Obama To Return 5 Percent Of His Salary In Solidarity With Furloughed Federal Workers
By JOSH LEDERMAN 04/03/13 03:10 PM ET EDT AP
WASHINGTON -- The White House says President Barack Obama will return 5 percent of his salary to the Treasury in light of automatic spending cuts that have led to furloughs for thousands of federal workers.
A White House official says Obama decided to return part of his salary each month for the rest of the year to share in the sacrifice that government employees are making. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the decision publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The president makes $400,000 per year. A 5 percent pay cut amounts to a little less than 1,700 per month.
The decision is retroactive to the beginning of March. That's when $85 billion in federal spending cuts kicked in after lawmakers failed to agree on a plan to undo them.

In Act of Solidarity, Top Pentagon Officials Will Return a Share of Salaries

By taking a voluntary cut in his own pay — no matter the size or amount — President Obama is forcing the sequester back into the news and back to the top of peoples’ minds, at least for a day or two.
And, what he is clearly hoping is that other Administration figures and other elected officials take his cue to forego some salary and, in so doing, keep the story in the news — ratcheting up the pressure on those (mostly Republicans) who are just fine with keeping the sequester in place.
That’s already happening — with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Alaska Democratic Sen. Mark Begich announcing they will take a voluntary five percent pay cut as well. Expect lots more Democrats — and likely some Republicans — to follow suit in the coming days.
Will Obama’s sequester strategy work? It depends on how you define “workâ€. It will almost certainly re-direct attention to the sequester, which, in and of itself, is a victory of sorts for the Administration. Whether or not it actually moves Congress and the White House to action to avert some of the sequester’s nastier consequences remains to be seen.

2. That'll give some cud to the RW to chew on for a while.
I'm not sure what it would be, but I'm sure there is a bad side to that gesture. Grandstanding?
Give them a day and they'll have a list longer than a flagpole rope on why he shouldn't have done this or what he was trying to gain by doing so. The poor guy can't win.
GFY, Obama!!!!
Tell you what DUmmy when he cuts back on the parties and the vacations then maybe he will get some kudos. This silly stunt doesn't mean a damn thing. He is still spending our money like a drunken sailor.

3. Can't imagine Romney doing this as president.
I can't either, since he didn't collect a salary as governor, and he did promise if he had won the presidency he would have donated the whole salary to charity.
So you are right Romney wouldn't hand over just 5%.

5. Brilliant move - puts the ball back in Boehner's court.
The Republicans are no match for Obama.
Sadly that is true the republicans are no match for 0bama because they are scared to death of the media.
The DUmmies act like his giving 5% is a huge act of charity when the reality is, it he won't miss it.

You DUmbasses will be smiling when the showers turn on.
He spent more then that today jet setting around the country while you useful idiots worship at the edge of his prayer rug.

5% eh? While the days have been reduced it hasn't even been by 50% so fed workers still face about 10%(or more) off of their pay and they can far less afford that hit. Plus, I doubt the taxpayers will be funding their vacations aside from pay like he and his family's trips are. Many will be struggling to pay for 'part time' daycare. the only saving grace for some of these families is if they telecommute enough, they can do it more and keep (older) children at home and out of summer camp and try and absorb some of that cost. For those who can afford the hit whether they are dual income or have saved, it will make a nice family day I guess during a time of year when arrangements are dififcult to make for some families with kids out of school.
I'm sorry, but there is no 'cud' for this 'RWer'. I can see through what he is and this doesn't make me eat crow at all. Plus, I know enough people effected that this is hollow bs. chew on that a while dipshits.

Now forced, mind you forced to purchase common arugula.

I saw something the other day that said he had cost more in vacations in 4 years than Bush did in 8 years. I don't know the truth of it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

100% till he follows the Constitution, and actually submits a budget.

Big wop. It's all about perceptions. This guy is nothing but a political whore. He has no integrity.

In the long run we may be better off if we offer to double his salary IF he and his entire administration agree to spend the next four years at a tropical beach resort without phones or computers.

Federal workers during sequestration will be cut to a 4 day work week. That's a 20% cut in pay. That math is real.

That's a sad thought but it is true.

Cancer clinics are turning away thousands of Medicare patients. Blame the sequester.

Oncologists were cut 2% on chemo drugs. They will now only get 4% over cost for ordering, maintaining and administering the drugs which they say will cost them a lot of money.

Called damage control.

Exactly. That's the cut my son will take. He wishes he could just lose 5%.

Well, yes, but the jug-eared muslim already takes one week-long vacation per month, and that's 25%.
Now he's taking a 5% pay cut. By democrat math, that's 5% plus 25%, or a 30% sacrifice he's making.
What more do you expect of the guy?
-
Meanwhile he has paid lodging, food, transportation, security, and all the amenities of a busload of rock stars. Whoopty-shit, what a sacrifice.
How does this help the furloughed employees?
-
He is just a pompous ass and he is such a joke

I thought the same thing. Solidarity, my a**. I will be taking a 20% cut in pay if the furloughs materialize.

What?! Chuck, that's awesome. I'm way more impressed with that, than king zero's 5%.

Thanks. I'm not so sure I'd consider it awesome, but I do kind of like how it turned out. I think the reduced size makes it look a bit better because it hides mistakes.
If I get time after lunch I'll post a larger version in the Lounge.

Much to doo about nothing.
Why does he need a paycheck anyway.....he's getting free room and board and a lot of other government freebies.

That's my thoughts.
What really pisses my wife off is to get her talking about how we have to pay to redecorate every time a new administration is elected. Her thoughts are that we're already giving them a place to stay and feeding them. Why do we also have to provide for their choice of decor?

With Reagan and both Bushes, all the new White House decorations were paid for by friends of the President.
Of course, Reagan and both Bushes were native-born Americans.

Geez--artists are their own worst critics. (My wife majored in Art History.)

How about Obama and all the politicians take no pay for a year.
-
Ill take notice when Obama dumps 5% of his gross earnings, not just his presidential salary. Ill be even more impressed if he gives up what he believes the rest of the '1%ers' should give up.
Until then - this is simply another Photo-op.
-
All the people on furloughs are losing 20% of their pay. And he thinks he's being generous giving up 5% of his? And it is only 5% of his Presidential income. Big woo.

Obama To Return 5 Percent Of His Salary In Solidarity With Furloughed Federal Workers
Well, that was mighty white of him to take a $20K/year pay cut.
Barry wipes his ass with more than that in a week.
