So people in the service industry
In Florida are sort of happy that them bad tipper Canuck snow birds might stop their travels to Florida.
You know what is so gobsmacking amazing in this story? No, not that most tipping guides recommend 15% in tips and not 20% except for a few circumstances. Nope that s not the gobsmacking part. The incredible part is that people blame the tippers and not the fact that they get paid like shit and depend on those tips to make ends meet.
Now, and I have had these conversations with California service workers, who for the record get far better base pay, and introduce the idea of well, demanding better pay and benefits...are you a commie or something? The mere idea that a state wide, or nation wide strike to demand better pay is seen as somehow un american is what s gobsmacking shocking. It s truly a may I have another Sir moment. .
Oh and if worst case Canadian snow birds do travel to other states or countries, Floridian policy makers will blame everybody, but themselves, and those service workers will miss those poor tippers too.
But speak of better pay and benefits...
I gotta say, while gobsmacking, it is hardly surprising any more.

Is she suggesting waiters go on strike for higher wages?

Oh dear. Nadin learned a new word.
She's hilarious. If she ever gets kicked off the island, I don't know who will take her place.

Nobody will. They'll retire her jersey next to her riffle.

Uh, no, nads. Tipped employees in CA minimum wage is $8.00/hr at least, more if you're in San Freaksicko, etc. But guess what that means? You think any of those folks are working more than, say, 28 hours a week?

Just pay the ****ing tip you stupid ****ing idiot.

I was gonna say, most people who make a big issue about tips are usually the shittiest ones when it comes into practice.
I can count on one hand with fingers left over the number of times I left less than 20 percent. One time I left 15 percent EXACTLY, and only because the service was absolutely God-awful.

San Freaksicko
Why have I never heard that one before?

How does one pronounce "nads"?
Is it naids as in "nads took a sip of my soda and I fear she's given me AIDS." Or is it naadz as in, "nads answered several want ads looking for reporters, but the staff looked at her and laughed her out of the office"

That is the 2nd DUmp post that used the word "gobsmacked". Was that in a talking point memo sent out by Obama recently?

Ditto.

I'm hoping they raise their wage and do away with tipping because I want to have the same service at a restaurant as I do from the DMV and the IRS. Doesn't everyone want their server to treat them like a number who can be ignored and mistreated? And the server can do so knowing there's little or no reprecussions their supervisor can impose upon them? I know I do.
Yeah, nads. You're an idiot among idiots.

I've left a $0.01 tip twice. Both times for service that went into the deliberate action necessary level of bad.
Once was at Denny's. It took as twenty minutes to be seated in an almost empty restaraunt. The waitress seated us at a table that had a standing puddle of water on it. We pointed that out and she said she would take care of it. Ten minutes later, I went behind the counter, found a role of paper towels and dried the table myself. Twenty minutes after we were seated she wandered by and asked us for our drink and meals. Another thirty minutes past before she finally brought us our food and drinks. I originally left a dollar on the table. At the register she asked if I would like to leave a tip at the register. At that point I switched the dollar for a penny and walked out.
She might have had an excuse, but I could observe her almost the entire time. She was reading a book for a good portion of it.
The other time, the waitress was busy chatting with her friends at another table, as my drink glass sat empty for my entire meal.

I do not know how the servers survive on their pay without tips. Not all states pay servers minimun wage, and by gosh some places pool the tips so a bad server gets the same as a great one. Plus some have to share their tips with the Bus boys and girls.
Heck of a job, the weights of the trays, the nasty mean customers and the no tippers. Then there is all tips are income and one is assumed to make 15-20 % wether they make that much or not.
We tip double the food tax for normal service, for good service in the busy hours we triple the tax amount is the service is good.
Good service is being personally seated, given me time to wash my hands in the rest room, time to check out the Menu. Then asking about what I wish to drink, then taking my order.
Great service is not walking up and asking me if the meal is OK when I have a mouth full of food or in conversation with a companion. If I want something I will flag a server down on my own, seating me far away from people with kids yelling or running about gets another buck.
Respect, addressing my Hubby as Sir and me as Miss gets an extra buck. Calling us Honey, Dear or Sugar Pie gets a buck off the tip.
Face it dining out is expensive, I could feed us two for a week on the cost of one dinner. Restaurants are the place in to days world to be pampered, to be able to eat a good meal in peace and not have to cook or clean up after. The cooks make up fabulous meals we cannot make at home, it is the servers that supply the ambiance and comfort to eat it. No one wants to enter a half empty restaurant and be seated next to the rest rooms or kitchen, when the check + tip comes to $60-to $80 bucks for just two, I expect to be treated as a valued customer and not the same as it the meal cost was $35.00 for two.

Having known and dated someone who worked as a waitress I find as does everyone else in the reality based world that El Guapo is full of shit again. Then again it's not a surprise that is going on. So Canadians are supposedly leaving less at the table and this is the response? Seriously stupid if it is. The way to return the favor is to post signs that the restaurant will just go ahead and charge then either on the card or in a price increase. Why does the State or Feds have to step in?

I'm gobsmacked that the nutcase spelled it right.

From the Urban Dictionary, and many other sources agree with this“gobsmack
Completely dumbfounded, shocked. From the Irish word "gob" meaning "mouth".
Only gNads can find something that is BOTH surprising and not surprising at the same time.

I always look for that down south at the small restauraunts. Usually it means the food is gonna be greasy and good.
