Ski masks, a fashion accessory to crime in D.C., may soon be illegal
“They clearly are a problem. Otherwise, we wouldn’t see it being mentioned in all the reports,†said Faith Wheeler, an Advisory Neighborhood Commission member from the Takoma neighborhood in Northwest.
And while police from the Metropolitan Police Department’s 4th District said they think the Rittenhouse Crew — many of whose members are known to police officers — is responsible for some of the robberies, the ski masks are a huge stumbling block if victims are to be unable to identify their assailants.
On a Metropolitan Police Department-run listserv, Ms. Wheeler was one of several people who broached the subject of trying to discourage the sale of ski masks in the neighborhood, or asked legislators whether there are other ways to ban their sale.

Yeah, this sounds like a great idea. ::)

When ski masks are outlawed only the law abiding will have frozen faces.
All this banning stuff has got to stop.

Oh, I don't know about that, you ban a calf's nuts and in a few days they fall off. I don't see why it wouldn't work on Washington's criminals.

Yeah ski masks are the real problem. :whatever:
The Council of the District of Columbia has offered some relief to persons with a criminal record by passing the Criminal Record Sealing Act of 2006. The law allows persons with eligible arrests and convictions to petition the Court to seal some or all of their criminal record.
Let's just keep quiet about who is a criminal and ban everything criminals use even if non-criminals have a legitimate use for things like guns and ski masks.

Wouldn't banning them be considered racist if it's mostly blacks wearing them?
I do wear one sometimes. I walk two blocks to work and it gets down right frigid some mornings.

If the point if to be able to see faces in order to identify people what about the abaya, burka, and niqab worn by some muslim women?

D.C. law already ban individuals — ages 16 and up — from wearing masks in public under certain circumstances, such as while committing a crime

Don't give em any ideas.

Seems quite discriminatory to me.

Yep not like they couldn't mail order them in or anything like that. This is why we need to shorten political careers from the city council up to the Congress either by voting them out or term limits. Politics makes them stupid if they were not that way before.

I spent 13 years as a DC police officer, and rest assured the thugs will cover their faces whether ski masks are sold locally or not. I once caught four murder suspects in a car wearing surgical gloves, handkerchiefs over their faces and carrying pistols in their laps. They were all high on PCP, too. Banning ski masks is idiotic.
Now, if they would start actually handing out prison time when people commit crimes, maybe we would get somewhere. Nothing like running across a 16 year old who already has two armed robbery convictions.
