VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A violent and terrifying weekend at the Ocean Front included shootings, stabbings and several assaults.

Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms says approximately 40,000 people were in the area for "Beach Week," an event geared toward college students.

But for residents who've lived at the Beach for years, the large, unruly crowds and violence that ensued won't soon be forgotten.

"I've lived here for so long and to see a sight like that it's frightening," Evelyn Griggs told WAVY.com. "I wondered what in the world is happening."

The local beach (Tybee Island) has Orange Crush every year. It used to be sponsored by Savannah State's fraternities and sororities. It was cancelled for several years due to shooting and overall violence. The last few years, it has been "unofficial" and unsponsored; and it has been more peaceful. Word of mouth is spread via social media.

Last year there was a complaint about trash left behind...this year students came to the beach early Monday morning to clean up. All in all, I think the local college students have learned their lessons and are trying to keep the hoodlums out.

I'm really glad progress is being made.

LOL..it seems to be in some places. Maybe the hoodlums that used to come here are going to Va. beach now. Or maybe they are satified with Freaknik.

It's disturbing.  With everything our youth has to entertain themselves, why they think rioting is fun is mind boggling.

Even with all the focus on bullying, that's worse today. Fight clubs attacking each other and smash mobs trashing stores.  That's what happens when the child has no discipline or consequences, you get a society full of adult hoodlums and criminals.

Lived at VA Beach in the 80's most interesting thing that happend was when somehow a man managed to get a permit to bring in a trained bear to wrestle any on comers.

The bear had been declawed  and a mussel on his face and a ring was set up.   Naturally the Seals at the base wanted a go at the bear as did Airforce,Marines and Coast Guard.

What fun, we watched as this bear took down all of the above in 2 minutes or less.  I hate bears in general but I felt sorry for the brute as he was huffing and puffing at the end.

Did the bear have a clam or an oyster on his face?

No he the bear was fed Scallops, deep fat fried and the shells tied together to make his face plate.
