My desktop computer is fried. Both the hard disk and it's controller are shot.
What brand and type of desktop computer does anyone recommend?

Is this the one that Thor built for you?

The thing I absolutely hate about buying a computer from Dell or HP or Gateway or whoever, is all that bullshit software they load on the damned thing.
And Windows 8 sucks donkey balls.

We have three Dell desktops, a Gateway Desktop , a Toshiba laptop and a Dell laptop. I will never buy another Gateway.
I've learned the best thing to do after buying a brand name is to do a reformat and reinstall of the OS and don't install all the BS software.

This is already a pain in the balls.
Any opinions on a Mac? My daughter & her family each have one and swear by them. They also have Windows loaded and run DOS programs.

My daughter loves her mac. What is it that you do with your computer? A mac might work for you.

I like Dell. Whatever you do, DO NOT get an E Machine from Walmart!!

I've never owned a Mac but they used to be too proprietary for my liking. You couldn't by new hardware off the shelf to upgrade them like PCs . I don't know if that is still true or not.

That wasn't even in my thoughts. SH.

A Mac is off my list.

For laptops, Toshiba. The Satellite L-series is a nice medium between "hair-on-fire sticker shock" and "meh, let the five-year-old play with it."
For desktops, HP Pavilions.
For retailer, Office Depot. For an extra charge they'll strip that excess software out of there, burn you some recovery discs, and make sure laptop batteries are correctly charged the first time.

Todhiba will be the one. Fot my next lapotp.
You really like the HP Pavillion?
My grandson will call me tonight with his recomendations. He builds computers for people, but I don't have the time for that. He's one of the top 25 salesmen for Best Buy in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin. I'm confident he'd be able to scrub all the shit out of it too. We'll see - I have a lot of information on the old one, no good for the 'Net but OK to get my files. So I should be OK with retrieving those.
-
Yes.
Chris can speak to this much better than I can, but I've seen over and over and over again hard drives that just plain flat die.
They don't build 'em like they used to.

Anyone here use a MAC, or familiar with one's operation?
-
I have been thinking of a Mac except there is no point never get the chance on the computer anyway
-
I think I'll have my grandson take the MAC and get an HP tower.
-
Well, I'm beginning to learn my way around the MAC. Grandson will come down again soon to set it up as a Windows 7 machine, in addition to MAC. He's the #4 salesman for Best Buy in the region of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, and he has people coming with Windows 8 machines tearing their hair out and returning them because the Windows 8 sucks so bad, even after he warns them about the "new" version of Windoze.
Incredible. The computer is about 7.75" square and 1.375" high, with a 1TB hard disk and 8M of RAM, 4 USB slots that I expanded to 11 with a plug-in USB device, and a card reader.
Steep learning curve around here; almost vertical. New MAC to replace the previous Windows machine, and a new Apple IPhone too 4S. :panic:
