(UPI) - A piece of tree bark has received a flurry of attention from the Muslim community after an Illinois man said it is engraved with the word "Mohammed."
Assad Busool, 69, an Islamic scholar from Skokie, Ill., said he was shocked to discover a "holy tree" on his property when he found the engraved 14-inch piece of bark, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.
Insects have been credited with making the Arabic markings which appear to form the Islamic prophet's name.
"It's crystal clear, it says Mohammed. Allah is always putting himself out there," said Andala Mbengue, a taxi driver from Senegal.
Skeptics say it is possible the markings are simply a natural phenomenon and should not be overanalyzed.
Dr. Mohammed Sahloul, of the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, Ill., said most Muslims "don't tend to overestimate the significance of these things."
