How Republicans Plan To Rig The Next Presidential Election, In Six Pictures
How Republicans Plan To Rig The Next Presidential Election, In Six Pictures
By Ian Millhiser posted from ThinkProgress Justice on Jan 24, 2013 at 9:00 am
Yesterday, Virginia Republicans took the first step to move a GOP plan to rig the Electoral College forward in that state. Similar plans are under consideration in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
The Republican election rigging plan targets blue states that President Obama won in 2008 and 2012, and changes the way they allocate electoral votes to give many of these votes away for free to the Republican candidate for president. Under the Republican Plan, most electoral votes will be allocated to the winner of individual Congressional districts, rather than to the winner of the state as a whole. Because the Republican Plan would be implemented in states that are heavily gerrymandered to favor Republicans, the resulting maps would all but guarantee that the Republican would win a majority of each state’s electoral votes, even if the Democratic candidate wins the state as a whole.
Today, the Center for American Progress Action Fund released a white paper detailing how this Republican election-rigging plan works — including this rather striking visual demonstration of just how effectively Republicans gerrymandered six states that are likely targets of their plan:

30. I haven't heard one peep from the DNC on this.
They should be extremely concerned.
Yes, they rely on the DUmp, for political strategy. :mental:

2. Ultimately The Only Way You Will Stop Them Is With Literally "Smash Mouth" Politics
Last edited Thu Jan 24, 2013, 09:54 AM USA/ET - Edit history (2)
The GOP is like the guy who comes up to you and begins to poke you in the chest with their finger. Even after you have exhausted all remedies to get them to stop they continue and taunt even more. The GOP commits violence, intimidation and other means in an indirect way like the Mafia.
They do outrageous things and actually hurt people physically by what they do, but they never suffer any consequences like bullies. And you get to a point that the only way to deal with a bully is to "deck" the bully like the abused character Biff did.
Of course, no one of ever wants to take extreme measures. And the reason the GOP always gets away with their mayhem is that no one ever terrorizes these terrorists.
We are losing our country and our democracy because of GOP tactics. And we can see their intent and determined resolve. They are going to continue to rape the political process until someone stops them an literally terrifies them in some way. Rigging the electoral college is a direct threat to the country and our democracy. It is really treason and should be treated as such.
What is troubling is that they are bragging about their accomplishments behind closed doors.

The irony is that the DUmbasses have been screaming since 2000 to get rid of the Electoral college because as winner take all it can negate the effect of some urban hell holes.
-
If the GOP is so dang fantastic at stealing elections, why is PBO on his second term?

Oh bite me, DUtards..
While you are attacking the right over this concept, I hear no negative press from DU on the liberal counter offer, to base the value of a house member's vote on the size of the population that he or she represents.
-
Congressional districts are based an equal-sized population for each of them in a given state, the politics comes in with twisting the borders around so you can either muster enough support in a district to get your own guy elected or concentrate all the opposing party's votes into as few districts as possible so your guys end up winning 8 out of 10 seats by 55% and the opposition wins 2 out of 10 seats by 95%. Both parties do it, in fact the Supreme Court in its most Liberal days thought it was just peachy so Black votes could be concentrated enough to elect Black candidates by drawing district boundaries that looked like an amoeba on acid.
In a given year it might be to one party's advantage or the other, it is not something that would ensure a Republican hegemony by any means, it could even hurt them in 2016, but it does redress a lot of the inherent inequities in the current all-or-nothing scheme most states use. After what happened in 2000, you'd think these idiots would be all for it.
-
I just have to say that those maps of Ohio and Virginia, in particular, make me sick. Look at all the red.
-

Indeed - but that's not how the proposal works -
It bases vote value on the size of the represented field NATIONALLY, so that the 9 Congressmen from Massachusetts have more power than most of the Midwestern states combined. and together with New York and California, they would dominate the entire nation.
-
Let me get this straight. They feel that the GOP holding a majority anywhere, should not be allowed?
Really?
Not enough :bird: for this.

I'll have to delve into it, but that doesn't make any sense as a state law...the state can only juggle how it counts its own vote, without reference to another, and the population size of a Representative's district is roughly comparable from state to state (Much less so than within the same state) because of Federal reapportionment in the wake of the census every ten years. It's the all-or-nothing system in the Blue states that really kicks the ass of the midwestern states, it would seem that PA, OH, and FL going to this plan would go a long way to alleviate some of that problem.
-
This is all perfectly legal.
There is no crime. More importantly...there's nothing the DUmmies can do about it.

NY would be similar with the City and Albany for the most part with just enough population to carry the rest of the state.
If every state did this then dems would never win the Presidency again and they know it.
As I said up thread, how they hate the electoral college when it comes to the national popular vote at times but now are furious when a local popular vote could undo them.

35. Is There Any Way to Fight This?
Barry could just ban it with an executive order.

It does change the calculus of gerrymandering a lot, if it goes through in all six.

I didn't see much Gerrymandering in those maps. Most of the areas are contiguous and compact compared to what liberals have done in some states to maintain and increase their power.

They pretty much have to be contiguous no matter how stupid the boundaries are, and look at the middle of Wisconsin.

It will never, ever pass - that's a guarantee. But the left loves this notion. Some seem to believe that a system of 'supervoting' could be set up like major shareholders in several companies enjoy. They are convinced that a representative from Nebraska has only a fraction of the representation that a representative from Manhattan may have, and that the power of their vote should reflect that discrepancy - even though one of the functions of the census is to level that playing field.
I'm sure they are also making the same argument involving the Senate, where all states have two of them, regardless of population.
- The thing that disturbs me the most about this notion, is that it effectively strips away another 'States Rights' issue, further consolidating Federal power.
-
I wonder if the stupid ass from "Stink Progress" is even old enough or smart enough to know where the term Gerrymandering came from? I highly doubt it. It was a Democrat polition named Gerryman that first proposed it. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, Asshole.

Contiguous was the wrong word, I should have stuck with compact. Wisconsin is only one of the six, and it still isn't half as bad as some democrap gerrymandered states.

True dat. I believe the most egregious examples came from setting up predominantly Black districts in the SE US, back in the days of the Warren and Douglas courts, which naturally upheld them.

Something needs to be done.
As it now stands, adding up the NE sector, CA, OR and WA, this gives the democrat party 200+ electoral votes right from the get go. Add in MI,IL,WI and MN and it's over.
