My Grandpa's Funeral.
Just got back from NC a few minutes ago. It's a LOOOOONG damn drive from Hendersonville, NC. to Key Largo, Fl. 13+ hours.

I'm too wound up to go to sleep right now, so I thought I'd share with you folks a bit, if you don't mind.

My grandma died 2 years ago after a long slog dealing with dementia and several other serious physical ailments. My grandpa was relatively healthy, other than being nearly completely deaf and blind. He has been ready to join her since the day she died, but his body was too healthy until relatively recently. He stopped taking meds (other than painkillers) and had refused all treatments about 2-3 months ago.

Blah, blah, blah

...there was a flag on the coffin. I knew he'd been in the Army Air Corps, so I didn't think much of it. But then I heard a note from what sounded like a trumpet. I thought it was the music from the CD my sister made to play during the service...again, I didn'y think much of it.

The I heard measured footsteps walking down the aisle, they belonged to an Airmen, two Airmen, and as they stood on each end of the coffin, Taps began to play. That note I'd heard before was the bugler. As it played, they folded up the flag, like you see in movies. They walked up to my first cousin, Art. They presented the flag to him on behalf of the President of the United States in honor of his service to our country.

We had all already cried several times before this...but that got everyone damn near sobbing.

I found out later at the wake, that my Grandpa had worked on a top secret project, developing Radar, and that he also helped receive like 200k wounded coming in from the Battle of the Bulge. There was more things he did that they told me, but those were the two that stuck in my head.

...he still didn't want to tell her. But she had found out that after 50 years, it had been declassified, and once she convinced him. He told her everything.

I had no idea my Grandfather was a war hero.

Holy shit.

Touching story, DUmmy MynameisBlarney, very touching.

But DUmmy, this is the DUmp, and at the DUmp it's all about nutcase nadin.

When are you going to learn, it's all about nutcase nadin?

3. My dad been gone two years now
He was in the resistance in Poland during WW II. He told me the stories six months before he passed, and my husband before. He was right when he told me my mom, or my siblings would not get it...both my husband and I have seen combat, which he understood would let us get it in ways none in my family would understand.

What he did to keep his siblings and my grand father alive was war. It changed him, like war changes all. It was well beyond the foraging for potatoes trying to avoid German patrols. Trust me n that, it included potatoes.

My mom asked, foretaste. My dad was right. So my husband and I talk about it. We know it was a precious gift...but one we know, and that's it.

See, the crazy bald dwarf gets it. She gets it, and DUmmy MynameisBlarney is just oblivious to it all.

Nadin saw combat in the nuclear Battle of Fuki, and her addled submarine rider had a submerged cruise with a miscalibrated oxygen sensor.

They've both seen "Sands of Iwo Jima". Twice.

So they get it, and you don't.

It's all about nadin.

Nadin should have built a screen door on that submarine before descending.

Meanwhile, Calpig must be on drugs while typing tonight...

Because you were too wound up to go to sleep, you came here to talk to us.

How lucky we are to have been here to read this!

We learn these histories, and they help us understand what happened, and maybe even why.

It's a precious thing.

We are in your debt...

Safe passage to your Grandfather.

How nauseatingly "cutely wutesy."

Nadin's a narcissistic wench, though. Even if true, how dare she jump as high as her stubby little legs will allow her, and scream "Look at me!!!" in someone else's thread about their dead grandfather?! How callous, and heartless can one be?

I wasn't aware that the fake hubby was old enough to crew a Gato or Balao class boat.

Oh, wait...before subs he skippered a DD in 1944.

My mistake.

Or, was it SEAL-qualified HALO jumper into North Korea?

Hard to keep track.

Huh!?!?!?  How do you do that?

I am sorry for MynameisBlarney's loss.

According to recent threads on DU everyone that has served in the armed forces is a war criminal and saying thanks for your service is not necessary. So I will skip all that.

No not you.

My comment applies to the DUmmies and their "we hate all things military" threads.

I bet they have both seen combat. Fighting each other over the last doughnut.
Hubby's military service is not that hard to find out by someone with the proper resources. I am sure his service, while probably honorable, did not include combat.

As far as the primitive's grandfather goes. RIP Sir, you served your country in it's time of need and you have earned your rest. :taps:

When I was on I-I duty, we did burial details all of the time.  It did not matter if someone showed up in birkenstocks, dreadlocks and a code pink t-shirt.  When the firing detail did their thing, taps was played and the flag was presented by a GySGT with a high and tight in dress blues, every one cried.  After doing 100's of them, still one of the most moving ceremonies I have ever seen.

Yeah.  Not exactly Das Boot, Run Silent - Run Deep, or Hell and High Water kind of material.

Doc, he was a QM on a 688-class out of Pearl at one point.

Did we do "interesting" stuff?  Yup.  Like he almost certainly has, I too have a Navy Expeditionary Medal, which qualifies me for membership in the VFW (where I'm a life member.)

But by no means am I ever calling myself a "combat veteran."  We did not exchange fire with the "bad guys" at any point.  If we had, that would have meant someone on board (like the QM's, ST's, etc.) had just ****ed up majorly.  Been near the bad guys, yes.  Never went bang-bang with them.

You mean your boat was not trading MK 48's with alphas?

Uh, that would be a big ****ing NO.

Or Sierras.  Or Akulas.  Or Victor III's.  You figure it out from there.

So, then, I would expect that the stray Charlie II or Oscar would be out, right?

I'm pretty sure that I was in some Soviet/East German border guard's riflescope once.  Not a fun feeling.

Was on the bridge of my ship looking almost eye to eye with the Iranian helocopter pilot that decided to hover over our deck going through the Straits of Hormuz. Probably about as close as I have been to the bad guys. But enough as well for my VFW membership.

I also did EMS in Prince George's county in Maryland so I guess I could count that as combat experience. :rotf:

That would have been a good time to "malfunction" the Phalanx.

I can't imagine anyone being dumb enough to let Nads near a fire.  It'd be like trying to put it out by putting a big, leaky, and too-damaged-to-move drum of used cooking grease in its path.

Closest I've been to combat was a 78 day deployment in the Indian Ocean as part of the Kitty Hawk Battle Group during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. We were stationed 100-150 NM ahead of the carrier as part of the defense screen.

Isn't that a scene from Rambo? Except it's from a ship. Also reminds me of the scene from Top Gun

Nads is a liar.  Maybe she just makes shit up, maybe she just talks as if she has done things she has read of others doing, I don't know but it doesn't matter.  She is still a liar.

I don't know of anyone that's been in that situation that talks (brags) about it.  Bullets flying around you, your fellow human being bleeding, the smell of sweat and fear and blood and chordite, people shouting orders, others screaming, and the sound of rifles firing.  Seriously, who the **** wants to remember all that, ever, and it's daily with Nads.

I don't talk about my experiences, and I won't here either.  I will say this about the first time, I wasn't brave.  I was scared beyond anything else, ever.  The details all sort of run together in my mind.  Somehow, I did what I had to do.  It is not something I like talking about at all.
