Conservatives are mentally healthier than liberals

As a conservative embedded deep in the bowels of the academic beast (How's that for disgusting imagery?) I can assure you that neurosis as well as "liberalism" run utterly rampant there. Most professors are utter basket cases
Boy! did I find that to be true. ....and the further away from the engineering department toward the liberal arts side I got, the nuttier they were.

I always attributed this to conservatives having an "internal locus of control" and libs tending to have an "external locus of control." Conservatives seem to have a strong sense of personal responsibility, while libs seem to see victimhood everywhere.

Years ago I had a friend of mine working on his master's degree come to me for some help. He had to write a thesis similar to what one would do for a Phd. He decided to make the subject "peer counseling in colleges and universities."
His thesis and support were terrific. Bottom line was this. Upper classmen, juniors and seniors made the best peer counselors for the underclassmen. He also pointed out that the more education you got, moving from a master's degree to a Phd, the more "out of touch" they became with the real world.
Now I know many folks who are exceptions to that premise, but most of those who remain behind to teach sure seem to fit his mold. The nut jobs teach the philosophy of Chairman Mao and don't see anything wrong with indocrinating their students; how much nuttier can you get?

My husband and I were kind of talking about this today. I always said my brother (the one who died) was too smart for his own good. He would be what you would call an intellectual. Sat around theorizing but not actually living the experience. Always seemed to think he had all the answers until you threw a wrench into his thinking. Like "give peace a chance", well smart ass, both sides have to want peace for there to be peace. I love my brother, more than words can say, but he was almost so smart he was stupid.

Sad to say I have met more than my share of folks like you described.
Give peace a chance sounds like a great theory. Two fallacies. First of all the goal of war is to destroy the enemy and their will to fight. Peace never works when you have an enemy who is not of the same mind set.
And second, those expousing the great bumper sticker theory seem to forget, their idea has been tried for centuries and it has not worked yet. Think folks in Poland, France, England and the rest of Europe were not trying to do that when Hitler came knocking at their door? Think the Indians were not trying it when the Europeans came to our country?
The best way to keep the peace is no different than when we were kids. When my young son was in high school, literally at an assembly the wrestling coach announced to the student body that he was the toughest kid in the whole school. Not once did he get in a fight, or even come close to it. The only country I know of where they are passive and do not go to war is Switzerland. Of course all citizens must be armed with automatic weapons in their home; but that is mere conincidence....
