The Demise of Boston Talk and the Ongoing Collapse of Corporate Radio
At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jim Braude and Margery Eagan signed off for the last time from the morning talk show they had hosted on Boston's WTKK Radio. A few minutes later, the station reemerged as Power 96.9, a faceless entity blasting out robo-music of some sort. And Boston found itself with just one full-time talk radio station.
The demise of WTKK has been portrayed as another nail in the coffin of right-wing talk radio. The estimable D.R. Tucker calls it part of "a downward spiral for a key element of the conservative entertainment complex." And, yes, that's surely part of it
But what we are really seeing is the demise of commercial radio in general, as corporate owners (Greater Media in WTKK's case) attempt to squeeze the last few nickels of profit out of a medium that may be in its final stage of collapse.

If Talk Radio can't survive in the Republican stronghold of Boston then Rush may as retire now. :rotf:

1. The good news for the long term is right wing radio is going down the shitter
The bad news is it will take the few progressive talkers with it.
And the fact is that everything will be available online anyway in ten years.

11. Conservative talk radio has done way more harm than good in this country.
I'm glad it's going away - good riddance!!

WTKK was anything but Conservative talk radio.

The demise of talk radio would be cause for panic. Rush told me that he'd let me know when it's time to panic. Not yet.

XM Radio type formats is where the future lives. I still tune in from time to time to regular radio, but 99% of the time I'd rather tune in to my XM.

Two words, air America.
That is all your stupid dolts.

One station in a liberal hellhole changed formats and that spells the end of talk radio? :mental:
-
If I had a dollar for every time these sorry-assed prophets had predicted the downfall of talk radio, I'd be half as rich as Rush Limbaugh and still not nearly so interesting to have a conversation with.

“A station has to have an identity,†said Kennedy. “At ’TKK, you had a sort-of liberal show in the morning, basically nonideological stuff in the middle of the day, and then a hard-core conservative in Graham. When you tune in, you should know what you’re getting.â€

The station was a mess. I think WRKO is safe.

Typical Puffington Host blather..
They mention Egan & Braude in one breath, then mention the demise of 'right wing radio' in the next. Egan & Braude are leftists. Braude especially.
-
Stations change formats and close down all the time. This isn't the end of anything. If it was Rock and Country and most other formats would have gone long ago.
-
The stations that are struggling are the ones carrying the B team of talkers i.e. Savage, Reagan and Ingraham.
The ones with Rush, Hannity and Levin plus a morning show that compliments those three are making money still hand over fist.

My wife's new car (purchased last month) came with a six months free trial period. When I bought my car in July of 2011 it was only three months.

Same here, the only problem is they are as bad as Crutchfield. AOL or Columbia house when it comes to junk mail and solicitation phone calls.

Add the NRA to that list.

Add the NRA to that list.
I will look up the e-mail address that I have for the NRA opt out program, you add opt out to the subject line and they will stop sending junk mail. Magazines and offers to upgrade are not considered junk mail.
Let me look for it and get back to you.

A month prior to the end of the world last year, Madison's Very Own WTDY changed formats and fired the very progressive Sly in the Morning. They were going down hill for many years by that point.
Still, as reprehensible as Sly could be and even though I very, very rarely tuned into his show, I don't celebrate it. I don't celebrate the loss of an outlet of information. But it was a business decision. Even in very liberal Madison they simply couldn't attract and keep the numbers.
Unless one is living in a DUmmie paradise, radio listening is a voluntary act. Nobody forces people to listen to Rush and nobody stopped Madison area liberals from listening to Sly. In the end the market made the judgement and the business people responded.
Even if talk radio is over, and it may be, there is tons of free content all over the Internets.
Maybe some young entrepreneur will figure out how to get rights and start rebroadcasting those for the wifi-impaired?

My GOD, these people are stupid.
Hey, DUmmies, did you know if you say "Gullible" slow enough, it sounds like "Oranges"? Try it. Send us a video of you trying it.

They never give up, I hear this every year. :blah:
In Philly, the unions got together and harrassed one station till they put on a couple liberals then the conservatives moved to another station. Currently, a new all conservative station with more power on the FM band even has FOX radio news. Thank goodness I don't have to listen to liberal CBS news. The new station calls CBS Can't Believe the Static or some such.
They have a "funnies" section on their web site;

Not to worry, talk radio make a comeback in Boston (http://bostonherald.com/business/media_marketing/2013/02/eagan_and_braude_land_wgbh_radio). Read some of Eagan's columns in the Herald and you will see that she should have a user name on DU with about 1 gazillion posts.
