Title: A post on DU about a friend killed in Afghanistan
Post by: midwest irish on February 23, 2013, 03:32:49 PM
* There was recently a thread about a DU member who lost a friend in Afghanistan. That thread was discussed on this board. I posted the message below on the thread. But I was saddened that the death of my friend was regarded as a lie. So I'm posting this as an original thread so everyone sees it and to set the record straight in honor of my friend. Take care, all*

I came across this post and many here felt it was a lie. My friend was killed in Afghanistan, she was a 2nd Lt in the ANG. When she was killed she was in Afghanistan working as an intelligence contractor, not in her capacity as a Guard member.

Here is a story regarding her death.
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/news/local/fairborn-contractor-died-from-gunshot-wound-invest/nWSrY/

The investigation behind the shooting is still ongoing. It appears, at this time, that is was not from a hostile. She received a gunshot wound to the back of her head that severed her spinal column. She was flown to a hospital in Germany where she was declared brain dead. She was kept on the respirator long enough for her father to get to Germany and see her before she died (her other family members had arrived earlier).  At the time her injury was not made known, officially, to the public as the details were not out with the press. But her family was made aware through phone calls, and then some of her friends were called by her brother. That is why it was not listed on the news at the time of my post on DU. And as she was not serving in a Guard capacity when she was killed, it was not on the DoD registry. Still, she was an USAF ANG officer and a contractor trying to make Afghanistan a better place. She worked very hard to make something with her life.

Her brother's fraternity, of which he is the President, is collecting money to help her family with the unexpected travel expenses incurred, as well as help with the funeral arrangements.

http://www.wsudelts.org/

They have already raised about $6,000 for her family. They are working with media and non-profits on this so be assured that all funds will go towards the family. If you would like to donate, I would consider it a personal favor.

Thank you,
Midwest Irish

It wasn't mentioned that she was working as a contractor in the other post, hence the misunderstanding.

I understand. I mistakenly though she was there as part of her Guard duties. But this time it was a deployment as a civilian contractor. I apologize for causing the confusion.

Sad.  But, I heartily commend your loyalty and courage coming forward in this forum to explain what happened.  I would hope you stay around. You may find people here can be supportive, willing to accept responsibility for their mistakes, and, make amends when given the opportunity.

I wholeheartedly agree with all of us CCers who wish to extend their condolences, sympathy, and prayers.

And, you might find that we don't bite . . . well, we're not poisonous, anyway. O-)

Good on you for coming here and clearing the air, why didn't you clarify she was there in a contractor capacity?  Why tell us and not them?

At DU every posted condolences, much like what people are doing on this thread now. No one was questioning that detail so I didnt go back and try to change it or clarify it. I didnt think there was a blatantly false statement that needed clarification until the ambiguity was pointed out here. The post on this website was questioning the statement because there was not an official notice on the DoD (or equivalent) database that listed her as a casualty. I wanted to make sure things were clear because there was an issue here with the honesty of the statement. There were accusations that I was using the sacrifice of service men and women to get credentials among DUers. That notion really disturbed me, as it would anyone. i would never do such a thing purposely. So I made an account and posted here to let people know I was not making up a death to benefit my standing, nor would I exploit the sacrifices of service members in any way.

I did make a later post asking DUers to drink a Bud Light at 8:46 in honor of her. In that post I did state she was there as a contractor (and linked to an article stating such). I just did not in the original post (the one later linked on conservative cave).

Again, I just want to let you guys and gals know that I wasnt exploiting the military and I think it is sick whenever anyone, regardless of party, does that. Sorry if im not making sense here.

Yes, please stay. You can belong to DU and we will still tolerate you.  :-)

We have a couple of other posters who are posters at DU (not moles) and get long well. One I would call a friend and have met in real life.

My Apologies as well. I keep track on Facebook for anything dealing with the military casualties and they turned nothing up for the military as we all know. The news also was silent on this as well as far as I know. Prayers to you and your family and hers.

Friends remembered her as a smiling, happy-go-lucky and helpful person who spent four years in high school in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

How sad.

So sorry to hear about your friend. I donated to the fund.

Ok you came...you corrected your original story.  More than likely you STILL violated rules about notification.

*shrugs*

<---- DU is that way...don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Sorry BEG...a DUmmie is a DUmmie.  It came here to do what it did.

And it's already been here longer than you or I could ever stay at DU.

*shrugs*  We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones.

With that said, you have to understand how some at DU just want to use military deaths as a political toy. Nadin even made up a whole story about a supposed death that never happened. So we are a little gun shy.

You're a member of a site that continually dances on the graves of my fellow brothers and sisters in arms, calling them "idiots", "cannon fodder", and even worse. Did you know that? Or is this one of those cases of, "well, yeah, but, this is different"?
