The Alabama man police say shot and killed a school bus driver Tuesday in an attempt to kidnap a 6-year-old boy has been hunkered down for hours with the child in an underground bunker on his remote property, The Dothan Eagle, a local newspaper, reported.

The paper reported that neighbors in Midland City, which is in south Alabama, identified the suspect as Jimmy Lee Dykes, 67. Police have not officially released the suspect's identity.

Michael Creel, who lives on the road where the shooting occured, said a girl told him that the shooter boarded the bus and told the driver that he needed two kids "between the ages of 6 and 8."

Dykes, for his part, was scheduled to be in court Wednesday for a menacing charge, the report said.

Police with SWAT teams and negotiators were at the rural property. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated and a bomb squad was at the scene, the WSFA.com reported.

Authorities have been in contact with the suspect and the boy is believed to be OK, WSFA said. The situation is considered delicate.

The Dale County coroner Woodrow Hilboldt told The Associated Press the overnight standoff continued early Wednesday with tactical units, negotiators and other officers at the scene near a church. He said the suspect was believed to be in an area described as a place "to get out of the way of a tornado."

The coroner said the victim, who was in his mid-60s, died of multiple gunshot wounds. He wouldn't release a name until family had been notified.

I agree.  That's my old stomping grounds down there in the Enterprise/Dothan area.

No money wasted on a trial.

No money wasted on a trial.
And no money wasted on feeding and housing him the rest of his miserable life. I hope the poor child gets a lot of help. One of my favorite little girls in the world has asperger's. I don't want to even think about what this would have done to her. That guy deserves to burn in hell.

Is it possible a tiny camera was placed in the  toy car the child received with food and medication. ?

Has to be a reason the police "Saw" the abductor holding a gun.  The toy car has been mentioned many times, and know that these new age lens can be placed in a tie clip or woman's earring.

Yup.  Anything is possible.  I have been playing with some video the last couple of days transferring from old 8mm video tape to hard disk.  It is amazing the quality of the old tape.  What is more amazing is the quality of a little camera I bought to use with my RC helicopter.  The 8mm  video camera cost around six hundred bucks in 1990, the little 'dice cam'  for the RC about forty.  The dice cam is a one inch cube and takes almost as good a video with no tape just a 4 gig chip the size of my little finger nail ( maybe even smaller).

How far along is the military in developing miniature flying drone insects?

Think of a beached whale (and anyway,  it is my fence!) :-)

Amazing little camera.  Used it to check on my pac brake when I was not sure it was working correctly.

Law enforcement say they will not get out all details on how the boy was recovered as they used top of the line government stuff they do not want known.

Not hard to figure a camera the size of a mustard seed was placed into the bunker. Not in food, crayons coloring books,  medication , leaves just the toy car and what better place for it?

Brilliant idea here, only toy the child had and with the camera in the headlights the car would most likely be facing forwards.  Thanks heavens for technology, saved this one life.

I think I saw her in the Keys on the nude beach......little skinny old man laying right beside her in the shade.
