Interesting man. I'm not Catholic, so not sure about all the different divisions, but they say he's a Jesuit. ?? He doesn't live in the Cardinal's home and takes the bus to work.
-
He's also been vocal about his objection to capitalism blaming it in 2001 for the plight of the Argentina people's. FYI:(

Pope Francis beat out a much younger man, Itally's Cardinal Sicola. Sicola was a cool guy, he got along well with the yutes. He was described as a breath of fresh air. and a good speaker.
So we almost had a cool, refreshing Pope Sicola.

He stated that the legalisation of gay-marriage in Argentina was the work of the 'Father of lies' - I think that the liberals are going to hate the new Holy Father.

Well of course. That was my point:) the economic position will never overshadow his conservative views on those other issues for them. That's not a bad thing in my eyes.

Did Venezuela's Chavez nudge Christ to pick South American pope?
CARACAS (Reuters) - Late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez's influence may have stretched into the afterlife and had a hand in Christ's decision to opt for a Latin American Pope, acting President Nicolas Maduro said on Wednesday.
"We know that our commander ascended to the heights and is face-to-face with Christ," Maduro said at a Caracas book fair. "Something influenced the choice of a South American pope, someone new arrived at Christ's side and said to him: 'Well, it seems to us South America's time has come.'"
Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years.

He chose to live an austere life. He wouldn't live in the mansion or use the car provided for their Cardinal. He lived in a small apartment, used the bus, and he cooked his own meals, according to news reports.

Yes I'm aware.
He's also on record saying that capitalism caused the woes of the people in Argentina.

And how long ago was that, again? It would seem to me that, from this article below, that he's not entirely thrilled with the current socialist government in Argentina.

According to the article above, on the third page, he blamed unrestrained capitalism for Argentina's woes--not the entirety of capitalism. Not quite the same thing.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the following statement Wednesday:
"On behalf of the leadership and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we extend our warmest wishes to His Holiness Pope Francis I and pray he will feel the peace of the Lord as he serves as pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.
"We have been honored and pleased as our two faiths have worked together on issues of faith, morality and service to the poor and needy. We value the relationships that have been formed in these joint efforts and are grateful for the good that has been accomplished.
"We look forward to pursuing together, as the Apostle Paul wrote, all things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report (see Philippians 4:8)."

This article gives a look at Argentina's "crony capitalism";
As the U.S. gears up for an important presidential election, Argentina is a sad reminder of how government takeovers and crony capitalism are the enemy of genuine development.

Sounds a lot like where America is heading.

I work with and for priests who have taken vows of poverty. Almost to a man, they're amazing human beings, and they're all pillars of the Catholic faith. But they're not the guys to be talking Hobbsian economics with. They have eschewed the quest for profits. We good-naturedly go back and forth over economics. They remind me that the bible says "the love of money is the root of all evil." I ask them how much a gallon of milk costs at the supermarket, or how much their cable bill is every month, or car payments, etc, all of which are paid for by the order.
We call it a draw.

Juan and Evita Peron. They helped many Nazis and Nazis collaborators escape to Argentina. Argentina was one of the world's largest economy until Peron came along.
