Title: Minimum wage?
Post by: CG6468 on March 06, 2013, 10:56:13 AM
How much did you make in your first job?

In 1957 (before most of you were born) I was hired as an usher at a local theater, and I was paid $0.85/hour.

First job in my chosen profession: I was draftsman with a security clearance, fresh out of high school for $3.65 an hour (in 1989).  I was not unhappy with the bargain.

Holy cow.

My first job was at the amusement park that is no longer here.  I was paid minimum wage, $3.80 an hour.  That job was also the only time I've ever earned the minimum wage, and I did it for two summers in high school.

My first "official" (another word for legal) job was as a soda jerk at an old fashion Soda shop. I made $2.42 and hour which was the minimum wage to pay to students at the time.

My first job paid a lot more but I got tired of adverse benefits.

On my 17th Birthday when I joined the Army I got a huge pay raise to $4.25 an hour or &738.00 a month/ $8856 a year. No lie my very first check was $1.17. It gave me a complete belief in the Army Cadence they give you $100 and take back $99.

Mid-late 80's, I worked at a couple of department stores.  I think minimum wage was still $3.35, and I made at least a dollar over that.  But I was in high school & then college, just making spending money, not living off of it.  Never expected to stay at that level, and never did once I earned a college degree.

The that $0.85/hour, I could have all the popcorn I could eat, too!

Plus two free passes, which my parents appraciated.

13-14 years old, busboy/dishwasher in a Mexican restaurant.

$1.50/hour (LESS than 1980 minimum wage, BTW.) and one meal per shift.

Oh, and I had to bike to/from work.

I had to go back and look at the Minimum wage rates.

I think it was 4.25 per and hour as a bag boy at Jitney Jungle in Jackson MS.

Of course I had been mowing lawns and raking leaves since I was about 8 years old when my parents told me if I wanted anything nicer than what they bought me I had to work for it.  So I worked for it.  I know interesting concept to the youth now.

$2 an hour in 1970.  Had about three jobs that year - farm labor, short stint at a pizza place that was opening which was mainly renovation (Kind of a bait and switch thing on me), and then painting and renovation work on another guy's house and farm.  All of it paid about the same.

1972 - Grocery store bagging groceries, fetching carts from the parking lot, and stocking shelves.

I don't remember the exact figure, but it was part time and it wasn't much.

The next summer I got a great gig as a copyboy for the Detroit News. Made about $130 a week, most of which went to buy a car and pay for car insurance.

I started the job I am still at in 1977 for $3.84 an hour. After all those years I'm at $25, I have full health care, 4 weeks vacation, 12 personal days and the company has provided $130,000 in a savings account. Not great but it provided a fair life for me. Stick to it dummies!

Moved from Fl to Texas and found out the going rate for babysitting was 1.25 per hour, so I marketed myself at 1.00 and got all the neighborhood business.  :naughty:

My first tax-reportable job was working at Showbiz Pizza Place for 3.35 per hour, plus free pizza and sometimes free beer.  :whatever:

Am I the only one that remembers when Pizza Hut served beer?  At least the one in the neighborhood I grew up in did.

They don't sell beer in the restaurants of Pizza Hut anymore? ???

I haven't set foot in one for years, so I wouldn't know.

Nope, I remember also.

The Pizza place I worked at in MS which is a chain also.  Mazzio's served beer when I worked there, not sure if they still do.  We used to have to be in at 6:00 AM to make all the pizza's for the buffet.  Needless to say I was a little tipsy buy opening time at 11:00 on some days.  :-)

I loved good ol' Showbiz Pizza Place as a kid & teen.  My folks & their friends/other parents could drink beer while the "kids" ran around playing the now classic video games. 8)

I got one for you... John Madden's all-you-can-eat BBQ rib night at Quincys.

I can't even find it on YouTube.

Some of the Pizza Hut stores out west here still do (serve beer and wine).

I cut people's grass for $2 until I turned 16 and McDonalds would hire me. I started off at $3.35 and got promoted to night maintenance after I graduated HS and made a whopping $5. Then I joined the Army and made like a dollar an hour.

At age 12, dad hired me out to another farmer to drive a tractor for 65 cent per hour. Then at 18 I got a minimum wage job in the Bleachery at $1.25 an hour. Worked 48 hours per week and drew a $54.45 paycheck.

I was working second shift, 4 to 12....I owned a farm tractor and a small dozer at the time and could on some days make that much in one morning before going to work in the afternoon. For a tightwad 18 year old, I was rich way back then. :-)

My first real job was doing refit work in a shipyard for a couple of idle months after high-school and before college. Paid $20 / hour before tax and by god I earned every cent.

Funnily enough, I had a minimum wage job in retail support/administration nearly a decade later that paid $16/hr. Much less demanding , hot and dirty.

I worked at a PH in Lakewood, CO my senior year in HS.  It served beer.  In fact, IIRC the one outside NTC in Waukegan did right after I got out of boot.  But by the late 80's pretty much all of them stopped, IIRC.

Most pizza huts here are take out and delivery only. A full service PH is as rare as a DUmmy with a job.

Neither PH nor Domino's deliver to our house, but the local pizza/sandwich joint, which is further away than both, does deliver.  Go figure.

They should use drones to deliver your pizza.

I stopped eating Pizza Hut after college for quite a while.  We had one on campus that we could use our student meal card for, kinda got burned out on it.

There are several free standing Pizza Hut locations here that have dining rooms.  Just haven't been inside them.  I imagine if they do serve beer, it is expensive as compared to bars in the area.

People around here have guns, and know how to use them.

Very first job?  $.05/bail.  We hauled on average 2,000 bails a day 6 days a week.  $100/day was great money but it was only for a few months each year.

At 15 I went to work in a manufacturing plant making denim pants.  I was a presser.  Minimum wage was $3.35 but we were paid piece work and if you were making minimum wage for very long you were fired.  I worked from 9:00pm to 5:00 am, got home and took a shower then went to school.  I was out of school by 2:00pm and went home to sleep all I could get in before work.
