Oh my.
For a second there, I thought I'd time-warped back into the 1960s.

So what can we do? One thing is to join or start a local cooperative.
We can affect the economy. Buy less and buy local. Move your money to local banks or Credit Unions that invest in local business. Support farmer's markets and local coops. Coops can make a difference.
A great article in “yes!†magazine by Sven Eberlein
“6 Ways to Fuel the Cooperative Takeover - From now on, the global mantra for filling market gaps is going to be, “There’s a co-op for that.†“

We can make a difference.

1. I really, really, really like the cooperative idea and I think I could organize one as I have run businesses before in a capacity as a manager, but I wouldn't know where to start. I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm in my seventies and wouldn't be able to pull my weight, but I could set up an office the bookkeeping and all. But where do you get the seed money and how do you get people involved to become owner/operators? I don't think a bank would be interested in lending money for such an enterprise.
Where I live, which is both a tourist destination for the beach and ocean attractions, as well as a wine country and agricultural area, doesn't have a base for retail businesses because they have been swallowed up by the big box stores.
Our real needs are to help our poor, but this wouldn't really make a paying business.
Maybe buying and running one of the many hotels here could be profitable, but I don't know anything about the hospitality business.
<<<knows a lot about the hospitality business, but doesn't like being in it.

2. I am trying to get something going in New Orleans...
Seems some big buildings are there and pretty reasonable. Commune style. I've got a lot of people in some groups that travel to NOLA all the time and would be into this. Huge thread here:
http://chat.nojazzfest.com/showthread.php?13954-Whaddabout-a-Threadhead-Commune
Do a gallery, a small brewery, some charity, a makers space, and whatever skills you can ring.
Okay, now at first I figured the benzadrineboy primitive was trying to pull a fast one. In his suicide thread, he mentioned he was from around Sacramento, California. And here it seems he's alleging to be from around New Orleans, Louisiana.
Upon closer inspection, it appears he knows some people in Sacramento who've been down to New Orleans for a few days or something.

4. Sounds really great. Best of luck.
The more people who form these and take business from the corporations, the better because then more people will want to be involved with and work for cooperatives.

5. I recommend the article I linked to in the OP. This months "yes!" mag is featuring coop stories.

3. K&R....! We are TRYING...and the more we
become independent from this Shit we are Living through...Lies, Deception, Twisted Rhetoric ....then the better off we are...
But..we aren't THERE YET...doesn't mean that putting energy into something FOR US...isn't better than beating our guts out on the internets about Politicians who could care less about ANY of US.

6. I think we need to change our mind-sets. Most of us were raised to think material items were important. Boat, two cars, big house, etc. And as long as the economy kept growing that was fine. But it was really just a bubble. A big bubble and now it's broken and we need to reevaluate what's important to us. Really important.

They are too funny
I think I could organize one as I have run businesses before in a capacity as a manager, but I wouldn't know where to start.
Go for it - you think you could organize one but don't know where to start. Sounds like a winning combo there.
Our real needs are to help our poor, but this wouldn't really make a paying business.
Get the ones off the street with the signs that read; "Will work for food"
more people will want to be involved with and work for cooperatives.
sure they will (cough, cough)

I'm all for a DUmmie coop. Except for we would have to feed and clean up after them and they would produce nothing of value. So, on second thought, I'm all against a DUmmie coop.

I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm in my seventies and wouldn't be able to pull my weight
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm diabetic.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I have Asperger's.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm on hypertension pills.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm overweight.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm underweight.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I develop a rash when I touch hand tools.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm not good with my hands.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm on disability.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm waiting to get on disability.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm hypoglycemic.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm not able to lift over 5 pounds.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I am not a people person.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I have gout.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I have a heart condition.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I have Morgellon's Syndrome.
I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I bite my nails.
Did I miss any?

^^^another note on my list above:
Both of my aunts joined various communes through the sixties, all up and down the west coast. I never talked to them about it, but they would tell other people their stories. I would later ask questions of those people, to find out what it was like.
At the communes they were on, it seems most people were always good at something, and yet sadly, it was always nothing that was actually useful to the community as a whole. The women were also expected to do almost everything in every commune they visited.

So DUmmy Cleita wants someone to start a co-op so she can claim disability from it.
The enormous, worthless, diabetic DUmmy Bennyboy is on his sixth day of a suicide fast, but wants to start some kind of co-op in an undefined business.
Maybe he could start a bathroom tiling co-op.
Sounds like a winner.
When I hear "co-op", unless it's a group of farmers, I just hear "winos".
-
I like apples and pears from Washington state, grapes from California, oranges from Florida and Bananas from central America....I guess I'll be stuck with watermelons and turnips from the local coop.
-
Cleita
But where do you get the seed money...
I hear CalPig has the market cornered on "aching seed."
:puke:
.

Can you imagine what a coop run by DUmmies would be like?
It would be like OWS on steroids.
They would need rape free zones, they would be drowning in their own sewage within a week.
I'm all for it if we can get enough DUmmies in the coop just think how many democrat voters will no longer be with us.

Our real needs are to help our poor, but this wouldn't really make a paying business.
Alas, a small spark, to be quickly extinguished by the stupid. They are simply incapable of projecting that into the larger world.

My neighbor did the commune thing. Long story short, for various specifics they always fail, but the common thread is simply hypocrisy and lack of incentive. And......
The women were also expected to do almost everything in every commune they visited.
Imagine that. He mentioned the same thing.
And these are the people that presume to lecture everyone else...... :whatever:

consultant than owner/worker because I'm in my seventies and wouldn't be able to pull my weight
Therein lies your problem, everyone over there who would be interested in it wants to be a 'consultant'. Not enough people are going to want to do the grunt work in that crowd since all would claim some disability or another that prevents them from contributing in any meaningful way other then being a consumer of said labors.

 Yep, that was my point too. Who is actually going to claim being 'able-bodied' and do the, oh I don't know, WORK to make this thing doable? :lmao:

When the pilgrims tried it, it didn't work for those same reasons. Too many not pulling their weight.

By the standards of the day, even those that didn't fully pull their weight were still doing more than the hippies in their communes.
