A kid that has done some work for me slugged another fellow and got arrested.
Regardless of the who's and how's of the whole thing, I get a call from the kid. It's collect on my cell. The recording says to punch in my card number, but when I do, the recording says it doesn't recognize it. The first time I jokingly think "Well of course not, I've never used it for this before." By the third time I'm thinking, "You should! It's the same one I've tried before and everyone else in the world takes it!"
I called the jail and the clerk, sounding very uninterested, tells me it's easy and no one else has had trouble. I asked around and I guess I'm the only person in my circle of acquaintances to get a call from jail. No one knows.
I'll be in town next week and plan on stopping by, but thought maybe somebody here knows the trick. Or maybe none of you have received a call from jail either!

Don't take collect calls from jails. You'll find about a $30 charge for it on your bill.

The only possible insight I have to offer is that most places that take credit cards use a third party to verify the card and available balance.
Sometimes these third parties are either down or having enough problems that it causes them to deny.

The $30 would not bother me if someone needed my help or just someone to talk to for a minute. Especially in that situation. Collect calls from jails are expensive as the jail usually gets a kickback.

A $30 hit for a call would make my eyes pop, but as long as it wasn't a daily thing, I'd be okay with it. Wouldn't mind the Sheriff's Dept. getting a cut of it, either. Think I'm going to hunt down some of this kid's family and make sure they know.

Sounds like a good idea. Jail can be a scary place if you can't get a hold of anyone.
