Tarantula The Size Of A Human Face Discovered
1:51pm UK, Thursday 04 April 2013
Scientists have found an enormous, previously unknown, species of venomous spider in a remote Sri Lankan village.

The giant tarantula is as big as a human face.
Its legs, which have unique daffodil-yellow markings, span a massive 20cm (eight inches). The arachnid also has a distinctive pink band around its body.
The new species was found in the war-torn north of the South Asian country by scientists from Sri Lanka's Biodiversity Education and Research (BER) organisation.
It has been named Poecilotheria rajaei, in recognition of a senior police officer called Michael Rajakumar Purajah, who guided the research team through a hazardous jungle overrun by civil unrest in order to seek out the spider.
The spider is said to prefer living on old trees
The arachnid had originally been presented to BER three years ago by villagers in Mankulam, who had killed a male specimen.
Scientists immediately realised the dead spider was not like anything they already knew and a group was charged with finding any living relatives.
The living Poecilotheria rajaei were eventually discovered in the former doctor's quarters of the village's hospital.
According to wired.com, Ranil Nanayakkara, the co-founder of BER, said: "They are quite rare.
Check out the photos. Found in a doctor's quarters? Geez Louise! :panic:

I'm not even going to look! The tarantulas we have here are bad enough. I hate spiders.

Big as a human face? What an odd size comparison.
Whose human face? Rosie O'Donnell's or Jane Adams'?

As a kid in Arizona, I remember throwing stones at a tarantula. It turned around and chased me!
I have never run so fast...

A tarantula made you his bitch?

Awww...I was hoping that by saying "its as big as a human face" they had actually put it on some guy's face to prove the comparision :-)

When I was a kid in Tucson, we'd find a tarantula hole and put both black ants and red ants down it. None of them knew who they should kill!

They know this because the guy who discovered it was summoned by a piercing scream one morning and said, "Whoa! Gary! That thing fits over your entire face!"

What....that spider aint so big....it doesn't even have a health bar like this one...

That's some funny stuff right there, I don't care who you are.

Tarantulas like many desert critters seek out warmth at night.
I was on an FTX at FT. Hunter Liggett once.
I woke up with about 3 of them curled up sleeping on my chest.
Not the best way to wake up.

Hell no. I didn't want to get bit. I gently removed them and tossed them lightly to the side.

We only have these tiny deadly spiders in Florida.
-
We don't have spiders that huge here. However, by the time that Fall comes around, some of the Wolf Spiders can be like small tarantulas about 4-5 inches leg span.
Our small spiders are the ones to worry about--the brown recluse and black widow.

Is that the Brown Recluse?

One of them.

One of them.
As I suspected. My aunt and uncle had to move from St. Louis back in the 1970s because their house was loaded with them. All of their belongings were minutely inspected upon their arrival in Illinois (near Chicago).

I've been bitten by them. I didn't have the large areas of flesh ulcerations (that only occurs in a small %). I did go through a 24 hour period of reaction to the venom thatfelt like I have the flu and fever but I didn't really run a high temperature. I was told that was my body fighting the venom.

It's a very striking animal, from the pictures. Far, far away pictures.

Am I the only one reminded of our recent lost member when the subject of large spiders comes up?

I got bit by something and was out of it for three days with a high fever. My face was so swollen I couldn't open my eyes. Then after the symptoms went away, my face peeled like I had gotten a bad sunburn. Never found a bite area. The Dr. didn't even know what it was.
