hunger strike
Started today in front if the Hilton in Mission Valley. I need to go back later and write the first of a series of stories for blog/ op news.
Here is a stat that might blow all thinking of we are a middle class counyry.
San Diego Unified has 130,000 students. Two thirds qualify for the enhanced school lunch program. This means breakfast and lunch at school . Their parents are low wage earners. Got this from a school bosrd member
This is just to wet your appetite
Now tell me DU'ers, this is a large urban area in California. Do you see any issues?
And i might have to write for the blog two veraions of it. One in english, the other in Spanish

5. I might add, before coming home
the incoming school superintendent Cindy Marten came to talk to the parents, and chiefly the children of these parents who are at risk of losing their jobs. As she told me, "I can't personally fix it now, but we can give the children a safe environment."
What she is afraid is that children are afraid that next it will be them, and papers please... and losing school as well.
So there you have it. Me, have to go to write the story of the San Diego Nine. Take the story of the San Diego Nine (which I will post later) for what it is. This is part of the trend we are seeing of more workers striking. They feel they don't have anything to lose at this point... so in some ways... we might very well be there.
Ah the joys of having interviews in both English and Spanish...

Isn't San Diego a upper rent district?

San Diego is mostly just a suburb of Tijuana.

In San Diego, illegal mexicans have driven out most of the 0bamaites.
As a result it's one of the few big cities in America with a strong repuke party.

The Hilton Mission Valley hotel — scene of several large protests by members of the Unite Here Local 30 labor union — now faces a new threat: a planned five-day hunger strike from noon Friday to noon Tuesday. This hotel formerly belonged to a Connecticut company which the national union has battled for more than a year. That company sold the Mission Valley facility to Newport Beach-based Evolution Hospitality, part of the Tarsadia Alliance of businesses. Initially, the Connecticut company warned of layoffs by the new owner, which called the police when the union went to visit. Then, Evolution agreed to hire 110 Hilton workers, but subjected them to E-Verify programs. Employers use E-Verify to check Homeland Security records to see if workers are in the country legally. The union says nine workers who have worked at the hotel for more than a year will be fired. So union members and local supporters say they will hold the hunger strike to protest.
What that has to do with the school lunch program is beyond me.

Papers? What is she talking about? Illegal aliens?

Thanks to JakeStyle's post, I guess the "San Diego Nine" are some illegal aliens who were caught because of e-Verify and were fired from the Hilton, so the union will hold a hunger strike.
Nads, Girl Reporter plans to write a series of blog posts for the San Diego Penny Saver.
Or something.
