It's kinda hard to argue with that logic when you're sitting in a college lecture hall spewing numbers that somebody else wrote.
The disturbing thing about that diatribe was that our culture has changed. Even declined, I'd say. And the last part of his spewage is accurate from the standpoint that we've lost some of what we've had.
We've been emasculated by faggotry that's become acceptable, by having babies outside of wedlock that's become du jour rather than the exception, by looking to the ****ing government for our next handout.
Many of us -- not all, but many -- are incensed at the idea of taking care of oneself. Doomsday preppers are laughed at and portrayed as dumbass bumpkins, while those who are laughing are ill-prepared for the most mundane emergency.
The concept of working hard for one's wages is vilified in exchange for the expectation that many have that the corporations -- as evil and twisted as they are -- exist solely for themselves. (As if those investors who are putting money where their mouths and taking the risks that the hourly-paid employee with all of 3 months on the job couldn't even fathom should actually consider those employees beyond the normal human consideration.)
We are risk-averse. We are afraid of getting hurt, afraid and intolerant of injury, illness or death in pursuit of that goal or that ambition that results in vast advances in science, industry, and technology. As a result, we shut down and watch while others who are more ambitious and more intolerant of their own condition take those risks and leap forward, passing us by.
Wars are no longer allowed to be fought in which we lose people. We are expected to fight "clean" wars in which only the bad guy gets dusted -- and this from a very safe distance. Politicians, the media, and ultimately the people lose the faith because there is no such thing as a "clean" war.
It's hard to criticize Jeff Daniels, the actor, for the words that somebody else wrote.
Much of my own optimism was lost -- I hope not permanently, but who knows -- when that ****ing criminal in my White House was reelected.

GMTA, Euph. H5!

Well said Euph! H5!

We may not be as great as we were 5 or 10 years ago but we are still the greatest IMO. I can not think of another country that I would rather live in, and being retired I have the means to do so if I wished.

Great post Eupher :hi5:

All we have to do to be the greatest nation ever once again is to deport all the illegal aliens and liberals. Liberals first because they won't and don't work.

No it's not. Because he wouldn't spew them if he didn't believe them. Aside from that, you're spot on. ^5.

So true.

He may very well be a moonbat -- most in Hollyweird are. But I don't know that and I don't really care if he is.
What I do know is that he's an actor. An accomplished actor. And as an actor, he's paid to convincingly say things that somebody else wrote and to adopt demeanor and body language that supports those words.
So on that basis, I'm not criticizing his acting performance vis a vis the words he's uttered during that scene, simply because it isn't real. It's a manifestation of what somebody else - the director, the scriptwriter, the producer - dreamed up.
He may or may not have had some input to that scene -- again, I don't know and I don't care.
In fact, I thought his performance as an actor in this scene was excellent. It caught my attention and held it. Even pissed me off enough to comment.

It's Aaron Sorokin's work. And if you think there's any room in his cold, black, liberal heart to give conservatives even one shred of credit, well...
He knows, and at least on some levels, he agrees with Sorokin.

Same here. I have not watched or listend to more than two minutes of politicial commentary at a time since Obama was elected. I get too pissed off listening to RINO's like McCain, Romney, Graham, etc. Even Congressional conservatives nauseate me cause they are too damn stupid to realize the Democrats and Obummer are playing them for fools. It has taken most of them 4 1/2 years to figure this out. Slow learners for damn sure.

Great post Euph...
Not much I can add.
I do think, which you said in so many words, that the lack of personal responsibility has cost, is costing, and will continue to cost this country dearly.
The government has taking away personal responsibility it nearly all aspects of our lives. Like you said risk-averse. The liberals don't even want the stock market to be a risk, having children out of wedlock, jobs, nothing. They think there should be no risk, therefore minimizing any personal responsibility.

Thanks for posting that link. I had no idea what the TV show was about or who was doing and saying what, so now I'm better informed.
Speaking of being informed, at the link, I definitely don't have an argument with Daniels' premise. We call 'em "low information voters" as well. Between hauling the kids to school, taking 'em to soccer practice, dance lessons, and band concerts, it's hard to stay informed on the issues when people are busy texting 1,500 times per day, posting what they ate for breakfast on Facebook, and wondering how they're going to make their next car payment because the orthodontist bill has come due.
I'd say it's a safe bet that Daniels is a lib, though I've not found anything on the web that confirms that. Certainly his character on that show is a liberal and within that character, Daniels is going to play the part -- every inch.
By the way, I don't watch prime time television.
At all.

I disagree. I do all of the above plus some. It is not hard to listen to some talk radio while driving around, reading some news sources while posting on Facebook, not to mention the ease of access of all info via smartphones while sitting at dance lessons. IMO, it is easier than ever to stay informed.
Likewise, I guess it is just as easy to stay misinformed. So then it is upon us to do some research.

Well, it does boil down to a choice. I think you're the exception rather than the rule. You choose to stay informed. The low info voter is too busy with other stuff.

Or... They get their info from very left biased sources.

And many of 'em don't even know it.
Diane Sawyer's very plaintive "I care" look masks a helluva lot of bias.

We, as a society, have lost our toughness, our thirst for doing better, our thirst for making it no matter what. In short, we have lost our American mojo. I blame welfare. Why? Because there is nothing better than being dirt poor and hungry to make your ass wanna work hard and succeed.
This is from one of our local papers. Good read.

The lady is spot on. People will finally miss -- keenly -- only that which they don't have. Education works that way and when you coddle a kid to the point that you even have to teach the kid at home because he failed to understand the consequences of bringing a weapon (knife) to school, well, we're setting up the entitlement mentality ourselves. Or, rather, the courts are.

Very true. Some simply choose to stay misinformed and bitch when things don't work out.
