It's official: Almost half the country is stupid.
Now we can combine all the 'stupid' threads into one and acknowledge that while some states may be stupider than others, as a whole, almost half of our country is stupid. They are distributed throughout all 50 states.
They vote against their own best interests, they think the Earth is 5000 yrs old, believe Glenn Beck is the Messiah, call themselves "pro-life" while executing inmates, cutting food-aid and healthcare to struggling families, & sending kids to war. They believe freedom means free to trash the environment, be a bigot, oppress others, and let people suffer without Govt assistance.
They think education and science is a Liberal conspiracy, they have a rabid disdain for facts, logic, and reasoning, they believe the only way to help the middle class is to give rich people more money. They believe workers rights is communism and income inequality is capitalism.
They believe poor people are destroying society even though no poor person has ever outsourced US jobs or caused a global financial collapse, rich people did that. They think we should cut social welfare for struggling kids & families even though we spend double on corporate welfare for extremely profitable billion dollar corporations than we do on social welfare.
They believe homosexuals will destroy the sanctity of marriage while they themselves are on their 4th marriage. They believe a women's right to choose is wrong yet they try to make society a terrible place to raise a child for poor people. They believe everyone should have guns but healthcare should be limited. They would rather drop bombs on other countries than drop food on ours. They believe in "small Govt" unless that Govt is wiretapping its citizens, drug testing its citizens, executing inmates, oppressing minorities, starting wars on every continent, and handing out corporate subsidies.

So yes, almost half the country is stupid. They're called Conservatives.

You know, when you have to call those who disagree with you politically "stupid" in order to counter their arguments, you are on pretty shaky ground.
I believe that I know my own "best interests" better than anybody else. My current personal goals are to pay off my debt, buy a house, get married, and have children, not necessarily in that order (though children will likely be after marriage). I don't want the government's help with any of that. I'm middle class, and I really don't care what people who are wealthier than me make. How does that effect me? I get the salary that I agreed to when I signed my contract, and I do the work that I am paid to do. If the CEO makes 100 times more than me, so what?
I believe that actions have consequences. Condoms can be bought at thousands of stores in every neighborhood. It is not difficult to get a prescription for a birth control pill. Choosing not to use contraception does not mean that you should have the right to kill your child because it is inconvenient. There are multiple charities that will help women with their pregnancies, there are thousands of couples who would love to adopt, and there are many organizations that will help families with children. A pregnant woman can walk into any WIC office, show her income and some other paperwork, and get assistance. The same for any mother with children under 5.
I believe that welfare should not be a career option. I have no problem with short term unemployment, but not being able to find some sort of job after a year tells me that you aren't looking all that hard. I do support drug testing for all individuals accepting government assistance. If you can't pass an employment drug screening, then why should we pay for you to not be working?

Not to nitpick, but that's not entirely true. I understand your assertion, but there are a large number of people who would fall into the average intelligence category. Therefore, it has to be less than half of the people you meet that are below average.
In the most simple terms possible regarding intelligence, there is a percentage of dumb people, a percentage of average people, and a percentage of smart people.

Because while there are all kinds of people in this world with different values, lifestyles, goals, incomes, things that make them happy or sad, hobbies, etc., you seem to be so smart that you can put us all in a one-size-fits-all box and decide what's good for us.
I think what you really mean is we don't all vote for YOUR best interests. Somehow you think the more handouts you get, the more handouts, taxes, government spending you can force on the entire country, the better off we are. What's going to happen when the ratio between takers and givers is SO lopsided (think Greece) the country can no longer afford it's handouts. Because if I were rich, I'd have the resources to take my money and/or myself somewhere else where the government couldn't take what I have. It's simple logic. That puts the burden on the ever shrinking middle class and working poor.
Even if you confiscated 100% of the money the rich has, you couldn't make a dent in the debt or fund even one bloated social program. You guys say "I want", "I deserve" and consider that wisdom. But you never look ahead at the consequences of what you want. Then you call everyone else who has looked at what you consider "our best interest" and realised the danger of such selfishness and call them stupid. When you guys can show, using logic, not talking points and ridiculous arrogance, how your demands have positive outcomes, socially, mentally, financially and that gives people a sense of independence and pride in themselves, by all means, I'd love to hear it.

There are very, VERY few things government does that CANNOT be done in the private sector, and everything government does that the private sector can/should be doing, is costing US the taxpayers 4-6 times more than it should!
(EX: "Cash for Clunkers" $4,500 to anyone that buys a new car, and has their "clunker" scrapped/destroyed.
Result: Each $4,500 check cost taxpayers over $24,000, prices for used cars spiked, and used parts became scarce and expensive.)
It's rapidly getting to the point where simply "taxing the rich" and "paying their fair share" (whateverthehell THAT means) won't work. "The RICH", outside of government, are getting tired of supporting your ungrateful asses.
I think some (very few) of the DUmmies are starting to realize their gravy train is about at the end of the line, and are starting to worry.
