there's a ****ing surprise...

The fact the punk was even let out on bail at the end of April and waited until Mother's Day before showing his ass again -- now there's an even BIGGER ****ing surprise.

I am surprised no one got killed. Just a bunch injuries. Good thing they caught the shooter.
