Never know what you'll find.
Took a call from a guy with a Victrola for sale. I have not had much success with them, only cylinder players. I went to his house anyway as I was hoping to find more.
Well, the Victrola was beautiful, in perfect working order and a great finish. Then I asked about anything in the garage he might want to sell, "nothing", the usual answer and my usual response is "lets take a look". Found 3 small antique tables he was storing out there and got those, plus a few nice jars. Then there was the large industrial oak cabinet. It was massive and very cool with metal dividers in each drawer. Must have been over 300 pounds and it was all we could do for the two of us to load it in my truck.
I've had more luck asking what's in the barn or garage and usually get the "nothing" answer. I try to push for a look and then spend more on the "nothing" than I do on what was is in the house that they think is the good stuff.
Now, surely franksolich isn't the only person who finds such bad manners contemptible.
Someone has something to sell, and contacts a potential buyer. Then the potential buyer wants to nose around the rest of the house, to see if there's other stuff he can cheat the seller on.
No way.
Someone comes to this place, and tries to nose around where his nose doesn't belong, well, he's out the door.

2. Did you get the Victrola?

3. Yes and sold it the next day.
Uh oh. Addled Grandma Judy got by her guardians again.

4. was it a big horn model?
Or a cabinet?
safeinOhio (7,452 posts) Fri Apr 26, 2013, 07:37 PM
5. It was a cabinet model.
A low wide one in very nice shape. Even the 20 or 30 records that came with it very super nice. Had a beautiful stencil of the dog and the horn under the cover.
^^^probably bought low, sold high, making a windfall profit on it, just like the greedy oil and drug companies.

You are right frank, it is very rude.
I occasionally advertise stuff on craigslist. Sometimes, it is items out at my parent's house. My dad is fine with taking them around to look at whatever it is that I might have for sale.
Sometimes, he will get someone like this primitive, who is interested in all the other 'stuff' on his acreage, and starts thinking maybe they can snag a deal on other things.
My father now promptly tells them their 'tour' is over, and nothing here is for sale to them anymore, including whatever item they came to look at.

This was probably before your time, but anyway, when the flea-market and eBay primitives, notably among them addled Grandma Judy, also known as the "grasswire" primitive and the pie-and-jam primitive, discovered that 0bama's having PayPal deduct 10% of their proceeds for taxes, they got, to put it mildly, somewhat upset.
-
I think to sell on ebay now you have to pay taxes on what you sell.
-
Franksolich has this primitive pegged.
Now, surely franksolich isn't the only person who finds such bad manners contemptible.
SafeinOhio sounds like the type of character that would ask to use the bathroom before he leaves and rifle through the medicine chest "hoping to find more."
-
Now that I'm rethinking this whole buying and selling over at the DUmp, wouldn't the DUmmies just sell at cost, being they hate anyone who makes profits? Afterall, that's capitalism.
-
Rob from the poor, sell to the rich, make profit, don't pay taxes.......usual DUmmie M.O..
-

There is a bill floating around now that will require people who sell goods online to pay taxes to the state that the buyer lives in, at whatever rate the state requires. Of course, the Senate bill has a snazzy title, 'The Marketplace Fairness Act' :p

That's something different.
Paypal now requires one's social security number so that they may deduct a percentage for income taxes on every sale, and issue a form 1099 to the seller once a year.
It's part of 0bamacare, and the reselling primitives don't like it.

but...but....but DUmmies thought that they would get Obamacare for free?

Not a at all Coach, not at all.
When I was a wee lad living on a farm in the great woods mother would get a phone call on the old wall mounted hand crank from the nearest neighbor, a scant five miles away, waning of roving junk thieves. They would wander the country side carrying off anything not nailed down that they could make a quick buck off. In one instance they stole a bath tub used as a horse watering trough in the back pasture. Yup. Word was they would steal a hot stove leaving only the fire. Foxes weren't the only reason there was always a loaded gun hanging in the rack.
Years later we would have my aunt come live with us. Wonderful woman, but a bit short from birth, who brought all her worldly possessions with her along with her rock collection. One day I came home to find she is flashing a large wad of cash which is strange because, while frugal, she made a church mouse look flush, her Social Security was less than $700 per month. Seems she had found a bottle when she was a kid that she had kept all the years. A nice man had come to the door to ask if she had any antiques she wanted to part with and she sold him her bottle. (now I would not guarantee the man came to the door unsolicited but that was her claim). In any event he had asked if he could browse around to see if there was anything else he might like to make an offer on and she told him no since she wasn't the owner but to come back when I was home. I was not pleased to receive this information to say the least. He never returned

Yup - Its a new tax for state specific sales tax revenue, whereas the other one with the 1099 is taxes on earnings.
So, now an internet reseller needs to pay 'his fair share' { (TM) Obama } - AND the internet reseller will need to collect appropriate sales taxes for the buyer's home state.
Of course, this will result in a complex mess that will all but kill off serious EBay business owners - But hey, its the Democrat's plan, so its all for the greater good of the country, right ?

You know, what freaks me is that such people actually think they're nice people.
Talk about chutzpah.
Now, they'e having community-wide garage sales in this area this coming weekend, and as it's a big deal, I suppose anecdotes of that'll find their way into the current story that's continuing here, "the spring of one's discontent," and so I won't use any somesuch material here, saving it for that.
Anyway.
The worst one is the pie-and-jam primitive's, Grandma Judy's, best pal on Skins's island, the vindictive primitive, "Vinca." She's now well into senior-citizenship and suffers a great many ailments of the ancients, but one feels no sympathy for the old bitch whatsoever.
In her earlier days, say 30 or 40 years ago, the vindictive primitive worked for an abortion profiteer. She probably worked in the office or something, because she had no idea what a murdered infant looked like, until one day one was put on a plate and passed around. It was maybe two months along, or something like that.
The vindictive primitive, in one of the bitter old Vermontese cali primitive's threads enthusing about abortion, said, "Well, it didn't even look human," inferring that therefore, it wasn't.
Normally, one wishes the primitives a short and miserable life, but in this case franksolich makes an exception--I hope to God she lives another sixty years, every day being more miserable and wretched and painful than the preceding day, to where she's constantly moaning and screaming in agony and pain.
Anyway.
The vindictive primitive's creed, when it comes to used goods, is "You've got to be sharp; you've got to cheat the other guy before he cheats you."
This, from a primitive campfire from January, which was never brought over here:

What I learned as an Amazon seller in 2012 (The Year in Review Part 1)
So my first year as an almost-full time Amazon seller ended last night. As I’ve mentioned before, I’d been selling off and on for a couple of years prior. But this year I really started seeking inventory to sell as opposed to just selling items from my own collection.
1. ‘No Early Birds’ in yard sale ads is just a catchphrase. People seldom mean it. You’re not going to be turned away if you walk up a half hour early with cash in hand. Some people might be a little annoyed but if you’re there to buy, they get over it real quick.
2. The early bird gets the worm. Seriously. Don’t think the items you’re looking for will still be available if you get to a sale after it has already started. Huntress keeps learning that lesson the hard way – showing up five minutes after a sale has started and watching other people walk off with boxes of DVDs and video games.

1. Re #1 - People can also be world class jerks if you get there early.
I'm always astonished when it happens and a couple of times I've left with my pile of cash never to return. I have better luck weaseling into things like church bazaars early. Put a real innocent look on your face and tell them you could have sworn it was supposed to start at the time you arrived. LOL.
"LOL"--and the vindictive primitive has the gall to think she's a nice person.
I hope her rectal aperture seals up, and she can't discharge the contents of her intestines the rest of her life.

Newsflash fool, if what they are selling is good enough for you to try to sneak in and steal it early, they don't need your 'pile of cash' to sell it. It will end up being sold to the guy who follows the rules.
A few people tried to do the 'early' crap with my parent's neighbor down the road when he held an auction. Not only did he turn them away, but he made sure they weren't allow to register and bid on anything when the auction did start. Some of those items Battlehymn himself ended up with, at pennies on the dollar, literally.
Nothing quite beat the feeling of walking past and seeing the look on the faces of a few vinca primitive act-alikes with sets of jadeite McKee shaker sets purchased for $10.

Wait, I thought Christians were the scourge of the earth?
Anyways, they see right through your ruse too, I'm sure. They're just not as focused on temporal things as you are, and shrug it off.

Talk about chutzpah.
There was a thread I noticed where they were going on about how Atheists and Agnostics were more well healed than the rank and file Religious folks. My first thought? Sure, they have no moral code to prevent them from out and out theft. :whatever:
-
Now, one has to be a little careful here, because there are decent and civilized people who deal in used goods.
But either they have a permanent place of business, a store, or they're doing it just for the fun of it.
Freeper's wife in the first case, delilah's grandparents in the second case.
I buy used goods all the time--but either from an established thrift- or second-hand store, or from someone I know. And in those rare instances where I'm seeking an antiquity, I buy from an antique store only.
There's nothing a primitive re-seller has, at any price, that I'm willing to buy.
One can actually discern who's a primitive and who's not, in this business, by their body language.
A non-primitive just wants to move the goods, in or out.
A primitive feels he's been cheated by life, and so as to get even, tries to cheat others.

True enough as you say Coach, or, there are used car salesmen and there are peddlers of tired iron, like a fella once said.
Take a peep at this one when you get a chance:

Primitives are morally superior in an immoral way I guess.

I've worked several church rummage sales, and it appalled me how some people acted. People would walk up to the cash register table and make ridiculous offers on items. They would bring something over with a price tag saying $10 dollars, and offer to pay $2.00 for it, and then get upset when that offer wasn't accepted.

I take it then that you've already met the vindictive primitive.

I have never offered less than the asking price on something at a church rummage sale. I know where the money is going, so I have no problems paying the price. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, and maybe not even the only one here at CC.

Here is a good example of what you can expect the typical primitive to drop off as a donation to a church rummage sale:

So these DUmmies go picking, dumpster diving, yard-selling, or whatever else you're of a mind to call it. They find items for next to nothing. Then turn around and attempt to sell said item for a large profit that is essentially made through no real labor as they didn't make, create, design, produce, or oversee the production of the items in question. (For the record, if you buy something for a dime and sell it for a dollar that's a large profit.) These DUmmies meet many of the DUmps criteria for being 1%ers. I say the government should take at least 90% of whatever profit that the DUmmies make.

That was the going rate for Japanese schoolgirl panties at the time, so the Clenis figured it was "prevailing rate"*.
*Edited to change "market price" to "prevailing rate". Dems don't believe in the market.

Joe Biden did the same thing with the 2012 taxes. Donated old clothes to Goodwill and wrote it off on his taxes.
I cannot imagine haggling at a church rummage sale, or any other charitable/community organization. They're attempting to raise money! Jeez.

I've given away stuff and cash and never written it off my taxes......these democrat political assholes make a lot more than I ever did and then write off old used underwear as a charity donation......cheap bastards.

Over the past ten years, Plugs and his wife have averaged donating less than 1% to charities.
Stung by the criticism, in 2012 their donations soared to around 1.5%.

I agree with you, Frank, I would find such an annoyingly persistent buyer not only rude and irritating, but suspicious as to whether they were casing the place. My response would be along the lines of "I said no once, now clear out, I've got shit to do."
