Title: Middle School Drug & Alcohol Survey
Post by: Conservative Libertarian on January 22, 2013, 09:28:19 PM
My son came home with an Opt out form that only had a brief description of the Drug and Alcohol Survey that he will have to fill out if I don't send in the opt out form. It stated that it would not identify my son in any way and that it would be used by the state to determine access to Federal funds and making changes to drug and alcohol education across the state.

Below is the email; that I sent the school Principal.

BEGIN email----------
Mr. XXXXXXX,

Thank you for informing me of the subject survey to occur next month.

On the surface, the description of the survey seems acceptable. However, I don’t believe that I can make a reasonable decision without actually seeing a copy of the survey. Therefore, I request a copy of the survey to be received at least one week prior to the survey date so that I can determine whether or not I should fill out and sign the opt out form.  If I do not receive a copy of the survey, I will submit the opt out form by default.
---------END email

I will also add that I live in a very Conservative area. The school tends to operate as Conservative as the state will let it. My state is fairly Conservative as well. My wife and I neither drink alcohol or do drugs. We don't even keep alcohol in the house. I am diabetic and my wife is in chemotherapy which doesn't mix well with alcohol even if she wanted to drink it.

I'm interested in some of your thoughts and/or personal experience with similar surveys in your area. I believe that I sent a reasonable email stating the boundaries wrt my son's participation in the survey.

I received a VERY prompt reply from the pricipal this morning.

BEGIN email----------------
Mr. XXXXX,

I completely understand your desire to view the survey, and it is a reasonable request.  Unfortunately, I do not have a copy on hand.  To my knowledge, they are sent to the school from the administration building.  I would recommend that you contact the curriculum office at 555-XXXX to request a copy.  Please do not hesitate to call or email me, if they are unable to assist you.  I hope you have a great day.

Respectfully,
XXXXX

My response:
Mr. XXXX,

I thank you for your very prompt response and referral for obtaining a copy of the survey.
-------------END email

Was this the polite pass off or the real deal? I guess that I will find out.

I drug his ass out of bed.
I drug his ass to school.
I drug his ass through algebra.
I drug his ass to school functions.
So, yes, he and his mother both now need to do drugs......and a night cap ...or two ....or three. :-)

This morning, the principal obtained a copy of last years survey and emailed it to me. I've got to give this guy credit for quick response and info sharing.

I read through it and the thing that disturbs me is that it asks lot of questions that are not related to drugs and alcohol. A few questions seem like they are fishing for reasons to send CPS to your front door. It doesn't come right out and ask how many guns your parents have in the home or what drugs/alcohol your parents take but, it dances around in an attempts to do so. It's 8 pages long. It looks like a big waste of my son's time to fill it out at school. Right now, my wife will have to find reasons to convince me to NOT send in the OPT OUT form.

You will probably get on another list for opting out.  I wouldn't fill it out anyway.  Sounds like you have a good principal that is just stuck doing crap the gubmint wants him to do.

I agree. Our area is very conservative, uncluding most of the teachers. They really don't like pushing this crap that comes down from the state level.
