After seeing Eupher's thread on his fine Australian, and she is a lovely little lady, I couldn't stand it so decided I would show off Rocket Shooter.
A little background. Our last pup was a Golden Retriever named Dixie Belle that was our darling for about 12 years. Before her we had an Irish Setter that was my creek and boat dog. My son and his girlfriend had found her running the back roads around Beaumont and he brought her home, thin, bedraggled, and skittish as hell. We had her until she was about 14 1/2. After Dixie, and the anguish of having to put her to sleep in December of '06, we were without.
Then along came Rocket. My daughter and her family that live the other side of Houston had his parents, and he was out of the first litter that Annie had. He was the last one left after selling the others, and, as I had always wanted one like Jake, the dad, we took him. The wars started. He was more like his Momma, kinda nuts, and scatter brained. Fortunately he is very loving and mostly a big wuss.
Can't speak to most Labs, but as a Chocolate, the Rocket is half nuts and the other half is crazy. He weighs about 140 pounds, is a big boy, and sleeps with us. Luckily we have a king size bed, or I would have to sleep on the floor. During Rita, we had evacuated to Houston ( our daughter's ) with our Golden in a '94 Chrysler Concorde. If we had gone North with everyone else, we would have been in traffic about 20 hours or more with all our stuff and Dixie. While in Houston, we traded for my wife's Lexus. Great car, but small and another evacuation with Bear would have been a disaster, so I bought a 2010 used Ford F150, sight unseen, picked it up at my daughter's house in Houston, and Rocket loves his BBT. ( big blue truck ) We can't say it as he picks up on the words and wants to go riding.
Rocket at about 2 years;

He is about 3 years older ( turned five this past 5th of the month ) and is considerably bigger and heavier.
For you pup lovers, cats as well, we buy some treats from Cookies for Kaiser, a local business designed to provide a home for strays, cast offs, and some foster pups. That is a story in itself. ( I am not affiliated in any way, except to have made a donation to my Vet for Kaisers original treatment and my wife buys the home made all natural treats for Rocket )
As old folks, we have no business with a big old mutt that thinks he owns us. But we do, and we thank The Lord for it.

Awe Shooter...he's adorable! I tell you what, I've grieved a lot harder for my dogs and cats when they died than I ever did for a human. I know that may not seem right..but it's true.
When I get a pet...they're with me until they die and I just love too hard I guess, because the ones I've lost I still cry over. That's why I just can't look at their pictures...it just tears me up real bad.
I have Gunny...he's five going on six. I'm 57 now and I figure if he lives a full long life, he'll probably be my last...so he's spoiled rotten. Never yelled him or disciplined him for anything...he just doesn't understand meanness or cruelty because he's never experienced it. I told the hubby, I wanted to spoil him rotten and he is, but he's got the most loving, playful personality any dog could have and he gets kissed probably too often, hugged continuously and is loved so much.
If anything ever happened to him...well I guess they'd just have to toss me in the hole with him because I can't imagine life without him now. They sure do fill our hearts don't they... :)

Nice looking dog you have there!!!

Please don't call him that to his face. He goes nuts looking for a dog. He does not realize he is one.
He is a thoroughbred jack ass at times.
Did I mention he is a slimer? Whoo doggy, is he a slimer. He has the heavy drooping side jowls like Jake, his daddy, and he drools, slimes, shakes his head throwing it on everything, or using the furniture or our clothes to wipe and scratch his chin. He is also a shedder. He sheds hair like it is being pulled out. Makes for fun when vacuuming. We took most of the carpet up and installed hard wood flooring after we got him. Of course the old carpet had been laid in '74 when my in-laws built the house.

Shooter, that's a great pup you've got there -- and a very, very big boy at 140 lbs!
We considered getting a chocolate/yellow/black lab five years ago, but we settled on a female golden named Belle (no "Dixie" to her name).

Belle was 9 weeks old when we picked her up and in the photo above, she's about 13 months or so. At that time she wasn't camera shy, but ran and hid when she heard a distant train. I won't even mention the panic that ensues when the fireworks go off on Independence Day....
While she tolerates a train now, she runs and hides when you pull out the camera (the flash frightens her).
Here she is with Lexie, our 3rd pup and alpha female. Lexie's about 4 now while Belle's about 5. Maya is also 5, said the vet.

I definitely know what you mean about carpeting. Since this pic was shot, we had the carpeting taken out and had hardwood flooring put in. With all the scrabbling that goes on, the damned floors will have to be refinished in a few years, but oh well..... :-)

She is beautiful, Eupher. There is something so very special about a Golden. Our Dixie was always a lady except when we took her to the vet after he spayed her at about two years and then she was a holy terror when he got close to her rear end. She remembered big time. When it rained, she would run outside with her head up and her tail straight up, barking and raising hell with the thunder and lightening. I kept telling her she was pressing her luck- the Good Lord might fry her butt with a big lightening strike. Didn't do much good, though. When it came time to put her to sleep, Ninnie ( Momma Shooter ) and I both stayed with her...................
God, I'm tearing up thinking about it. We had her cremated and have her ashes on our mantle....................
Sorry.

When Rockets momma and daddy come to visit, the floor sounds like a flamenco dancer is doing his thing. When our grand son and his fiance's pups come too, it really is a cacophony of sound.

What a pistol he is, Shooterman! :-)

I'll second that. I grieve hard for CCer's animals, too.
S-man, I had a Newf so I understand all about the sliming. Something only a mom & dad could love.

So very true, M'am. It becomes second nature to just kind of let 'em do their thing and not worry about it. There are times when it gets kinda gross; like when he has big long strings of slime hanging from each jowl, but then he'll shake his head violently and it takes off into orbit. Reentry is a booger.
