Message to the island of misfits - this was shot down in an extremely liberal town, in an extremely liberal state. You push gun control? You lobby to change the Constitution? Your party will desert you. You will lose BIG in the midterms.
Mmmmmmmkay?

The people have spoken, the ... conservatives?
The original, less-family-friendly quotation came from California Democrat Dick Tuck after he lost a U.S. Senate primary in 1966. This particular sentiment reflects the divide between the ever-more-left-leaning Democratic Party and the average person — even here in Massachusetts.
Wednesday night the Westford Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to withdraw an article from the Town Meeting warrant calling for the town to ban the possession of virtually all modern firearms. An overflow crowd of more than 400 people showed up to let liberal Selectman Robert Jefferies know that he doesn’t speak for them.
Jefferies responded by not speaking at all. He withdrew the article rather than allow the board to vote it down.

For those not familiar with New England government - most towns follow the town meeting format. The Board of Selectmen have exclusive purview over the warrant (which is a list of articles on the budget and other matters - citizens can obtain signatures on a petitition to include articles on the warrant, but that is not common) for the annual town meeting. There is a deadline to set the warrant, and this meeting was for that purpose.
Moonbat selectman was H5 by his leftist pals when he introduced this article - little did he realize how the residents of this town would respond.
I have said it once, I have said it a million times. GOVERNMENT IS RUN BY THOSE WHO SHOW UP. Board of Selectmen, School boards/committees, City Councilors, etc. make decisions that affect your wallet all the time. You don't show (be that town meetings, at the voting booth, or to speak at the public hearing portion of their meetings to voice your opinion or concerns) then you are letting others make decisions for you and your family.
GET.INVOLVED.
You are political junkies on the internet, but don't extend that to your real life? Come on. The country is waiting.....
-
You're absolutely right, FL, and the same goes for School Board meetings.
At the article, the libbies were butthurt in the sparse comments section. I like this reply:
Good try Pec. You and Joe Biden are on the same page. Declare you have the folks with you, so therefore you do. The crowd in Westford and the lines at gun stores around the country prove otherwise.
-
Update: Selectman Robert Jefferies now believes that most of the people in that meeting were not residents.
He was quoted as saying that he really has no idea how the actual residents of Westford feel about this and would like to move this warrant forward again at some time in the future when he has had a chance to gauge the actual feelings from his constituents. Jefferies has at least one other member of the board of five that would vote along with him.
-
That's the way to get those Westford residents fired up Mr. Selectman!
Accuse them of not being residents! Good times people.
-
Now that is an awesome report. Way to go Westford! FL, I agree with you completely. Things have to be managed at the local level first, and go up from there. Working from the top down is not a viable strategy.

Let me add this from the article:
What this state needs is a “Normal People’s Party.†Until then, we citizens will have to fight these battles ourselves.
FL is right, any of us that are still bitching on the sidelines are wrong, and things like this prove it.

We the people of Ulster County NY made a big difference. Our legislature was considering a resolution supporting a federal gun ban! When 400 of us showed up at their meeting and flooded their chamber they scraped it. The next week the republican leader proposed a resolution to oppose the SAFE act and about 700 came out to the school gym to support it. The final vote was held at UPAC a 1500 seat theater and we filled it! Final vote 14 to 8 to pass it! Power of the people! Stand and fight!
-
I got an email about that, cats. They were looking to fill the venue, and you came through! :cheersmate:
-
Just so you know what an amazing showing that was Ulster County is home to Woodstock and New Paltz 2 of the most liberal towns in the country!
-
That is very impressive indeed!

I thought I heard that the Greene County Legislature passed a resolution to opposed the SAFE Act as well. It might have been Wednesday or yesterday.

I'm waiting for the next "mass" shooting. Once the support drops and the attention span wanders, watch out.
And yet, these people keep voting for the very people whose policies they, often vociferously, oppose? :banghead:

This seems to be a carry-over theme from a discussion in a different forum.
Working locally and within the State I have found to be the most effective. However, this changes nothing about what I and others said on the other thread, which is if the National R's don't put up candidates that reflect conservative economic principles and social values, then the party is in a for a rude awakening in 2016 and every 4 years hence. It would be good for those who are at the local level to move up to hold State and National offices, and I agree that should be the goal.

Unfortunately, in NYS, we're pretty much dominated by NYC.

Same with Chicago running ruining Illinois.
