So my niece may never go shopping with me again
(which, in some ways wouldn't be a bad thing for me).
We went over to the Mall of America for lunch and on our way out she stopped in a store to look for some clothes for work. She found a simple A-line skirt made out of a good quality cotton/poly blend and it appeared to be well made (I'm old enough that I'll sometimes check out how the seams and hem is done).
First I see the label "Made in Bangladesh"....Then I seen the price $98.
I follow my niece around the store ranting "If you're going to pay $98 for an a-line skirt it damn well better have "Made in the USA" and a union labels in it. Do you have any idea what the working conditions they have in Bangladesh and what they get paid?"
Then I started muttering about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and obscence profits until, much to the relief of the clerk who had been trying to help her, my niece gave up and decided we should leave.
On the way home we had a calmer discussion about some of these issues but I was at a loss when she asked me where she could buy made in the USA clothes.
I've begun to think that I'm going to have to drag my sewing maching out of the back of the closet and actually start sewing again (assuming I remember how).

Only at DU, do you see grown folks acting like total idiots in public who can't wait to get home and brag about it on DU.
They go into these stores with their holier than thou attitudes, they harass some kid making min wage then think they are changing the world. :mental:

You should definitely do it dflprincess, and post lots of pictures of the clothes you make...we can never have too many ridiculous pictures from the DUmmies to laugh at.

...and no doubt would be an even better thing for her.

The DUches just never get out of being 13 years old and wonder why nobody likes them and their lives are a total disaster.
-
My understanding is that those manufacturing jobs are highly sought after over there. The ones that have them enjoy a higher standard of living than their caste would have allowed previously. So the primitive obviously hates the brown people and wants them to continue living in poverty.
-
What's the going mark-up rate in the manufacture of clothing these days? I suspect it's based on labor costs plus materials.
The retailer (I would think) is going to multiply what they paid the manufacturer by a least two, if not three.
DUmmies are clueless about how costly it is to do business in this country.

My story on why my daughter would not shop with me starts when she was 14 years old.
We went to a Mall and there was a fur store we decided to check out just for giggles. I had left my reading glasses in the car so unless the prices and origion of fur were printed in good size I had a problem.
I followed her about the store as she told me the prices and origion of the coats and wraps. We came to one spectacular coat with what I though was a price of $3,000 bucks. The origion was Russia and the type of fur all I could see was RA----. I jumped to conclusions and called to her to see the coat made of friggin RAT fur. I was aghast at price and the animal it came from.
Poor kid came running over and read the tag with her sharp eyes to tell me the fur was Raccoon and price $800.00.
I had caused a scene in a fur store, and it took her a year or so see the humor of this, to this day she reminds me to wear my glasses at the Mall and stay out of fur shops.
I am reminded of Nixon and his wife's Republican cloth coat. Not me, I want the real thing but most likely will never afford it.

I wore a gorgeous 3/4 fox fur coat to a formal event that a friend had loaned me. She had inherited it. It was very cumbersome, heavy and hot.
-
Then I seen the price
She talks like a nut, using the grammar of a loser.

Yup, I found a full length mink coat at Goodwill for $50.00 and only wore it when the temperature went below freezing. Heavy sucker, I wore it to work when the wind chill went to 10 below zero to work on the night shift. It was just a 4 minute walk to my car and back but with no way to heat the Jeep up, by the time I got home I was breaking a sweat.
For some reason fur coats with torn lining are discarded at Goodwill, all one needs is a needle and thread to repair it.
I found an Arctic Airforce jacket one year, wolf fur around the hood. I wore it to work and had 3 Ex Airforce Vets ask where I had gotten it.
Little known fact to the civilian public, Military bases will hold sales of out dared equipment, mattresses and clothing every couple years. Never know what one can find and most of the stuff is bran new. I think I paid $3.00 for the Pilots jacket new no sign of any name or insignia on it. and $5.00 each for 3 new mattresses.

Sorry Gobucks both of my Grammers are dead so don't you start underlining my posts as what done when I was a kid to send back to me.
Good incentive for anyone to write to anyone when misspellings and grammar are incorrect and pointed out to the writer.
If you wish to become my proof reader or editor great, no problem, Just correct my mistakes, have fun but don't expect me to pay you for your work.

Maybe, just maybe, she is a nut and a loser. ;)

I want to be around people like that while shopping so I can tell them to STFU while paying $100 for a skirt.

Ummm, vesta. GOBucks was pointing out the poor grammar of the DUmmy's original post. It wasn't about you.
BS for that one.

Then you can be a focus in one of their bouncies about how a right winger attacked them

The stupid bitch had no right to tell her niece how to spend her money in the first place.

And if that happened, it would be a badge of honor. :cheersmate:

Exactly. That's why I would have loved to be there to say it.

Well now to be fair, I did say in that post "She talks like a nut", so I can understand why vestanumbers thought it was about her.

Really bitch? You have so little class that you'd follow a friend/relative (probably even a stranger) around a store screeching loudly while they're trying to shop? And you really think that's acceptable behavior? You know, a reasonable person would wait until they got in the car to have a conversation about...good freaking Lord, you were acting like a harpy in the middle of a store? Do you seriously have NO shame? What a loser! Barring that, if you simply couldn't wait, why not just suggest you 2 have a cup of coffee or something and then finish shopping? You know, my guess is she doesn't give a rip about your bullshit. And she'll probably keep buying clothes she likes. She's probably even smart enough to understand the cost of living is much lower than here so they don't need as much as we do. People in this country make money thanks to the manufacture of that skirt too. But you don't think about that, do you?

This would be a good place to apply the trivium before jumping to conclusions.
Have I ever heard of a rat fur coat?
Do I know what rat fur looks like?
Does it make sense that a high end store would sell an expensive coat made of rat fur?
Does anything in my experience support the existence of a $3000 coat made of rat fur?
Do I know I have trouble reading clothing tags when I don't have my reading glasses with me?
These are just questions I would ask myself before freaking out. YMMV.

That wasn't relief. that was embarassment for what you were doing to your niece in public.
Your niece gave up because she didn't want you continue making an ass out of yourself in public.
$5 says she went home and asked your sister/her mom if you were adopted.

Why not just ask Algore...his mother used to sing him the "Union Label" song before it actually became a song...kinda like TiT was a part of Seal Team 6 before there was a Seal Team 6 (both should have taken a Google 101 class from Nadin).

In the fur business, "rats" are muskrats.
Muskrat fur, properly prepared and dyed, rivals mink or any other luxury fur, at a lower price.
It would not be unusual for a fur coat made from muskrat pelts to retail for several thousand dollars.
