Why aren't more people posting?
I've noticed it since the advent of DU-3. We used to have something like 1+ pages per hour and now you can read overnight postings on less than two pages.
Is it because * and Cheney are gone? Are we getting apathetic? Are the stories gone?
I miss the flurry of all the posts and being worried I wouldn't have time to read all of them.

1. I think it's a combination of many things. But I can't say I know for sure.

One thing we do know is that we have seen a fairly consistent decline in number of posts over time since Obama became president. In hindsight that is not surprising -- I think DU became much less fun for many people when we found ourselves arguing over President Obama rather than sharing our disgust with President Bush. I know that is true for me sometimes -- reading over and over again over these last four years that I am a despicable human being because I support President Obama can get pretty tiresome.
The switch to DU3 was a big change, and we did take something of a hit when we did it. But the number of posts has been pretty consistent since then (not counting a significant spike around election time last year). One issue, I think, is that changing to the jury system has caused people to be hyper-focused on the way the site is run, and this has taken a toll on perceptions. Back on DU2 people could come and participate and not think about how the "sausage" was made. But on DU3 we no longer have any secrets about how we run the site, and I think it has given some people the impression that DU3 is less civil than DU2. I think that impression was true to the extent that many jurors were deliberately voting to allow incivility in the Meta-discussion forum, but I believe it was not true on the rest of the site. Now that Meta is gone I think DU3 is more civil than DU2, and furthermore I think it is much more capable of handling very robust discussions on very contentious issues.
I also think that the media landscape is very different these days, and the competition is much more fierce. We used to have a virtual monopoly on our members' online time. I'd be willing to bet that Facebook alone is could account for most of the decrease in time and posting that our members do here. Throw in Twitter and BuzzFeed and all the liberal blogs and cat-related websites and everything else, and you see what we're up against.

2. Thank you. Your well presented explanation satisfied my curiosity.

3. I am very glad to hear that.

I also love DU more than I ever have.
I was not always able to say that. During the last couple years of DU2 I did not love it -- in fact, it made me quite unhappy fairly often.

Good find, sir.
But a rather weak "explanation" on my fellow alum's part.

I have no idea if skins ever visits here nor do I care but in case you do Davey let me clue you in on what your problem is.
When you divide people into groups based on what special privilege they feel they should get it is inevitable that no one will be happy as you entitled dimwits all think the only person who should matter is you.
Your festering pit of hate is a snapshot of what liberalism is.

:rotf: Yeah...the fact that some posters voted in meta to leave good, decent (according to civilized people) posts alone was what made DU less civil than your old, stupid home... :whatever:

The switch to DU3 was a big change, and we did take something of a hit when we did it.
That was when the new DUmp started up with swarms of flashing animated ads, and Skimmer told the DUmpmonkeys it would cost them $42 a year to turn the ads off.
DUmmies deserted in droves until Skimmer panicked, took down the $42 charge, and changed the price of a star to anything greater than zero.
The DUmbasses who had already paid $42 just got hosed.
It was a beautiful thing.
Now, with a reduced herd of DUmmies, it's impossible for Skimmer to purge the militant lesbos and whining queers who have taken the place over.
He can't afford to lose the members. In the days of the old DUmp, there would have been a night of the long knives unlike any other.

I doubt he ever visits here, he hardly ever looks at DU and he owns the place.

Aging DUmmtards dying off, or becoming even more senile than they already were and so having trouble remembering how to log on and type.

What kind of vacation will the Skinner family have this year? 1/2 day road trip if lucky maybe?
-
Maybe DU should stop banning too many people. :mental: An echo chamber cannot last forever.

Skimmer should appreciate us moles more. We account for more posts that the moonbats do.

And probably account for more cash flow in (indirectly), too. O-)
